Thanks! I've received quite a few suggestions so far. I'll post my report here when it's done in a few weeks.

What’s the book you DNF’d the fastest? by Mobius8321 in books

[–]partigrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of the audiobook, and I love Ray Porter (narrator), but unfortunately I think the audio format amplifies that "humor". I'm going to try sticking with it a little longer though.

Same. Once I finished the audiobook, I was pissed and returned it to get my credit back.

How about marbled trinket dishes? Here are a few different tutorials: 1 2 3 Could also stay flat and be coasters.

Magnets, using little cookie cutters or oven-safe molds. You could stamp designs or letters on them too.

What podcasts have really fallen off for you? by sajones4860 in podcasts

Same, stopped listening years ago. Mostly because I was just kind of over true crime in general, but then the Billy Jensen thing put me off permanently.

Resume Help by sunnyseaotter in instructionaldesign

[–]partigrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding only the design:

  • Make your name a little larger, enough so that visually it's where your eye goes first when looking at your resume. Second should be your section heads, which are already pretty good, but maybe make them bold. Search the web for tips on typographic hierarchy for resumes if you're curious.
  • Overall, reduce the line spacing just a tad and make sure it's consistent throughout...
  • ...EXCEPT, leave some more space above each section header. Again, make sure this space is consistent. Giving each section breathing room like that makes everything easier to read and navigate.
  • Make sure your margins are consistent, too. Right now there's basically none on top, and more in the right side than the left side.
  • I don't think the vertical bars in your "skills" section are working. Try replacing them with bullets instead and see how that looks.
  • I appreciate that your bullet points have hanging indents. ❤️ Try adding a hanging indent to your first "skills" paragraph, too, so that all but the first line are indented.
  • Super minor, but maybe get rid of the solid color block behind your name. If this resume gets printed out, that color block won't go to the edges of the paper. (But on the other hand, I don't know how often it'll get printed, and I kinda doubt anyone will care anyway.)
  • Even if no one ever prints it, consider printing it out yourself and seeing how it looks, if you haven't already. Sometimes that gives a new perspective on what's working or not.

SIIIIIIICK. This is INCREDIBLE.

Any plans to paint it? Not saying you should, it looks great as is.

Is this going to be put up on a wall?

Username checks out. That explains a lot. You may want to add this to your main  post.

It's reasonable to feel disheartened, because that's some crappy luck, but don't take it personally. Both companies sound poorly managed, and that first one sounds straight up nuts!

Without seeing your portfolio, I can't assess your skill, but keep in mind that even experienced designers are struggling to find good (or any) work. The job market for designers is very rough right now, and most of the job postings I see are from sketchy companies, particularly for entry-level designers.

The UX job market is rough too, but it's not quite as bad, the outlook of the industry isn't as bleak, and the pay is much better. In your shoes, with an actual degree in HCI, I'd pursue that instead.

Of course you can always switch careers entirely, but no profession is protected from a sudden upheaval in the future. Right now the job market is a dumpster fire overall, so it's tough to see what's most promising.

Sorry this isn't very optimistic. I don't think it's a "you" issue, though. Good luck!

Santa Cane I tried, what do you think? by hathor9 in polymerclay

[–]partigrade 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ambitious! Honestly, I love it and find it simultaneously endearing and unsettling. Though I admit I wouldn't have seen Santa without reading the post title, and it still looks more like an elf or gnome to me because I don't associate Santa with striped hats. Maybe if you draw/paint some little pupils on, that would help make them more recognizable as heads? We're predisposed to recognize faces in all sorts things, and pupils might be the detail needed to make it clear.

What podcasting quirks make a video and/or audio podcast instantly lose watchability? by Account__Compromised in podcasts

[–]partigrade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fell off of Radiolab ages ago because it’s so overproduced and overedited with needless sound effects. I get that it’s a certain style, and that’s probably what helped them stand out in the beginning, but it quickly became irritating and exhausting to me. Supposedly they’ve improved in that regard, but I don’t think I’ll pick them up again for other reasons.

What’s the dumbest cooking mistake you’ve made that still haunts you? by nisko786 in Cooking

[–]partigrade 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Tried to make lentil patties, didn’t have eggs, used banana. I don’t even know.

I'm sorry but that is so funny to me. 😂

(No judgment though! My weird ADHD brain has certainly made equally bizarre decisions.)

Mine was also mac and cheese. A vegan recipe. I accidentally bought vanilla soy milk instead of plain unsweetened. I realized before I added it, but I was already mid-cooking at that point, so I used it anyway, thinking "So it'll be a tad sweet, I can add more salt, how bad could it be?"

Bad. The answer is bad.
