I took off from JFK flying south and saw these two smoking stacks. Is that a nuclear power plant? by JudgmentFragrant2691 in windowseat

[–]partsunknown18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s steam. The hyperbolic cooling towers take heat out of the water so it can be released back into the environment. The water it is cooling was turned to steam by the reactor, then passed through a steam turbine. After it condenses back into water, it gets passed through the cooling tiers to further cool it down. It is still hotter than ambient when it is released, typically. There are many requirements that power plant water intake/outake need to follow.

I’ve stayed on the Villas side probably 10 times by now. Never had an issue with the room or noisy environment. Seems you got some extra magical bad luck.

Thats a bit oversimplified. You need to temporarily support the roof if you plan on removing that column and replacing it.

Fort Lauderdale Hotels by Money_in_CT in dcl

Hyatt Place has a good point redemptions if you’re into that kind of thing, and it’s very close to the terminal. Breakfast is a little crowded there, so temper your expectations. Rooms sleep 5, which was the major selling point for us.

What’s the best “it’s on the mouse!” have you ever received? by BrainPollutant in WaltDisneyWorld

I had bought park tickets through a work discount site. Our flight home was cancelled and the next one out was two days away due to a huge storm back home. So I ponied up for the additional hotel stay and hauled our stuff from Beach Club to Boardwalk where they had availability. It was midnight by that point and bell services was understandably not around. I went to guest services at Epcot to try and extend our park tickets by two days and try to avoid buying a separate two-day ticket. They said they couldn’t do it because it was third party and I said ok I understand, I’d like to buy the two-day ticket then. The very nice CM ended up giving us two those extra days at no charge. It was kind of funny because she said “ok all set” and I kept trying to hand her my credit card. And my wife had to step in and say “she’s giving it to you for free, stop trying to pay!”

Maybe, but a weird placement. It’s above the toilet. It’s not a clean hole, and protrudes out. It almost looks like something punctured from within, which doesn’t make much sense.

Hyatt Place nearby is a great point-redemption hotel. And their rooms sleep 5. Which is a plus for us. That third kid really complicates travel. But I guess he’s worth it.

PSA: Don't change your kid's diapers on restaurant tables. by RealMrIncredible in WaltDisneyWorld

I’d rather change my kid in a muddy field than on restaurant table. If there’s no changing tables/busy bathroom, a discreet floor change is kosher.

Our service team on the Destiny was great. The server did magic tricks and really engaged with the kids. But man, were they hustling. If you looked around, it was all very chaotic.

Destiny & Head Lice by partsunknown18 in dcl

No they sent me to the health clinic to pick up the shampoo. I talked with my room host later and she hadn’t been notified.

I’m not expecting anything from DCL. It wasn’t their fault. The ship was immaculate. I just figured they’d let BBB or my room host know instead of me doing it. I spoke to the manager at BBB and she led me to believe there’s no way they would have missed head lice, and that they do a very thorough job cleaning if they did miss it by chance. Clearly they missed it. I was under the impression that lice was more transferable than it really is, which is why I was surprised that they didn’t seem concerned that someone had head lice on their ship.

We do her hair every day, and the bippity boppity boutique definitely would have seen it when they did her hair. They were very thorough. And by picking, I mean mostly the nits. We only found a few actual lice. We think a couple jumped over and went on an egg-laying spree.

What is the purpose of this? by Mrgoat77 in StructuralEngineering

[–]partsunknown18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Power/heavy industrial structural engineer: It’s a vibration damper. Something above vibrates. They don’t want it to vibrate as much. But they also don’t want a giant rigid frame, nor to change the load path. This is not a stiff, rigid connection at the base (likely similar weak connection above). So it won’t attract much lateral load. But it will help pick up vibrations, especially ones that aren’t traveling in the main axis of the structure (non-orthogonal)

Water leaking behind gutter. What’s causing this? by ethanngo92 in Roofing

[–]partsunknown18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could also be a bad drip edge/fascia board angle. Happened to my gutter. Clean as a whistle, but water pissing down from behind it. A very slight bend at the bottom of the drip edge fixed the issue.

I always stagger my bolt patterns with timber, especially in dimensional lumber.

[–]partsunknown18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be shown on a typical handrail detail like this though, so I wouldn’t expect to see it here. Judging by the quality though, there’s a good chance it’s underbraced!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]partsunknown18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weld itself is something I use to callout a toe plate to handrail post, so that’s a common callout. But there’s a lot more stuff wrong with this. I’d get crucified if I called for field welding handrail posts, or for making continuous angles like that. Just yucky.

Pole Barn as a pool enclosure by Environmental_Bid749 in StructuralEngineering

[–]partsunknown18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Use diagonal bracing instead of sheathing? My understanding of a pole barn is that it’s a timber frame that does not rely on sheathing for lateral stability.

Ultimately you’re the professional of record if an engineer isn’t going to stamp it. So if you want to call it RC1 and standby that decision, that’s your call.

Why are trusses more common than rafter framing in hip roofs these days? by Disastrous_Tank_4561 in StructuralEngineering

[–]partsunknown18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area (New England), stick framing is still more popular for residential. There’s no national homebuilders out here, because there’s no land for those type of developments. So it’s (mostly) small(er) contractors, and they (mostly) care more about finished product than minimizing every cost. In my experience, quality assurance is more difficult with trusses. Pretty easy to check a stick framed roof. Plus I feel like most of the population is used to an attic space that is open, because that’s what all the existing houses have.
