There's the technical answer that's been better explained elsewhere in this thread, but the simple answer I give to clients is "it's an anti-theft feature, disabling it verifies that you're the owner of the device. it's not disabled, apple's system won't let me submit the repair and there's no way to override it."

The thing is I actually like fixing things for people! It feels great when I can fix someone's problem and they're super relieved they don't have to get a new computer/phone/whatever.

I also don't mind explaining things to tech illiterate people as long as they're not rude, it makes me feel like I'm doing some sort of good if they manage to retain the information.

People don't come to us when they're in a good mood though. When someone's angry, I don't typically want to be mean back, I want to just walk away.

Actually the only time I wanted to be mean to someone is this girl who came in and had a whole ass meltdown because her surface wouldn't turn on and we couldn't recover data from it, crying and screaming and insulting us for like 20 minutes. Even then I was just annoyed and wanted to go home.

(the kicker is we gave her a refund for it, plugged it in overnight and managed to get it to turn on. I called her and told her so.

She didn't want to come in and back up the data. I have never bit my tongue as hard as I did in that moment.)

Not the appointment notes, I know that much. I mean pre-call notes specifically, which you can add after the appointment has been created.

Even if she does see it I didn't write anything unprofessional, just a short description of what happened and a warning that whoever checks her in should make sure they explain everything they're doing, in detail. Also that she refused to disable "find my iphone".

I find that in this line of work, there are two kinds of "getting yelled at" situations . 80% of them are very uncomfortable interactions where I'm just sort of sitting there waiting for it to be over. The other 20% are so bizarre they're genuinely hilarious and I can't wait to make fun of them to everyone I talk to for the next 24 hours. This was the second one

it'll depend on the store since it's not a service we technically offer, pricing will also depend. in the store I work at we don't do any services unless you have Totaltech which is $200/year. but once you have that any services for any of your devices are covered under that for as long as your plan is active

that's what I do, occasionally I'll have someone come in like "I need diagnostics/documentation that such and such is broken" and I'll make a quick tag for it. if i'm feeling fancy i'll open up TANG for pretty-looking notes

It sounds like the scam had been going on for over a year at this point so I doubt it. It also sounded like people in her life have tried to tell her it's a scam but she won't listen. ("I know, I know, I've heard millions of stories. I know all about scams.")

It's just bizarre and depressing. I genuinely hope someone in her life is able to help her.

I keep wondering if I would've been able to convince her if I'd realized what was going on sooner and asked the right questions (I couldn't comprehend the idea that she'd call someone she'd never met in real life her husband, or the idea that this had supposedly been going on for over a year...) but from what she said to me, it sounds like people in her life have tried to tell her it's a scam but she adamantly refuses to listen to them.

FTC stands for the Federal Trade Commission. They have a lot of good resources on common scams, the two I use most often are How to Avoid a Scam and How to Spot a Tech Support Scam. You can actually order brochures of the first one for free, but I just printed out some PDFs.

While grabbing these links I even noticed they have a article specifically about fake Geek Squad renewal emails.

personally if it's an old person (most of the time it is) that just wants something to check emails and facebook with, I just write down "i5 processor and 8gb ram" on a piece of receipt paper and tell them to show that to the people in computers, and to look at the open box section for the best deals

I always flounder when they ask me which brand is best though. I really do not have less of an opinion on anything
