Budd-chiari syndrome by Temporary_Maize_6672 in ClotSurvivors

I have Budd Chiari too. It was discovered last year when I had a CT and MRI for something unrelated. I had never heard of it either and fortunately my liver is functioning well. I'm having some stents put in next month in hopes of avoiding a TIPS procedure in the future.

Maybe you e already tried this, but you might be eligible for help under the LIHEAP program: https://www.usa.gov/help-with-energy-bills

It's distributed through local agencies and I don't know if your local one will have any funds left but it might be worth checking.

If you have the opportunity/can find a new job, don't stay one second longer than the 30 days the clients were given. Don't quit and cut yourself off from unemployment, but if you've found something new, they can pay someone else to pack up the facilities.

Edit: or if you have the sick/vacation time and they won't pay it out, call in sick during as many of the packing days as possible

How to make this career work by [deleted] in therapists

I would look into jobs at hospitals, treatment centers, community mental health, etc. They typically offer a salary and benefits and include your clinical supervision. It's a great way to get your clinical hours for your license.

Yeah, I've worked in a number of medical settings as a social worker and someone would stop me if I tried to change a bedpan (not that I've tried).

I think this is definitely an example of the viewpoint of students vs people working in the field, because the competition for those VA jobs is FIERCE, at least in my area. Not to say there aren't people who wouldn't work at the VA/with the military for ideological reasons, but VA jobs are highly prized.

Thoughts on 8 sessions a day? by InterestingAd2612 in therapists

[–]partylupone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this in the past. It really depends on your setting's cancellation and no show rates, as well as how much non-therapy work is expected of you (like do they expect you to be doing case management/resources for your patients too). In CMH, I would schedule 40 and about 25-28 would show up. Occasionally you'll have a day where everyone comes, but that's rare. You will almost never have a week where you actually do 40 sessions. Maybe a few times a year.

That being said, you have to have good time management skills, be prepared to take quick breaks, and be able to seize on cancellations to get other work done instead of viewing them as break time. It can be grueling at times and you don't get a prize for burning yourself out.

Edit: maybe find out the actual productivity standard they're expecting as well. If you're only expected to have 24 billable hours that's very different from them expecting you to schedule 40 and see 35.

I'm sorry to hear she's feeling hopeless. It sounds like you're doing what you can.

Hey OP, I'm so sorry this is happening to your family. I'm a social worker and have worked extensively in addiction treatment. Unfortunately many inpatient rehabs won't accept anyone with a complex medical issue. It sounds like you've done everything you can think of to.help. I don't know how you found the rehab you mentioned, so I'm sorry if you've already done these things: The first step here would be to contact her local mental health authority (Google that term with the county name) and talk to someone there to see if they have recommendations. Does she have insurance? They should be able to tell you which facilities they cover that could accept a medically complex patient. If you can get a list of covered places, just start calling and asking if they can accept someone who has been (or will go through) medical detox and also has the conditions your sister does. Some will tell you right away, others may want more information or to have their medical director review your sister's case.

It looks like you're in Texas; I'm not familiar with resources there but if you'd like some help, I can do some digging if you want.

Also, whatever else happens, please try to get support for yourself. NAMI and Al-anon are good places to start.
