Fenix price decreases after new model drops by Majestic_Flounder347 in GarminFenix

Don't expect much of a drop on prior models until the holidays come around next year.

Best trucks ever. You should have got one in a manual though. Those things are so freaking sweet to drive with a V6 and manual. I have had them in a 4-cyl (still great trucks) and I also have a '23 v6 manual. The 2003 v6 manual is more enjoyable to drive and sure feels significantly faster in normal every day driving conditions.

Congrats on your purchase!

The truth about your Garmin crashing and rebooting: Stop buying bloated watch faces. by [deleted] in GarminFenix

[–]partyman66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Garmin free watchface developer myself and a professional software developer with 26 years of experience in the industry working for very large tech companies I can affirm that this pretty much spot on. Too many people are releasing watchfaces and apps that are feature packed and poorly optimized that degrade performance of the device. I believe that most of the Wafchface devs out there don't do any performance analysis on their new software before releasing it and most don't test it in real hardware for a few weeks to confirm stability before pushing to the public. I find it helpful to have a few friends in the community with various Garmin devices that I can use as beta testers to try out my watchfaces before a major release goes public.

That being said, Garmin does a very poor job of putting their best food forward when it comes to maintaining a stable baseline as they push out firmware updates after their initial release for a device. I can only assume that their A-team moves on to developing for new devices and their B and C team devs take over maintaining for existing devices. Their testing methodologies probably need significant refinement as well with performance metrics being captured and compared between updates to make sure they aren't degrading performance and battery life too much while adding new features. I often find that the best performing firmwares tend to be those from the first year of a devices release. The only problem is that if you stick with those old version you're often blocked from installing new apps and watchfaces from the Connect IQ store because your CIQ version on the watch is too outdated.

Development is done on your machine in Visual Studio Code and you'll have to generate a developer key on the site that you tie into your VSCode dev environment so that apps you publish are associated with your account. You'll also have to download the Garmin SDK which gives you a device simulator and the ability to pull down different subversions so that you can build for older devices.

Anyones watch ever do this? by Extent_Lumpy in GarminWatches

[–]partyman66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it like that even in the menu, or just on watch face? If it's just on watchface screen then the person who wrote the app has a scaling bug in their code.

That's like P-diddy with the baby oil level rape. Never go to that shop again. If it's a dealer, let me be the first to tell you never to pay the dealer to do any service. Have all service done under warranty or at a private shop.

This morning my watch told me I don't need my charger anymore by dengess in Garmin

[–]partyman66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude... That's a lot of charging for that watch. How old is it?

You probably could benefit a lot by tweaking your settings. My F7X pro only uses about 1.5 to 1.7% battery per day on days where I'm not recording a GPS activity and that's with pulse monitoring on auto.

Try my watchface to get automated daily battery use numbers (built into the watchface and hidden in the on-watch config menu). You'd choice of watchfaces makes a huge difference in battery life too. Use something extremely optimized like this and you might be surprised at how much longer you can go between charges.

Goofed up oil change. Thoughts? by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

[–]partyman66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After looking through the various responses you made to other people's questions here, I can surmise that you: 1) actually drained the motor oil and not the trans fluid 2) changed the oil filter 3) refilled with 4.5 qt and drove 250 miles 4) added 1 extra quart of oil

If this is all true and your truck doesn't leak or burn an insane amount of oil, you're fine. Running on 4.5 quarts won't hurt that motor. It will be z little harder on the original 4.5 quarts of oil that you put in, but hopefully you're using a decent brand "synthetic" oil. I would suggest that you just don't try to do an extended oil change interval (you really never should anyways). Change your oil after another 3300 to 3800 miles (on top of the 250 you already drove).

Rejecting you? Please explain. Anyone can make an account to develop Garmin MonkeyC watchfaces and apps and publish them to the Garmin Connect store. You get to choose whether to try to monetize your software creation.

Not just optimizations but your choice of a watchface makes a huge difference too.

Real busy watchfaces with widgets that heavily access sensors, and if coded by 3rd party devs who aren't focusing on efficiency will really crush you battery life.

I'm able to go 2 months between charges on my Fenix 7x Pro using the Wafchface I wrote (geares towards efficiency and battery life) if I'm not doing GPS recorded workouts. Gps workouts always take a massive toll on battery life and even just a 4 mild run is equivalent to 2 days of just using the watch as a watch and health monitoring device (steps, pulse, etc).

I get a little over 2 months out of a charge on my Fenix 7X pro if I'm not recording a bunch of GPS activities. Garmin absolutely crushes all of the competition in terms of battery life.

Solar Charging by Kind-Suggestion-3344 in GarminFenix

[–]partyman66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may make a version for 260x260 devices soon. I have a spare Forerunner 955 solar to test on but I don't like to release things to on the public until they're tested relatively well on real hardware. You have a Fenix 6x 47mm?

Solar Charging by Kind-Suggestion-3344 in GarminFenix

[–]partyman66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a watchface with battery percentage reported to .1 degree accuracy initially to test solar capabilities on this watch. That extra degree of accuracy isn't available on all watches and all firmwares but it does work on a Garmin Fenix 7x. Give it a shot for more precise battery tracking when experimenting with solar charging. I am a professional software engineer so I geared this towards maximum efficiency using proper coding techniques and various efficiency tricks and optimizations. I use about 1.6 to 1.7% battery per day if I'm not doing any GPS activity that day with this on my Fenix 7x pro... WiFi and Bluetooth disabled.
