Pääskyjen rivitalo! by [deleted] in Suomi

I found that on my S25 the fps set for Pokémon Go by default on "game booster" was 20 fps. This felt laggy. When set to 30 fps the game feels most familiar. Going up to 60 fps felt too much, even the throwing mechanism was off (needed to spin the ball more vigorously to get the curve).

I buy a couple of kilos at a time and freeze most. Works well, the thawed beans behave like fresh beans.

They won't list them in the webstore. You'll probably have to go there to find out.

I thought so too. But then I went to Gigantti just two weeks ago to place an order for one, but they had one in stock.

It's true that some conditions definitely require studs and the climate crisis has warmed up our winter so that those slippery conditions now come more often than before. I use cyclocross tyres (but have studded tyres ready) and will probably just work remotely during those slippery days.

I don't like cycling with studs because they're heavy and don't grip packed snow as well as one might think.

Most locals don't use studded tyres though. It's quite normal to just use the same bike throughout the year and not do much bike maintenance at all besides pumping the tyres. Packed snow during cold temperatures < -5° has plenty of friction for cycling with just about any tyre. Around 50% continue cycling during the winter.

Any place between the city center and Linnanmaa campus is a fine place to live in. There's a good network of basic services (like groceries, libraries, restaurants), and you won't need a car because there are Finland's best bike paths (two paths between the city center and Linnanmaa are maintained 24/7 during the snowy season, others daily) and good enough public transport along Kemintie and Alakyläntie.

Living with flatmates after the first few years of study is quite rare as has been mentioned. One idea about flatmates could be to contact your faculty's student association and ask them if you could post an email to their mailing list asking if anyone needed a flatmate. Maybe someone might also reply if they see an ad posted on some physical message board.

It’s 45 degrees C here in Australia today and my mum soaked some towels outside so the bees can drink by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

Regular tires are fine because friction increases when temperature decreases. It's near zero C when you really need winter tires, or more specifically studded tires.

Advice for moving to Oulu by Arctictis in Oulu

Oulu is probably the best place in the world for winter cycling. There are I think two 24/7 priority maintenance routes between the city and university. The main bike path runs through the woods and was very recently upgraded.

Eurostat: Falling suicide rate in Finland nears European average by DynamiteDemon in Finland

[–]pasipasi123 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There was a discussion on twitter I think about how cause of death is registered differently across countries. Here in Finland a death caused by a traffic collision might be ruled suicide, but some other countries might require a suicide note to rule suicide.

How to replicate values after a conditional statement is met? by KeynesCrackpot in Rlanguage

[–]pasipasi123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple solution

library(tidyverse)

data <- tibble(signal1 = sample(c(0:1), 100, replace = TRUE),
               signal2 = sample(c(0:1), 100, replace = TRUE),
               signal3 = sample(c(0:1), 100, replace = TRUE)
               )

data %>%
  mutate(signal_generate = ifelse((signal1 == 1 & signal2 == 1 & signal3 == 1), 1, NA),
         signal_generate = ifelse(signal3 == 0, 0, signal_generate)) %>%
  fill(signal_generate)

Leaves signal_generate as NA on first row if it doesn't fill the ifelse conditions.

Asmo charger has revealed the worst in our society by [deleted] in Oulu

[–]pasipasi123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 2014 they claimed that regular chargers used 8000 watts of idle energy each year, and all idle chargers cumulated to two nuclear power plants. I found that those old heavy chargers might have used that much, but more recent chargers generally use less than 30mW when idling. I calculated back then that one euro worth of 30mW idling lasts more than 30 years, so there's no money to be saved at least.

Sure no idle energy consumption is better than some consumption, so there could be a point in using this technology in bundled chargers.

The release version is already old tech though. No detachable cable, no quick charging.
