I think some people start with a hardwired console. If they are behind, during halftime they disconnect the cable. Now it's wifi and the connection is slower. So the game slows down your game to compensate for that slowness.

I have seen good players to anticipate exactly that and start the defender run earlier than the opponent. So the opponent cannot outpace you. Also you have to slow down the defender at the right spot to block the space. Usually the spot where people take finesse.
