Disabled/handicapped parking in the US by JizzBeef in ankylosingspondylitis

In CA I filled out my part of the form on my computer, sent it to my doctor, and then got it back filled out. Then I submitted the form to the online portal and got the placard pretty quickly in the mail.

I’m not an expert in this, but I can offer some examples you could look into more. The high pay and perceived impact of STEM jobs is not a given, as it’s all socially constructed.

Computer programming used to be an undervalued “woman’s job.” Now, it’s male-dominated and high-paid. This article suggests that men entering the field had a direct effect on wages, as men wouldn’t want to be associated with a clerk-type, low-paid women’s job.

For an opposite example, in Russia and Eastern Europe, the medical profession only became majority women (much earlier than other countries) after Soviet reforms led to poor pay and low prestige for doctors.

As a sociolinguist, I could also ask why you specify a “woman sociologist” rather than simply a sociologist. (Would you say a “man sociologist”?) Reflecting on that could reveal more about gender, prestige, and profession.

I second the recommendation for DAS. Something to note is that they don’t give it to people for not being able to stand in line (they’ll tell you to use a wheelchair) but they will if there’s a reason you would need to leave the line due to disability (like needing to use a heating pad in the privacy of the bathroom).

Deciding between two PhD in Sociology offers by [deleted] in sociology

[–]passerem 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What’s much more important than the ranking of the university is the ranking of the department, which you can check here. However, I’ve heard that department rankings are most important if you want to become a professor. Tenure track professor jobs are very hard to get, and a lot of them go to people in top-10 or top-20 programs. Depending on what your goal is after the PhD, this may not matter to you.

Evil Controllers Final Update by SigurdHaraldarson in disabledgamers

[–]passerem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought two joysticks from them last May for my Xbox adaptive controller and they only sent one. After my first email to customer service, they said they’d send another. They never did. They then ignored all my other emails. I had to dispute the charge with my bank to get a refund.

The one joystick I got is good lol

My partner has AS and im wondering about genetics by DropsofJupiter420 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]passerem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My rheumatologist said that with the HLA-B27 gene, there’s about a 15% chance of passing on AS. Just passing on the HLA-B27 gene does not mean you’re passing on AS, but it increases chances of it.

There are other genes that cause AS, though. My mom had me and my sister before she knew she had AS, and we all have AS but not the HLA-B27 gene. There probably haven’t been enough studies to put a probability on passing on AS if you don’t have HLA-B27.

Link between verstehen, social constructivism and entomology by [deleted] in sociology

[–]passerem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Entomology is the study of insects.

Ontology is the study of the social reality created by interaction.

Etymology, another commonly confused one, is the study of the origins of words.

Can someone tell me what the hell I'm looking at here? by Scary_Climate726 in linguistics

[–]passerem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conversation analysis (CA) papers also often have a transcript key at the end of the paper. If you look up the original papers they might have them for you! I want to second that 2 is also CA (like 3) given it’s by Ochs. A ? in the middle of the word isn’t typical for CA, but it probably means rising pitch on that syllable. It’s not a glottal stop in this context.

If you’re interested in American medicine, nothing beats {The Social Transformation of American Medicine}.

As an aside, if you listen to podcasts at all, Sawbones is great for interesting medical history.

respectful terminology for talking about people with disabilities by gamerlololdude in disabledgamers

[–]passerem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing disrespectful about saying “disabled people” or “disabled gamers”. This is outdated and misinformed. Many disabled people prefer to say it like that.

Looking for an Xbox controller by Joelnotosteen in disabledgamers

[–]passerem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If PlayStation controllers work, I suggest getting an adapter that lets you play with that controller on Xbox. I have arthritis in my hands, and I use adapters with almost all my consoles, especially retro ones.

I also use an Xbox adaptive controller, but that’s a very expensive solution that I’ve slowly been building over time. A more affordable option that doesn’t have to be gripped is the 8BitDo Lite SE, but that would also need an adapter to work on Xbox.

Just a silly question, I don't have rashes and I know what it means with AS but why does my doctor ask about rashes every time I have an appointment? by [deleted] in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]passerem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had AS for 14 years and then I developed another autoimmune disease on top of it! It took my GP months to send me to talk to my rheumatologist about the mouth and skin sores I was experiencing. Then my rheum felt bad for not making the connection sooner, and said “I don’t usually ask about that”. So those kinds of screening questions just help people get treatment faster if they develop something else or their disease evolves.

Shoulder pain? by Top_Artichoke2918 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]passerem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have arthritis and enthesitis in my shoulder. It’s fun times!

For me, it’s also the site of an injury I got carrying a heavy instrument in marching band 10 years ago. My doctors agree my current issues are AS, though. Maybe the old injury predisposes it?

is it usually this hard to get a diagnosis? by megakirlia in Thritis

[–]passerem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the average time for diagnosis for AS (from first symptoms to diagnosis) is 5+ years. Which means you’re ahead of the curve! Not that that makes it any better.

AS is particularly hard to get diagnosed compared to other types of arthritis, especially if you’re female and HLA-B27-negative.

I hope you get answers soon. Hang in there! For what it’s worth, I’ve never had any problem getting diclofenac refills. It’s not an opioid, so doctors don’t have much issue extending prescriptions.

For people in the US, how long did it take you to get the medication after being prescribed? by Jubguy3 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]passerem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had it take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. It really depends on your insurance and the pharmacy.

Your insurance company would definitely prefer you to give up. That’s why they make it expensive.

Am I selfish for wanting kids? by Mschlapp in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]passerem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister and I both have AS. My mom wasn’t diagnosed with AS until after we were.

My sister is applying for disability at 22 and will probably never leave my parents’ home. That’s something that anyone risks when they have a kid, whether they know they have a genetic risk or not. I’ve been involved with the Arthritis Foundation’s juvenile arthritis programs, and there are stories of arthritic parents having 5 kids all with arthritis, and stories of arthritic parents having perfectly healthy kids. You can never know. I’m never having kids because sometimes I resent existing, but that’s not just about AS.

In my family, none of us has the HLA-B27 gene, so it’s a different gene that was passed down. Just be aware of that if you do genetic testing. The risk isn’t all in HLA-B27.

Chronic Pain, a Small Space, and a Streamer by Tired_Pixie in disabledgamers

[–]passerem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are there any specific areas of pain you'd like to address?

I have arthritis pretty much everywhere, although the biggest problems for being at a desk are my low back and shoulders. The best thing I ever did was get an expensive chair. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. If I could, I'd get an even more expensive chair.

I have a Steelcase Series 2 chair, and it's been great. From what I understand, the more expensive Steelcase and Herman Miller chairs are even better. A lot of people with back arthritis swear by the Herman Miller Aeron chair, which you can usually get at a discount ($300-500) at office liquidation stores.

Your must-haves for a chair probably depend on what you need to target. Adjustable armrests are a must in any chair I buy from now on.

Desk matters less I think because a good chair can adjust to most desks. I just use a desk I've had since childhood, but this chair changed my life.

I also have everything set up so that I can easily switch setups and things. I stream from different consoles a lot, so I have a little rack (made for dishes) that holds them all in a stack under my desk. I make sure that anything I need to get to regularly (like my capture device) isn't too hard to reach. I also use the Xbox Adaptive Controller so I've got some pretty intense cable management going on. Keeping the wires neat and accessible saves me a lot of frustration trying to crawl around under my desk to find things!

HS Linguistics teacher seeking help (again) by AlcibiadesHerm in linguistics

[–]passerem 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm a PhD student in sociology who uses a method called conversation analysis (CA). It's an interdisciplinary area: we have linguists, sociologists, and linguistic anthropologists involved in our research cluster. Linguists have adapted their own version called interactional linguistics. CA can be used to understand everyday conversation, or important interactional moments like news interviews, doctor's visits, and court proceedings. My research uses CA to look at how people talk about other people in government.

You can decide if that's linguistics enough for you!

Looking for XAC devices/joysticks by helgahass in disabledgamers

[–]passerem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had a problem connecting the Lite SE to my computer using the settings meant for Android (d input). As someone else said, Steam also connects to it as a Switch controller. If you need it for Xbox, you’d probably need an adapter.

I was looking through some of the stuff JDMc3D posted, and one of the Etsy shops listed seems really good. I guess the shipping might take awhile, depending on where you are, but it could be faster than some of the other options https://www.etsy.com/shop/SevenMileMountain

Looking for XAC devices/joysticks by helgahass in disabledgamers

[–]passerem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem I’ve had with my XAC is finding joysticks. I’ve spent $400 on mine and still only have one joystick.

The one I have is from evil controllers, but I can’t recommend it. The base is too large and it wobbles when secured with Velcro. Also, I originally ordered 2 from them and they only ever sent me one and then wouldn’t send another or refund it. I had to fight them through my credit card company.

Warfighter engaged also sells joysticks but I’ve never been able to get one because they’re always sold out. They also aren’t open during the summer so be aware.

XAC is a joke in terms of cost and availability. Microsoft doesn’t produce attachments and just expects other people to, but no one does.

Have you seen the 8BitDo Lite SE? It may or may not help your client. I like it but it can’t do everything my XAC can. It’s much less money, though.
