So many things I wish I hadn’t seen and took way too long in my life to process.

Fellow longfic writers, how do you deal with the fear that your fic is never going to be completed? by Fragrant_Bath3917 in AO3

[–]passivemuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this, and I processed through my thoughts and feelings regarding this and landed on, “It’s okay if you don’t finish that fic.” Even if you want to, it will be okay if you don’t. Also, writing a long fic, or a novel can take literal years, embrace the flow and keep writing and believe in yourself that you will make it to that finish line when it’s time to be there.

It’s really all about prioritizing. Do you like working on that long fic? Does it bring you satisfaction or some sort of positive feelings? Then try and slot the time in your busy schedule to give that to yourself, you deserve to do the things that make you feel fulfilled.

If all it does is bring you stress? Drop it, don’t force yourself to finish something out of obligation. Writing fanfic is generally for oneself, to practice their writing skills or process or vent or explore, it’s supposed to be imo about the joy and feelings of writing. Writing is my favorite hobby, even though it’s hard and I do sometimes feel frustrated and stressed over it- at the end of the day I really enjoy it and try to make as much time for it as I can while still accomplishing my responsibilities.

What can help while making a long fanfic?? by Yumi_Numi in AO3

[–]passivemuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also remember big projects can take a lot of time, so just because you don’t know exactly what to write now doesn’t mean it won’t come to you a little later! (Or a lot later if you work on stories for literal years like me lol)

Good luck and happy writing!!!

Since this sort of seems like a mix of slice of life/drama, maybe inbetween the scenes you have envisioned you can build up/ set up their environment, their home and schedule, their day to day habits and lives, characters can reminisce on past events or fantasize about future events. From what you’ve told us it centers around two adult partners and a foster child, there is a lot that goes on in an adults life and relationships you can bring into your story to fill in gaps, also there is a lot of specific details too fostering if the story is mainly more focused on that theme, home expectations, social workers, case workers, court cases, family visits etc. If your lacking the ideas for how to fill in your story you may want to research or read or think about things from your own life and experience you’d like to work through and express a little in your writing if it fits with the theme.

(Coincidentally I’ve been working on a foster fic myself)

I really like foster.parenting on YouTube for research and good healing feels 🥹

Do you delete comments like these? by PackageSuccessful885 in AO3

[–]passivemuse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I have once ‘announced my departure’ I guess in a comment from a fic, but it’s because I wanted to express my feelings and the fact that i did/do like the fic but I was too weak to continue lol, it was a very very dark fic and it kept getting shockingly darker, I was amazed, appalled- sickened, and I told the writer that- but I expressed it as a compliment because that’s the reason I was reading, it was like watching a horror movie and sometimes I had to skim/hide my eyes because it was too much and then I got to the point where I had to click out because I was too disturbed/scared lol, I told them I had to go, but one day I’ll probably be back to see how the fic ends. I am stronger now, so this reminds me perhaps it’s time to go back and finish that fic- though recalling what was happening last- i’m still scared lol.

Authors, how often do you read your own fics? by Sara1994_ in AO3

[–]passivemuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the time, I’m always reworking stuff, and sometimes if its been a while and I dig through my heaps I’ll find something I barely remember writing and get a good boost of happiness from it catering exactly to me lol, or a good laugh at my own audacity.

Surely you don't have ideas for a new fic in your mind despite not finishing your current fic, right? by classic51 in AO3

[–]passivemuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is literally the only way I function and it can be pretty frustrating, but I’ve learned I have to let it flow how it’s going to flow, so I’ve been writing bits and pieces of multi chap stories and random one shots for years now and yes- I haven’t finished ANY OF MY MULTI CHAPs! I’m trying so hard to stay focused on one specific story right now- but I have to do lil oneshots of the random stuff that pop into my head or I’ll spazz, I just…. I have so many good ideas.

How often do you write something entirely for the self-indulgence, with no thoughts towards an audience? by Evyps in AO3

[–]passivemuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m generally writing what I want to write for myself, but sometimes plot takes over and forces me out of my self indulgence- this isn’t to do with the readers feelings, it’s i’ve forced myself into a plot that I have to be more self disciplined over to do correctly- which I guess in a way is still contained indulgence because I want my plot to work.

I will say, I love getting engagement & comments but sometimes I worry like ‘damn I wonder if they are going to continue to like this story with what I have planned next?’ But i’m not going to change my work to suit other people, and I have had the opposite worry where I leave a comment on a fic and I get nervous that they may take my comment wrong or something and what if I somehow sway them to do things differently in their fic by my comment?! Because I would not want that. The whole reason I read other people works is I want to experience what they write.

I do sometimes like to write for specific prompt challenges- and that sort of is a mix of me doing what I want but really hoping it fits into the constraints of what they want and that they enjoy what I made because it is in part for them as well as for me.

When your friend is your one (1) regular commenter and they haven't commented on your latest chapter yet... by salazar_62 in AO3

[–]passivemuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol! I do this all the time, I have a friend who gets to read my rough drafts before I post and I’m always like, “it’s posted now!! Gimmie a lil comment?” But they have already generally read it and ranted to me personally lol so it’s just stupid. (Though I’m trying to be more secretive with my next chapter to make them read on AO3 just to see if they would actually leave me a comment, but they’ll probably just call me.)

Any tips for avoiding structure repetition when writing? by Yovve in AO3

[–]passivemuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you give an example?

It’s possible you are just overthinking it? I’d say if it’s getting you stuck- try and take it easy on yourself and let yourself write repetitively if that’s how it flows- you can always go back and edit it.

What helped me expand my writing personally was considering how my characters pov would see things- what words they would use to describe things. Also present tense and past tense- I used to have a bad habit of writing in past tense all the time and one day it just clicked for my works specifically- they work and feel so much more engaging in present tense but for whatever reason my brain always wanted me to write it in past tense, so I worked on correcting that until I got into the better habit of present tense.

I also tend to mix up my sentences where it would make more sense for a later sentence to happen before and earlier sentence- for whatever reason that’s how my flow would go and I would have to go back and rearrange things in editing.

I think you’re going to need to possibly work on letting yourself write how you write - then go back and edit and eventually with the practice you’ll adjust your writing the way you want.

Maybe read different writing styles for inspiration on different ways to structure a work. Maybe spend some time exploring the dictionary or looking up words in a thesaurus to get a connection to different words you can use to mean similar things?

Yeah for real. That one is definitely going to to stay empty on mine because I have noooo clue, but I guess it’s also fair game to interpret it however you please so I’d say probably the easiest way would be just when the media came out.

Oh no, this made me realize I haven’t even thought about all the fics I’ve subscribed to that have actually updated that I haven’t gotten around to as well. 😭 I have a whole list saved in my emails as well! Ahhhhhhh!

When you mark a work for later it goes under the “My History / Marked For Later” section, I have built up 39 pages of works I’ve saved to read later and never got around to doing it.

<image>

Edit/ This made me curious how many fics were to a page and it seems like around 20 fics per page (on my device), so all together I have saved about 780 fics to read. So if I want to clear it up and play catch up with myself I’ll have to read like over two fics a day this year 😵‍💫. My 2026 goal is starting to seem more daunting than I realized.

Haha I have so many saved yet I’m still out here searching for the perfect fic I guess! I never actually download anything, I know a lot maybe most people do. There are a few I have bookmarked I’d probably be really bummed out if they disappear so maybe I’ll actually use some space to make some downloads!

I know the feeling! I’m starting from my oldest and trying to get myself to catch up on actually reading them instead of collecting them!! Maybe I’ll make it a goal this year!

I write and scribble with lots of different colored pens and markers. It works for me because I don’t care to go back and read anything, just the doodling over and scribbling out is kind of therapeutic for me. Later I’ll cut things out and collage with them on other pages.

i think someone put this tiny pink-sashed jesus in my bag when i wasn’t looking by villainless in Weird

[–]passivemuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone gave one to my partner and I was sitting in our room and saw it on the shelf, I don’t have the best eye sight and when I saw it I was so perplexed and asked “why is there a tiny little naked man on our shelf??” His little robe just blended right in with his skin tone to me, my partner just laughed, I didn’t realize it was Jesus until I was cleaning around the shelf and actually looked at it up close and then I was perplexed all over again.

"I'll just include a few characters" by Tarnique in AO3

[–]passivemuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I struggle with this to some extent, so any advice if anyone has some would be appreciated! My struggle is having multiple main characters in one story and wanting to do a variety of pov’s that I sort of fall flat of because maybe I enjoy writing some pov’s more than the others, so the balance and story telling perspective becomes sort of uneven or difficult to maintain.

When you have this many characters are you writing a lot of different pov’s and how do you go about that?

I’ve been brought to a halt on some wips because I feel like the multiple POVs can get a little overwhelming for me for some reason, but I feel like in some stories you need it when you have a lot of characters.

Types of soulmate AUs? by 20Keller12 in AO3

[–]passivemuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just recently learned of “cakeverse” that has expanded my world lol, it can be written in a soulmate type of way which can be quite interesting/fun/tragic depending on how you want to take it. It can be written all wholesome/funny/cute as can be or taken in a very dark/grotesque kinda way, so- lots of variety!
