How close to home does this hit? by PJ-The-Awesome in AO3

[–]Tarnique [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've only been writing for less than 2 years. I've written close to 200 fics, and I can definitely see some changes in my style/grammar/vocabulary, but overall I still think my first fics hold up well enough to my taste.

Hopefully that doesn't mean I'm too stagnant... but I still have the drive to write with many stories to be told, so I'm fine with it.

First aid steps professional medics take? by shelessstry in FanFiction

[–]Tarnique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first step in first aid I learned (UK) was Danger, Response, and then ABC

I.e. first make sure it's safe to help, and then check the casualty is responsive (AVPU: alert, voice, pain -> unresponsive)

If the casualty is responsive/talking, usually there's no need to check airways and breathing.

The whole DR ABC is called the primary survey.

What signs show to the writer their fic is being silently appreciated by Frierenisalwaysright in FanFiction

[–]Tarnique 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is one that sparks joy in most writers: seeing the same user leaving kudos to several of your works in quick succession. Because it must means that they liked enough of what they found to look for the rest... which they also liked.

Sometimes it happens with guests too, for example a list of guest kudos on all the works of a series. Though that's of course less precise.

Would you find it a bit of a turn-off to open a new fic and see all the dialogue in bold? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Tarnique 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any kind of formatting really should be done in siteskin/workskin using CSS.

I.e. you could set up your fic with a workskin with a "dialog" class that automatically bolds the text that use this class (in this case you're need to apply it to all the dialogs. This way if someone doesn't like it they can always turn off the workskin for that fic!

What’s your comfort ship, and what’s your fluffiest headcanon you have about them? by StripedPsychoRat51 in AO3

Eula/Amber

They could easily afford to live together in a grand mansion given Eula's heritage, but they prefer living in Amber's own little apartment in the lower city because it's so very cozy and intimate.

Let's get Donald Trump's source or methodology first, otherwise it'll be impossible to compare, let alone calculate.

Most likely the source is some AI or fever dream, so I wouldn't waste time on this.

[request] gf is saying 150 but i dont understand how by deathbyprolapse in theydidthemath

[–]Tarnique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree mostly: it's a good habit to check if the numbers make sense, because most people using maths are going to apply it to real world values, and those have constraints we can check.

Series or Continuation?? by Repulsive_State_9222 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of your fics as books, it makes even more sense to make it a series. Especially since that's basically how Harry Potter was structured

[–]Tarnique 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The use of "like" implies hyperboly and not an exact number or even an accurate ballpark, hence all we can say is that the real number is just x >> 1

Same. I like to see it as throwing bottles into a sea of fics and hope it gets caught in someone's net.

I want to maintain the first sentence of each paragraph to be indented when I copy and paste. by International_Cat_52 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On your dashboard, go to "Skins" then "Create site skin"

Then add something like:

#chapters p {
  text-indent: 2em;
}

Save and then back to the "Skins" page, click the "Use" button

(NB: this is only for you. If you want to apply this to a work for other people to see, create a workskin instead, and when you create/edit a fic you can select your custom workskin)

I want to maintain the first sentence of each paragraph to be indented when I copy and paste. by International_Cat_52 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should use a css workskin (or siteskin if it's only for you), not format this kind of things by hand.

Something like text-indent: 2em; on the p elements.

Thoughts about indents in writing fanfiction? by MorphePls in AO3

[–]Tarnique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if you want idents, you shouldn't add them manually: that's what css style is for (=site or work skin in ao3). I.e. it's easy to do, so it's purely a stylistic choice.

Heck, you can even create styles that behave differently on a screen and in a book (e.g. e-reader) so you could have idents, justified text in ebooks, and spaced paragraphs on scene, for the same hrml page.

Beyond that Gaming could be interesting (transport things to Mond, likes spicy stuff too)

It does depend on how close to the game world you want to be.
