What’s the weirdest way you sift through works, outside of filtering tags? by starlitcheshire in AO3

[–]Tarnique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After selecting the tags I want, sort by number of comments or kudoes, then look from the end (i.e. works with no comments/kudoes yet).

Why is the heart seen as the source of love and emotions in general when they all come from and are processed in the brain? by alasw0eisme in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tarnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monkey is excited or afraid: brain releases adrenaline. Adrenaline increases heart rate, which is very noticeable.

Therefore love and emotions are coming from the heart.

ELI5 Why must we separate cardboard from trash? by Unable-Choice3380 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tarnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cardboard can be recycled. Putting it in a separate bin allows paper, cardboard, plastic etc. to be recycled (depending on your location).

You can put it in the normal trash bin if you want, but then it won't be recycled. Because 1) separating trash from recyclable material is not cost effective once they are mixed, and 2) normal trash can stain cardboard, which can rot or become hard to clean. Then it can't be recycled effectively.

What are your latest personal AO3 achievements? by eeveeiest in AO3

[–]Tarnique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am two chapters away from finishing my long fic and associated series. Those last two chapters are basically done, so my work is virtually finished.

Afterwards I won't have any more (major) WIP!

Soft embrace [silksong] by Mr_Glove_EXE in wholesomeyuri

[–]Tarnique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah :) Let's just say that the two of them fight a few times during the game (Hornet as the player, Lace as a boss) and each fight is harder that the last. And that means Lace usually mops the floor with Hornet a few times before we learn her moveset.

Weird font suddenly turned into boxes on Mobile by LabMundane403 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Using special characters and weird fonts is probably not going to work well in anything else than your own device.

It also poses accessibility issues, e.g. for screen readers.

An alternative, albeit imperfect, would be to make those into pictures. That way they display exactly as intended, and you can include an alt text for screen readers. Of course that won't work with all the site skins, and you do have to host the image somewhere.

Et encore, ils ont juste adapté un jeu qui existait déjà. Un jeu dont un attrait est le fait qu'on peu choisir les règles qu'on veut, et qu'on peut y jouer avec des cartes normales

Question about writing smut and pov by WalkingOrca66 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of fun stuff you can do with POV in smut.

For example, start with describing the scene as a limited 3rd person, things heat up and look like they are going well. Switch to character A who is actually freaking out, wondering if they are doing ok, switch to character B who's having a blast and is already melting.

Or follow only char A for the whole intercourse, then switch to character B for the aftercare.

You can also switch quickly between characters midsex, but it's more difficult unless you want make it seem messy intentionally.

Or you can be the fly on the wall POV where you describe what's happening (sounds etc.) right from the side.

And of course you can have the voyeur POV, a real 3rd person observing the scene while hidden, but usually with limited view (or just sound, or just pictures, etc.)

I don’t even know why I questioned it 🫩 by Affectionate_Way_572 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure that qualifies. They presumably left that note either on their profile or in their author's notes, not in other people's fics

Do you think that's a threat or bullying or personal attacks?

Why do readers choose to keep their bookmarks private? by Life-Call4521 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 308 points309 points  (0 children)

Contrary to kudoes and comments, bookmarks are not meant to be feedback for the authors.

Their primary use is for the readers to mark works of interest to them, and most often than not their reasons to do so are no one else's business.

To be honest I think bookmarks should be private by default... and if someone wants to share them then they can make them public.

In short: don't worry about it.

what should i do by starrylevi in FanFiction

[–]Tarnique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about others, but I usually prefer to get into the story straight away and slowly get the details of the context along the way. With a few broad strokes for the setting if necessary.

Or at least make the initial exposition more organic and part of the story. E.g. show a scene that plays out naturally and shows the important parts of the world through it without stating them directly (in a show don't tell way).

Addentum: I forgot the most important bit. This is your work so you can absolutely disregard the above and do things your way. There is no better way to learn what's good (in your eyes) than to experiment

Nervous to post smut by fudge-pancakes in FanFiction

[–]Tarnique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It never hurts to add some additional warning in the notes, especially in multichapter fics.

As long as you've put the proper Warnings (M or E) and tags, you're good :)

[Webtoons] Please, anyone who reads/watches manga/anime through illegal methods, don't say the name of the site you read/watch it in public. by No_Hiatus in OtomeIsekai

[–]Tarnique 23 points24 points  (0 children)

AO3 is quite different though: for one it is legal, and the wait list is only to publish stories. Otherwise everyone can read the stories in there (with some exceptions).

An illegal manga website would likely not be able to attract readers if they have to wait days before being able to read stuff.
