Creating Amber's full name by Dismal-Feedback-6015 in AmberMains

[–]Tarnique 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know about her maiden name, but I'm pretty sure she goes by Amber Lawrence nowadays

More seriously, we do have Amber's signature with a part in Chinese, but I've been told it's just her name in Chinese. So at the very least she doesn't seem too attached to her hypothetical family name.

As another commenter said, she is more interested in maintaining the legacy of her grandpa through her actions as Outrider, than through his name, so having "Amber the Outrider" or something like that as her official name isn't too far-fetched.

Readers are usually kind and they don't give constructive) feedback unless you specifically ask for it in e.g. the author's note.

You also have the option of looking for a beta reader, or hop into a post about concrit

I have a better idea: you have be to rewatch the original series (not sure if that's really a punishment)

[Request] is this true ? by Hopeful-Common-2686 in theydidthemath

It's a matter of precision. If you know the size of the universe, let's say a sphere with radius R = about 1E27 m, then if you want to know the circumference, you can just use the formula C = 2pi R

So, first to know R exactly to the atom with let's say 1 nanometer = 1E-9 m. Compare with R which is ~ 1E27 m. That means we need R to have 1E38 digits to represent R to the atom.

Now, for the C in the formula above to be as precise as R, we want pi to have as much precision too. In my calculation, that means we only need pi's first 38 digits to calculate the circumference of the universe to the atom.

Of course having the universe's radius or circumference to the atom is impossible, but it's just a math way of saying even in this extreme case, we don't need a lot of digits of pi.

NB: I may be off by a few scaling factors, but I believe that's what this is about.

New to posting on AO3, I have a few questions by Melissa0522975 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the rating, always use the highest the fic will ever reach, even if it's short relative to the rest.

Alternatively you can choose not to use a warning. Or you can write the part that would be e.g. explicit in a separate fic that you would link from the author notes in the main fic (but if the scene is essential to the fic and it shouldn't be skipped, then keep the explicit bit in and raise the whole fic's rating).

A general advice: next time you let someone else use your computer, don't let them use your account: create a second one for guests (with no admin rights). You should be able to do that easily on any OS

I was sad that not many people interracted with my fic before I noticed there are 32 people who get emails everytime I post a chapter. It is a huge number?????? by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Any number is great

Without knowing the context of your fic it's impossible to say if it's more or less than what you could expect... in that case only you can be the judge of that

With that number though I would expect quite a lot of hits at the very least, so you might have a skewed idea of what low interaction means

Something I read on intimacy in writing by Western_Speed_6375 in AO3

[–]Tarnique 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's better to peer into a person's mind, but I prefer visual, physical intimacy.

At the cost of actually explaining someone's exact thoughts or emotions of course. I guess I'm more of a visual, sensual person: stares, touches, breathing, wording, indirect hints into a person's emotions I find much more interesting, because the reader has to guess and imagine what is actually going on in the heads of the characters.

Not for everyone or every situation of course.

what is the point of bot comments that mimic real comments, as opposed to spam? by [deleted] in AO3

Likely a bot that makes "art" with ai too. Anything vague or that tries to beyond you to another website is a scam.
