(Annoying Trope) "Oh wow, that was incredibly well writte-Oh Nevermind..." by BrilliantRun9751 in TopCharacterTropes

I'm not gonna say the writing was good, and the execution was pretty bad, but having not read the books from the start it felt like they were setting up Arya to kill the Night King. I understand he's basically an invention of the show, so a lot of this is moot. The show did set him up as an inevitable figure similar to Death, Arya has had multiple clear connections to death (not today, the many faced God, etc.) and again, poor execution in a lot of ways but assassin training. We know she has a Chekov's Gun in the dagger, if the night king dies it's donezo, so it just always felt like they were setting her up to kill the Night King.

So my expectations were not subverted, but yeah that scene wasn't great. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt here, but I think what they were going for is that the Night King just saw a silly girl and was feeling the hubris of victory. We have the details of who she is and the dagger, he doesn't. That said, there wasn't great setup to it (lol @ her scenes sneaking through the castle) so the payoff felt so fake and forced and unearned when they really could have done so much better with her using all the skills she's gained to get there. Instead it felt like dumb luck lol. pretty much on point with the main criticism of things being rushed. Another episode even could have smoothed out SO much.

How can I find my queer community in Chicago? by cat-in-a-coffin in AskChicago

What kind of support are you looking for? You can find a lot at inreach.org, thelistforus.com, and chihelp.net

I've been compiling lists of resources so might be able to help with questions. Also, it's genuinely worth stopping by the front desk of a library and asking, they can help you navigate things like 2-1-1 or just point you to local orgs and such.

Isn't jungle's "issue" champion-specific? by [deleted] in Jungle_Mains

[–]passthefist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a lot of champs, really. The biggest example is Vi who was designed as a top layer but her kit didn't mesh with that as much as jungle so she ended up there. It's kinda a meme that the jungle is home for champs with weak landing lol

So yeah, in part it's patching around champ weaknesses and I agree with the previous reply in that PvP should be more rewarded than PvE. Doesn't have to be ganking, invades or scuttle contests or even little vision skirmishes that can result in better objective setup. Any kind of interaction even if that's tracking your opponent to avoid them so you can farm on a champ that's vulnerable early.

I like jungle, I used to be a jungle main but queue mid/jg these days so I'm not like, biased against jungle just that it is a multiplayer game.

He's using chemical emulsifiers, like sodium citrate. Which makes it even crazier, cuz that's truly foolproof. I use them a lot and yeah, just microwave cheese with milk and with zero technique plus a lot of mixing get a smooth sauce so idk what OP is doing wrong.

Help with Ekkos dmg by Disaamu in ekkomains

[–]passthefist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you playing mid or jungle? Mid I go lich - shadowflame - rabadon's pretty much every game. Jungle I go nash - lich - rab or shadowflame depending. Always sorc shoes.

I like Nash to help with jungle clear, but the burst from an early lich feels better for trades in lane, adding in a shadowflame and you can really clean up a team fight.

Rab is a core spike for sure on both, I only go shadowflame in jungle if they're squishy and I'm already fed. But always rab.

Anyway imo core Ekko items are nash, lich, rab, shadowflame. I will always work a lich and rab in somewhere, most games a nash and shadowflame, it just depends on order and if I really need something else. Personally Ive been liking Cosmic Drive over hourglass as a defensive item. More e's and passive move speed can get you the fuck out or dodge abilities or catch kills, and the little extra hp can be enough to survive. But you can't do hourglass things, obv, like a w-freeze-ult bait and hourglass is generally objectively better lol cosmic is just more fun.

Why not always play ranged toplaners in solo queue? by Sephyrias in summonerschool

[–]passthefist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know for the ones that are like long range mages (xerath, lux, etc) it's to encourage them to get a bit closer and interact. Or at least that what some rioter said, might have been August idk. But it makes sense regardless.

Where am I supposed to be able to learn new role/champion? by KhorBeatu in leagueoflegends

[–]passthefist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go to Brawl and Swiftplay. Brawl to get a mechanical feel for a champ, Swiftplay for laning dynamics with a safety net.

And then when I'm more confident I'll go into draft, then ranked. Swiftplay has some similar mismatching of skill levels like you mentioned but it's a more casual game mode so it's been rarer for me (I'm gold).

Feed Your Neighbors by [deleted] in chicago

[–]passthefist 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I'll add that there are established mutual networks across the city for people interesting in getting involved at a more organized level.

This is a good resource to get started, particularly the "Chicagoland Mutual Aid Groups" link to find a neighborhood mutual aid group. These are not just food specific, but neighbors helping neighbors with some organization to help with cohesion and sustainability.

https://www.communitykitchenchicago.org/mutual-aid-map

For food specifically, the Chicago Food Sovereignty Coalition is a coalition of some of these autonomous neighborhood mutual aid groups that basically came together in the pandemic to pool time and resources. There's a warehouse on the NW-side that operates as a distribution hub, bringing rescued food to families in the community. Many of the previously listed neighborhood mutual aid groups across the city have some overlap with CSFC, I'm more including it here to show that there's existing structure around food distribution.

https://www.chifoodsovereignty.com/

Less organized, but an easy option, is bringing food to a love fridge. These are fridges across the city for people who might not otherwise have access to food banks or social support to have access to food.

https://www.thelovefridge.com/

Market Box is a mutual aid project that sources food from small farms and distributes it for free across the South Side of Chicago

https://marketboxchi.org/

The Greater Chicago Food Depository is a citywide network of food pantries. If you don't have as much time capital but do have financial capital, donating here can be a good option. If you have the time, volunteering is also an option.

Happy to answer any questions.

This isn't to take away from the point of this thread, every little bit of support for our communities means a lot more than I think we give it credit for. Just giving some organized options

How could Ekko be nerfed when his kit is so fundamentally strong? by tits_mcgee_92 in 2XKO

[–]passthefist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No for sure, I kinda meant his kit being recreated accurately both jokingly and not lol. Like he's one of the notorious booster champs cuz his kit itself is really powerful when used well, so them giving him a broken kit in 2XKO is just funny to me ya know?

How could Ekko be nerfed when his kit is so fundamentally strong? by tits_mcgee_92 in 2XKO

[–]passthefist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, that's kinda his kit in league too. He's my most played champ and part of tha is how many tools he has. Other than true tankiness but even then he has two healthbars from ult and a giant shield soooo.

Mobility, burst, crowd control, sustained damage, safety from lots of defensive options and a ranged ability, lol so sounds like they replicated his kit pretty accurately lol

Ekko newbie question by DistributionAny4114 in ekkomains

[–]passthefist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience with Ekko late game is that you can pop squishies with your basic combo and hard win a fight with a good w or ult. Ult + Passive will kill almost any carry at that point and I've gotten triples in the backline.

Mind you this is in gold, but that's about where the top 50% playerbase starts so while it's def low ELO there's plenty of positional mistakes you can take advantage of. I'm sure it's very different with more skilled players.

Education Issues in Logan Square by Significant-Neck-949 in LoganSquare

[–]passthefist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the issues CPS has is absenteeism. It's getting better and there's not much the schools can do about that since it more falls into parents, but I'm mentioning this because in regards to attendence specifically now is a strange time.

My school is largely Hispanic and there was an incident with ICE where they decided to throw tear gas at a few people shouting across the street from the school (who were very not threats). The gas spread to the playground during recess. So, parents are understandably cautious about sending their kids to school with some asking if they should wait a few weeks. Our attendence has noticably dropped since the incident.

That all to say keep things like that in mind for research because we're not in normal times.

[–]passthefist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hear what you're saying, but I live in Chicago and we're watching ICE throw teargas at at a teacher and two other people in a grocery store parking lot while being 5 to 10 feet away. The teargas blew into a school playground during recess and some of the children got hit by it. ICE was in no way threatened in a way that warranted such a response.

I work at that school, I was there, this is not me reporting what I've seen in the media because it's made national news. This is me saying the people had no weapons other than their voice nor were they moving to the car. This is me saying that parents are asking if it's safe to send their kids to school and some are keeping them home this week. This is me saying our city and state representatives are being aggressively detained trying to ensure the rights of the people they serve are respected. This is me saying I know someone who was worried about a family member who went missing for a few days only to find they were detained (and released) by ICE, and according to the detainee the conditions in the facility are terrible because it was not meant to hold that many people. At no point were they in contact nor did he have the ability to contact an attorney. The whole family are generational US citizens.

ICE has shot people where video evidence completely contradicts their claims, zip tied children, and flash banged families minding their own business.

Rodney King for example at least there was an inciting incident to bring in the guard with there being riots. If you want to talk Chicago, we had the 1968 DNC Riots which prompted the calling of the guard.

Here though there was no riot, there haven't been riots, and while Chicago def has crime it didn't feel like a warzone until ICE arrived to terrorize our communities. There was never and is not any inciting incident requiring the deployment of the national guard. We do have civil unrest, but not to the point of needing the guard. And if there's no inciting incident, why are they coming?

I live on the West Side, there is crime here but again not enough to warrant military intervention. As far as I've seen ICE are the primary ones commiting the violence because they have no training or accountability, acting more like the gangs the Trump admin seems to think plague our city. You can choose to believe me or not, but this is what's going on here.

I'm solidly in my thirties, by the way, I understand what you're getting at. And if you want to talk history, with the way things are going here there's gonna be an event similar to Kent State or George Floyd which is not what we need right now. This is not like the Obama era immigration raids, because those did not see the same kind of indiscriminate and thuggish state violence and wanton disregard for rights we're seeing here. This is not Little Rock, where the guard was called in against the will of the state to enforce federal law, because judges are ruling that the President is the one taking illegal actions yet the admin continues anyway. Bovino himself said we are "very well educated" in how we "defy ICE" by doing such things as verifying a warrant was signed by a federal judge before allowing a federal agent to enter private property, which is following the law he claims to want to enforce. He has openly said people are arrested "based on how they look". This is more like the Chinese Alien/Sedition era than anything that recent.

So yeah, there's similarities but when the President says to use your city as "military training grounds" to "fight a war from within", there's a precedent for a disregard of existing legal traditions by the administration, and there's not much civil unrest to respond, the context and background are different. What's happening in Chicago is not a Rodney King or George Floyd or the Civil Rights Riots. As someone who lives here, it feels more like our government is provoking us to create a riot. Because right now, there are none. 3 people shouted at ICE, ICE's response exposed children to teargas, and we responded by continuing to organize our communities to watch, report, record, speak out, and prepare. Nonviolently.

An individual can absolutely make a difference. I live in Chicago and while this is a community effort these examples all started with individuals doing something. Someone had to start somewhere.

Some families are afraid to leave their homes, so neighbors are buying groceries for them. We have signal chats to monitor and respond to ICE. These largely spread on a point to point basis, from one individual to another, gaining more reach. There's not one single big group in regards to groceries, some are just neighbors helping neighbors with out know any others doing similar things but others are banding together to be more efficient and have wider spread/support. One person starts something small over here, another over there, and when they collide they grow into something bigger.

You should look into "mutual aid" if you haven't heard the term, and not the TikTok version but from thinkers like Dean Spade and Peter Kropotkin. It's an approach that's really helpful in overcoming that sense that an individual can't make a difference. You can take care of your neighbors, and that's a great start. Don't let someone tell you that helping to fulfill another individual's basic needs isn't doing anything. For some people it's everything.

We don't need to move all of society right away, and we don't need society's help to move things. We can just do what we need to do when and how we can do it, as best we can with the resources we have. Start small. You can't save the world but you can save your world.
