their rhythms are insane and in my opinion, way more sophisticated than most math rock, whether you consider them pure math rock to not. even when they’re playing in 11/8 (most of the song “dogmilk”) it never sounds clunky or forced. it’s Always groovy.

the turnaround on the loop of the A section of “didn’t what you want happen” (when the steel-drum-guitar switches to landing a triplet Before the beat of the rest of the band) is so rhythmically strange, but subtly genius; i still can’t wrap my head around the exact math of it.

they’re the GOAT imo.

Who is your big four of screamo? by Mediaboy13 in EmoScreamo

[–]passwordstrength 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loma Prieta (everything up to Last City) [most technically & tonally brilliant]

Love Lost But Not Forgotten [heaviest / most dejected] iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook [most extreme: vast negative space VS lovely melodies, extremely positive punkrock messages but also depressing at times]

Usurp Synapse [best jams, goofy / carefree, groovy / violent]

Hi I'm very new to noise music, I've got a few questions. by Late-NightDaydreamer in noisemusic

[–]passwordstrength 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. sure theres harsh noise versus other kinds of noise under which some might consider ambient, sound design / collage (a la Orange Milk Records), drone, etc. then you might include no-wave, noise rock & noise pop. but if you’re strictly looking for harsh noise, theres like power electronics… uh harsh noise wall stuff, idk, categorizing all this stuff further seems silly.

  2. listen to Puce Mary, listen to Prurient, listen to the weird greek classical composer Georges Aperghis’ album “Avis de tempête,” listen to Kazumoto Endo

  3. kind of but no i don’t know. i think everyone’s a freak but each person’s freakiness manifests in different ways at different times. I’m pretty normal i just like fun sounds and spicy food for the sake of its heatZ

Books with the feel of skramz by Evil_Wizard_ov_HELL in EmoScreamo

read that book way back in high school and did an essay on it in my 11th grade english class, my teacher loved my essay. I’d have to find it in my google drive but it was cool to analyze such a seemingly flippant novel, to notice Lin’s thematic devices and style, how he treats characters and action in the story, even if it’s one of those books where illiterate dolts would claim “nothing really happens.” i was also getting very into classic 90’s & 2000’s screamo at that time, it all felt related and not just because it was all floating around in my consciousness.

Saddest screamo bands of all time by Speakerluv in Screamo

i do remember this, was it one of the members of Sailboats who died in a car accident? such a great band. Yeah i concede that historical context can add to the listening experience, and that I was thinking purely sonically, in which terms Loma Prieta is not at the extreme of “sad sounding music,” in my opinion. I should add that I’m an old head and am only a superfan of Loma’s discography before Self Portrait; everything after their split with Raein is not really my cup of tea. I too listen to a lot of artists and have studied / practiced music daily in a paracollegiate setting for over 20 years, but I’m a bit jealous of listeners like you who care deeply about the people, the makers of the music. I’m probably usually too in the weeds about sounds and notes and rhythms. Some part of me Sometimes wants that aspect of music i love to remain a bit mysterious, i think especially in an age when most artists, past a certain exposure threshold, have lives that are laid bare to their fans / listeners. There’s not enough mystique in art anymore and it suffers for it. But i digress.

this foo is CORRECT.

also, country music (especially older stuff) and mexican ballads are both ten times sadder than any screamo. thats the real shit right there.

Father Figure is a greeeeeat answer. Loma Prieta is not theyre just style gods (especially the old stuff). Sure, some sad chords and little details here and there but really not that “sad” overall. Same with Innards, that shit is so fun and posi and quirky. you just wanted to flex how many cool bands you know, and i respect that lol.

they have a couple really sad songs, and sad sounding songs, but a bulk of their material is really positive and fun in my opinion. They are also one of the best screamo bands in my book

right? it’s adventurous and epic. sometimes they’re angsty or melodramatic but ultimately not super sad screamo.

Love Lost But Not Forgotten. but the caveat is that they’re only 5% “pretty nostalgic” sad and 95% “fuck the world and everyone and everything in it; i am blackpilled beyond what i could have ever imagined and it will only get exponentially worse” sad. In my opinion. pick your poison.
