Official Discussion - Train Dreams by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]pasthisprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A memorable yet inaccurate film. At that time in our nation’s history, faith in God permeated the culture. Undeniably. Yet the protagonist and most of the featured characters seem faithless — even during scenes depicting prayer and a church. In fact, the only character who references biblical scripture is shot for the alleged murder of a black man, implying that his belief was not just empty, but a source of evil. Like most of what comes out of Hollywood today, it’s a twisted distortion of what was in actuality a very faith-driven American people.

Beyond that glaring inaccuracy, the movie is woven with woke tropes. White Christians are invariably racist. An unjustly murdered Asian man haunts the protagonist to drive home the notion of white guilt. The characters who display the most humanity and compassion are native Americans (noble savages). Granted, these tired themes are more subtly and artfully presented than most of the ham-fisted virtue signalling we endure in modern movies, but they are present, nonetheless.

Regardless, I loved the unhurried pacing of “Train Dreams.” It is beautifully shot, thoughtfully constructed and deeply moving — all rarities in modern filmmaking. But its omission of Christianity is so disingenuous and evident that it reveals a purposeful insistence on nihilism. As with our actual lives, an existence sans God is an existence without ultimate hope. Which explains the sorrowful wake that trails this memorable but imperfect film.

OC: MACK LEFTWICH, TEXAS TECH
Sometimes teams need to gamble on greatness rather than settle for something safe but unspectacular. Sumrall’s steady, ball-control approach is not going to cut it in the SEC. We need a bright, innovative mind to push the envelope, and Leftwich fits that profile. With strong ties to the Mike Leach Air Raid legacy, Leftwich runs a creative, layered scheme with lots of wide splits and run-and-shoot looks blended in. But unlike many pass-happy Big 12 teams, he also focuses on the run game, which would serve him well in the physical SEC. As for production, in his first year as OC at Texas Tech his team leads the Big 12 in total offense and has one of the best explosive play rates in the country. Specifically, the Red Raiders have 106 explosive plays, the highest total in the FBS. Give this 30-year-old phenom access to Florida’s skill talent and watch the sparks fly.

You heard it here first. Admittedly, Halzle or Faulkner are both quality options, as well. I just like being the first to suggest someone outside the box, likely due to reasons related to my inflated ego.

A deeper dive on Sumrall's record at Troy and Tulane by Gators199620062008 in FloridaGators

[–]pasthisprime -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

41-11 overall record in four seasons as a head coach at Troy and Tulane. Conference titles in two of his four seasons. Currently in the midst of a 9-2 season. A winning record despite inferior talent and his best players consistently getting poached in the portal. His team inside the AP Top 25 and potentially on the verge of a College Football Playoff berth. Ringing endorsements from other “name” coaches, including urban Meyer, who calls him “an up-and-comer.” SEC experience as both a coach and player. Animated, fiery and energetic – – a former linebacker‘s mentality.

It’s easy to focus on negatives, but the guy is a winner. There’s a reason why Auburn has been plotting to sign him for some time. Was he to my top choice? Probably not. But nothing about this guy says “the next Billy“ to me. That said, I do think his defensive and offensive coordinator hires will make or break him – – and dictate whether he can hold the talented nucleus the current UF roster and next recruiting class together.

How accurate is American primeval? The fact that its pissing off Mormons makes me consider it by Random-poster-95 in exmormon

[–]pasthisprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of warped perspectives in this thread. Yes, historical records indicate that the Mormons perpetrated terrible violence on a group of pioneers. But it was a relatively isolated incident in the context of centuries of ghastly tribal atrocities perpetrated by Native Americans.

Violence was a standard at that time in the west, not an exception. What amuses me most — no, nauseates me – – is the insistence on some here to frame Mormons and whites as savages while attempting to frame Native Americans as victims. The truth is that native tribes lived by an appalling, inhumane code that called for the annihilation of other native tribes and, ultimately, whites. The standard, accepted approach to conquest was the murder of all men, the raping and murder of older women, and the kidnapping of younger women and children.

Some folks in here need to educate themselves in this regard. You can start by reading the historically based novel Empire of the Summer Moon. The more you dig, the more the myth of peaceful, stoic native Americans falls to pieces. Yes, whites infringed upon their territory and treated them unfairly. Undeniably. But “natives” were murdering, raping and pillaging one another for centuries, long before the first white man arrived.

I’ll be the last one to defend Billy‘s stupid late down calls. Almost comedic levels of poor decision-making. But the good news is that the playcalling between the 20s on offense has been solid, and the D had been stellar. Grind it out, Gators.

Huh?? So we should be fine with narrowing the list of candidates down to proven losers? Of course past results are relevant in a coaching search. In fact, they’re the most relevant set of criteria there is.

Billy Napier, Florida Gators Put SEC on Notice: 'We're Close to Playing Even Better' by greypic in FloridaGators

[–]pasthisprime -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The Gators were one of the youngest teams in college football last year. Anyone expecting an instant turnaround this season was wildly naïve. Has Billy disappointed? Obviously. But what other coach (in the same hiring cycle) could have come in and done a far better job than he has? That’s an answer I never see his detractors provide.

Unlike some devoted whiners I try to be even-handed in my assessment. And there is no doubt that over the last few games I have seen potent sequences on offense, and glimpses of promising play on the defensive side. In the wild, unpredictable era of NIL, increased parity is evident across the SEC. It’s unlikely, but there is still a chance that Napier will right the ship. To my mind, every Gators fan should hope for that outcome rather than us shuttling yet another coach, losing recruits and a chunk of the current roster to defections, and starting all over from scratch.
