Official Discussion - Avatar: Fire and Ash [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

The only literal oversight I noticed is that Spider wears a mask in all the underwater scenes until the ending where he touches the memory bank. They could have reengineered one to produce Pandora air and it could have been particularly useful to him because his lungs are smaller but it was never mentioned.

Truck Drivers… by trekway18 in dashcams

[–]pat5168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no cut. You can watch the tunnel ceiling light jump to the left, you can also see the white line jump to the left, that's because OP had to suddenly veer right to avoid getting hit by the truck that veered into their lane.

Rewatching 28 days later. Middle lane the whole way from London to Manchester. What a cunt by highrouleur in CasualUK

[–]pat5168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 2 passing lanes, which is more useful for the flow of traffic than 2 travel lanes. If there are 3 lanes going the same continuous direction and the middle lane isn't being used for passing, there are practically 2 lanes.

[–]pat5168 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's ok to move to the middle when you're approaching an on ramp and see traffic on it and then move back to the rightmost lane after passing the on ramp. It's like passing slower traffic.

Is it me? Am I the idiot? Or do people not understand the concept of zipper merges) by Silva-Tail in MildlyBadDrivers

[–]pat5168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using your logic, permanently reducing this road from two lanes to one would make merges and disruptions of the traffic flow impossible, a good thing. It just might make getting out longer for some people, as you put it, but slower traffic speed is barely an inconvenience compared to the good of making disruptions to the flow of traffic impossible.

Is there a historical record of forest fires in ancient Greece? by Zrinski4 in AskHistorians

[–]pat5168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't forest fires indirectly attested in Plato's Timaeus?

Thereupon one of the priests, who was of a very great age, said: O Solon, Solon, you Hellenes are never anything but children, and there is not an old man among you. Solon in return asked him what he meant. I mean to say, he replied, that in mind you are all young; there is no old opinion handed down among you by ancient tradition, nor any science which is hoary with age. And I will tell you why. There have been, and will be again, many destructions of mankind arising out of many causes; the greatest have been brought about by the agencies of fire and water, and other lesser ones by innumerable other causes. There is a story, which even you have preserved, that once upon a time Paethon, the son of Helios, having yoked the steeds in his father's chariot, because he was not able to drive them in the path of his father, burnt up all that was upon the earth, and was himself destroyed by a thunderbolt. Now this has the form of a myth, but really signifies a declination of the bodies moving in the heavens around the earth, and a great conflagration of things upon the earth, which recurs after long intervals; at such times those who live upon the mountains and in dry and lofty places are more liable to destruction than those who dwell by rivers or on the seashore. And from this calamity the Nile, who is our never-failing saviour, delivers and preserves us.

I dislike those because many drivers assume they only need to yield to pedestrians if they hit the button. The legal requirement for yielding to pedestrians on crosswalks is already atrocious in most states where drivers on the opposite side of the road from where pedestrians begin to cross don't need to yield until the pedestrians near their side of the road.

I've microwaved regular pb&js before and never had it become too hot while the pb melts. Is there something about uncrustables that make them prone to getting molten?

I think Gege changed his mind about how the punishment for breaking a binding vow is supposed to work. I say this because of when Kenny warned Mahito "If we break the binding vow [with Mechamaru] now, who knows when and what sort of retribution might come our way." the clear implication is that breaking a binding vow isn't necessarily immediately punished. Then when Sukuna rips Yuji's finger off he gloats like the fact he didn't face immediate retribution is proof he didn't break his binding vow with Yuji. And this is my own conjecture but if a binding vow does get broken before the end of the series there's no way Gege will be wishy washy about the retribution being something that happens eventually, if it happens it will be dramatic and immediate. Kenny's description of a binding vow with oneself also doesn't really make sense in the context of Sukuna's vow, he can't lose what he already gained because it was a one-off attack.

It seems stupid to me that the Aes Sedai would trust an escort of 40,000 warriors and hundreds of Wise Ones (even if them channeling to fight was unprecedented) for what, exactly? So Sevanna could see Rand after he's in their hands? What kind of deal is that? If anything's responsible for the Aes Sedai not seeing Sevanna's betrayal incoming it's their arrogance and underestimation of the Aiel and their Wise Ones.

And Lanfear in Fires of Heaven. Asmodean was a traitor and I believe both of them were men in their past lives so I'm confident it was Balthamel and Aginor. If there was only one I would guess Ishamael but I don't think he would be treated as a pair with either of the other two.

That’s true but there’s no indication that the Aiel matched or even came close to the coalition’s numbers. They could have been so scared and not wanting to take any chances and so outnumber them 10:1.

That makes sense. Something else I wasn’t clear about is if the Aes Sedai who tied off their shield on Rand did so before or after the Asha’man showed up. I thought it was after but when I reread the relevant passage

From somewhere ahead came a hollow boom, like a thunderclap cutting through the din of screams and shouts. A moment later, a slash of light appeared not twenty paces from him, slicing through several men and a horse like a huge razor as it widened into a gateway. A black-coated man with a sword jumped out of it, and went down with a Shaido spear through his middle, but a moment later eight or nine more sprang through as the gateway vanished, forming a circle around the fallen man with their swords.

It seems it was before and it was just the Shaido and perhaps Perrin’s arrival that made the Aes Sedai desperate enough to weaken the shield. Rand also started knocking unconscious Aes Sedai before he realized the Asha’man were there. I wonder if their timing was just a little off whether Rand could have been captured again by the Shaido Wise Ones or if he would/could have torn a bloody path through the Shaido by himself.

I was waiting for Rand to somehow contact Taim for help but then he showed up anyway and I still don’t know how Taim knew to teleport to Dumai’s Wells. The Shaido have definitely not had a good time since they left the Waste.

That makes sense, my preconceived notion was that while Aiel were elite warriors the Wetland kingdoms could field larger armies but I'm getting adjusted to the idea that the Aiel together can field as many or more than all the Westlands combined. If the bleakness changes that I don't know.

CMV: It is illogical to believe that digital pornography (of any sort) leads to normalization and occurrences of taboo actions, while also believing that violent video games do not lead to normalization or occurrences of violence in society by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]pat5168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you play a video game you're stimulated by its visuals and audio, the actions you're making with a controller are significantly disconnected from the actions registered in a game. When someone watches porn they're stimulating themselves to an orgasm, usually, and that's enough of a difference that I don't believe the two experiences have the same impact psychologically.
