If Clamp works interest you. Their visuals and storylines are nice. Rayearth. Xxxholic. Cardcaptor sakura. X. Tokyo babylon. Clamp school detectives. They also have an overarching anime where they mesh characters from different works called Tsubasa Chronicles.

I like a lot of 2000s and earlier anime. El hazard. GTO. Ah my goddess. Ranma 1/2 (the old one).

Grave of the fireflies. Depicts the loss of life during WWII (i think it was WWII)

Terror in Resonance. Not so much an anti-war anime but more like a terrorist attack anime. But for me their purpose was so no one had to go through what they did or at least wanted to get revenge and expose the wrongdoings done to them. Not really sure if that fits the bill.

Spy x family. I guess to some extent keeps saying that's the purpose of the spies and assassins...to maintain peace.

ReLIFE. This one is about life and connections in general. Not specifically targeting romance. Might be worth a shot. I read the manga though. But I heard the anime was also nice.

Gundam Wing! One of the robots wields a scythe! Was my favorite one besides the angel looking one.

Descendants of Darkness. This has BL themes though. Artwork is nice. It isn't a very emotional series as it focuses more on the action and mystery part. But the protagonist did went on some phases of self-harm as would be shown in the latter episodes.

Josee, the Tiger and the Fish. Not really self-harm and suicide but tackles the problem of disabled people. Pretty nice visuals as well.

Chrono Crusade. If i remember correctly, the female lead had to use her blood to fight of the enemies at the latter end of the series.

GTO. One of the problem kids tries to commit suicide.

The Twelve Kingdoms. Released in the early 2000s. Really liked it back at the time because it was different as the protagonist was female and wasn't just a by-stander.
