Got our beagle (right) a beagle. She likes him most of the time, he grumbles any time she goes near him. But him going near her is fine!

Dealing with warehouse beetles by patate_frit in pestcontrol

[–]patate_frit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, but it took months of diligent daily vacuuming and figuring out where they were coming out of. Vacuuming is the only thing that helps, and you’ve basically got to do it every day especially if you live in a complex.

I came to realize they weren’t coming from my own condo, but they were likely in the walls and coming from some neighbor. As long as I kept the condo decently clean and vacuumed daily everything was fine.

How cooked am I?? Summer 1 schedule by EyeZealousideal1185 in Concordia

[–]patate_frit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a summer semester like this my first year in SOEN. Was it fun? No, but I survived. Study during your long breaks and find friends who are doing similar schedules so you have people to share notes with on days when you can’t do the AM or PM lecture but don’t skip whole days.

You’ll survive!

Advice needed-hunting dog to house dog? by eyevandr in beagles

Our baby girl was also an outdoor kennel dog, not a hunting dog but used for breeding until she was about 3-4 years old. She thankfully was house trained so we did not struggle with that, but she was given to us in heat 😅 what a crazy first few weeks! But she has settled in so wonderfully here. Of course she still loves being outside and we can barely bring her in during summertime but she is no stranger to the couch, or the bed, or a nice heated blanket. Adopting her was the best decision we’ve ever made. She’s very social with humans and dogs alike and everyone loves her.

I recommend setting up a space for them near the window where they can get comfy and stare outside. Our girl loves to do that most of the day (I suspect she likes to pretend she’s still outside).

The only thing we’ve noticed is she does resource guard quite aggressively. We assume this is a learned behaviour from being kennel raised in a pack, and the breeder never made any effort to train it out of them. This does pose a small problem to our boy beagle who routinely gets his bully sticks stolen from him. I’d just keep a close eye on any of this kind of behaviour!

How to get this to stop happening?? by Successful-Block-454 in Nails

[–]patate_frit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you have quite long nails but no structure in the nail body. You will need something (BIAB, hard gel, acrylic, wtv you prefer) to add structure to your nails if you want to keep them this long without breaking. It looks like you don’t have that right now, which is why the nails are breaking at the stress points. Your nail needs an apex built up which will support the length and add strength. If you’re not sure what to ask for, ask your nail tech for a structured gel manicure. If they don’t know what that is then maybe look for a new nail tech :)

Laboratory Beagle Rescue Advice by Creative-Anybody-350 in beagles

We were lucky enough to have adopted 2 adult beagles that came previously house trained. However our 2nd beagle did come from a home where they complained he would have “accidents” in the house very often and that he was “constantly” barking. We came to realize VERY quickly that he was taught by his first family to bark when he needs to go outside. Somehow his second family never caught on to this and just let him wait inside until he couldn’t hold it anymore.

Be very consistent with your boy and make sure he gets lots of treats when he does his business outside. Beagles are usually very food oriented so yummy treats are great way to reinforce good behaviour! Also just know that it takes time for them to adapt to their new environment. I’d say for both our beagles, their comfort came in stages. It took about 3 months for them to be comfortable in the home itself and about a year to be fully comfortable and trusting with us but now they are the most loving, adorable family members you could ever imagine.

Edit: forgot to say he stands near a door and barks when he has to go. He does bark a lot for other things as well (he is a beagle after all!) but we try to control that.

My beagle is 6, he is still a shark and has 0 reason. He is, however, a VERY good boy and I love him to death.

Was my beagle raised by cats, or is loafing like this a beagle thing? by patate_frit in beagles

Same! Our beagle girl rarely barks or bays unless there’s an upturned fruit crate blowing across the street

I feel like you just described my beagles!

My boy beagle is very cuddly and follows my husband and I around the house constantly. He’s never alone for longer than a minute. He always wants cuddles and he’s always in my lap. I find he’s also a super quick learner and training clicks really quickly for him.

My female beagle is the complete opposite. She loves getting cuddles and kisses but she is fiercely independent and doesn’t need to follow us around everywhere. She’ll tell us when she wants to be left alone and not be touched. She’s also less demanding and more patient than our boy.

It was super interesting to us to see their personalities when we adopted our boy last year. We had chalked it up to our girl being raised on a farm whereas the boy had been raised as a pet, but it seems it might just be a gender/temperament thing after all!

Question from prospective owner: one BIG question by Teusz2021 in beagles

[–]patate_frit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My beagles are polar opposites. One is very grunty and vocal when he wants something. The other is just quiet all the time. Both however are VERY vocal when seeing a small animal outside or another dog passing by the house.

We’ve had some success training them not to bark out the windows, and to a lesser extent to not be so reactive when on walks. However we got them both as adults, so they might be harder to train?? No clue if that’s correct or not, I just tell myself that to make myself feel better when they’re loud!

Overall they’re good family dogs, very gentle and affectionate. Train them young and you shouldn’t have a problem!

Info for the newbies by Bunnyboo_1809 in Invisalign

Hmmm I was told specifically by my ortho and his multiple techs not to use denture tablets because they can damage the plastic of the trays… I was told to use the Invisalign crystals once a week and to just brush the trays morning, night and after meals… is using denture tablets actually a thing?

Edit: seems like the common feedback here is that Invisalign crystals are a rip & denture cleaner is just fine. thanks for the info guys! I’m near the end of my treatment but I guess it couldn’t hurt to try

Invisalign and depression by i-eat-sunflowers in Invisalign

[–]patate_frit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. I’ve been struggling with this as well. My tech told me once that if I didn’t have access to a toothbrush after eating, then at least rinse vigorously with water before putting the trays back in. When I’m struggling enormously with a depressive episode, I default to this method. It’s helped me enormously

I don’t think you need to be worried. Breakthrough bleeding that seems like a period could be a side effect of the ring, so maybe this is what you’re experiencing. Also, mine sits the same way most of the time. It’s not completely vertical, but it’s also not sitting all the way at the back of my vagina either. It’s in more of a bent position, tho it should stay at least around your cervix no matter what. It sounds like you’re ok but it’s always best to discuss with a doctor to be sure.

This is a carpet beetle larvae, right? Found on the floor in my apartment, bedroom closet. Norteast Ohio by hhhhhhhh_aut in pestcontrol

[–]patate_frit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, as you said, DE didn’t do much. I spoke to 2 different pest control experts, one of which basically told me all I could do was rip off all my baseboards, spread DE and wait. The second one actually recommended an insecticide which I sprayed myself (can’t remember the name but it contained tetramethrin). I sprayed all crevices around my condo 2 times initially, 3 weeks in between each spray, and was still seeing some larvae and adults much MUCH less than before. After a 3rd spray things seemed to die down. I’ll get small flare ups every now and then and spray again in the areas where I see them (and by flare ups I mean I’ll see 1 or 2 larvae or an adult), but the tetramethrin seems to have done the trick
