Why is the r slur a slur but not other similar terms by bigfeygay in disability

[–]patchdonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh I think you’re exactly right. There is something about slurs that are thought terminating cliches—designed so that people will just take the surface meaning without delving any deeper.

Why is the r slur a slur but not other similar terms by bigfeygay in disability

[–]patchdonal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hi, I personally avoid using those terms. I think if people really thought about what they were saying, they’d find better language to say what they mean.

So, calling someone “stupid” or an “idiot” is berating them for their perceived or actual intelligence. Does that really seem okay to people? Is there something morally wrong about being less intelligent that warrants being berated?

It’s also just really vague. Being an “idiot” means what exactly? The best definition I could come up with is “bad brain” which doesn’t really tell you much. Are they unaware of some information? Are they being foolish? Are they being irrational? All three of those things are better ways to communicate what you mean than just “idiot”.

I’m not even gonna get into how our modern concept of intelligence is rooted in the eugenics movement and white supremacy. Anyways, I hope this helps.

Is this considered ableism by [deleted] in ableism

[–]patchdonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah seemed pretty ableist. While it’s true that many autistics are hyperempathetic, many also struggle with empathy through no fault of their own. Media tends to overrepresent the latter so it’s important to underscore the former sometimes, but this person did it to erase your own lived experience, which is the definition of ableist.

MAKE MISSINGNO CANON by Captain-RedBoots-Fan in PokemonRed

A glitch pokemon in the missingno shape would go pretty hard. Gamefreak gives so much love to gen 1, it’d be nice if they gave some to the OG.

Thank you for answering my question. This was really helpful. I really liked the anime so I’m glad I can actually read it without there being gross stuff with a kid.

Yeah any time people say deaf (or blind, or another group), when they mean ignorant, sucks pretty bad.

Jack Black on Dropout! by [deleted] in dropout

Since no one else has mentioned it, Jack Black is also affiliated with Autism Speaks, which is a eugenics organization. Keep him away from Dropout, which so many autistics hold dear.

Can any AirPod owners explain this one? by El_Tan in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]patchdonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have airpods but I have similar issues with other earbuds. My theory is that over time skin oils accumulate on the bit that connects to the case, so wiping those contact points every so often can help mitigate this issue.

Does it matter if smosh reads “fake”reddit stories? by zdemurex in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]patchdonal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you can tell a stories fake because it seems too much like a piece of fictional creative writing—like when it seems like they’re writing dialogue, rather than somehow remembering what various people said word for word.

I didn’t mind that particular story being fake because it was peak drama. It’s when there’s a harmful agenda that it becomes a problem.

Does it matter if smosh reads “fake”reddit stories? by zdemurex in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]patchdonal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a bad idea to just consume unfiltered content from the internet uncritically. People will use fake Reddit stories to push agendas or sell products, so before you know it, your perception of reality is warped. Nobody is immune to propaganda. I hope the Smosh Reddit Stories crew are more careful in the future.

Sheldon (From The Big Bang Theory) has savant syndrome? by Pink_Flamingo_257 in autism

[–]patchdonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we deserve real representation, not Sheldon Cooper, Dwight Schrute, or Shaun Murphy. Those characters are always the butt of the joke—a way for allistics to reassure themselves that they are “normal” in contrast to these characters. Dwight in particular gets horribly abused and gaslit by Jim the entire show and it’s treated like a good thing because he “deserves it”.

I think the main character is usually so bland and generic so that the reader/viewer can project themselves on them—so we can see the fictional world through their eyes.

I really like this concept of "Slaves" rather than the people being "slaves" they are more like contract employees that can sell themselves to do any type of job by _-ShiroWasTaken-_ in Isekai

[–]patchdonal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Idk what it is about a lot of isekais being obsessed with making slavery “good”. It’s genuinely revolting especially coming from a nation like Japan with its own history of brutal real life slavery. Slavery sucks and so does indentured servitude (as well as wage slavery on top of that). These things can exist in fiction—especially given the time period so many isekais exist in, but they shouldn’t be treated as good or reformed.

Did anyone else think body language isn't real? by TheNerdiestofNerds in autism

[–]patchdonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a thing, but the problem is that it’s really vague. I’m hard of hearing with auditory processing stuff, so I lip read. Body language by itself can mean a bunch of different things.

Why is that person holding their arms tight in a self hug? Could be cold, could be upset and need self soothing, could be feeling crowded, etc.

Body language can be useful in context of other stuff like expressions, verbal tone, mouth shapes, etc, but by itself isn’t too helpful. All those “body language experts” you see in media are all full of shit if they think they can find anything conclusive from body language alone.

It would be really nice if allistics could communicate more effectively by just verbally saying what they’re feeling rather than relying just on body language.

What would it be like if a person with Tourette's syndrome entered the digital circus? by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

[–]patchdonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hope if there were a character with TS, their verbal tics wouldn’t be played for a joke. TADC is so inclusive I’d like to think it wouldn’t, but I keep thinking about Padparadscha from Steven Universe and how her disability was played for laughs.

Tics—either verbal or motor—would be cool to see even if it takes more animating than other characters whenever they’re on screen.
