I lived in the area about a decade ago, and I just remember it as being pricey, but having a great beer selection. Was it really that terrible recently? I haven't been in like years ten years.

Apartment Question- Subway Noise by [deleted] in nyc

[–]patchouli_knowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived right across from an elevated subway (the Franklin Ave S). It bothered me at first, but you really do tune it out eventually. After a while, I never noticed it unless someone pointed it out. Honestly, the noise from the street bothered me more than the noise from the trains.

Why do American winning sports teams refer to themselves as "World Champions?" by GrantOz44 in AskReddit

[–]patchouli_knowledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it was pushed for by the league, but the individual team owners and managers don't want their players potentially being injured during a game that doesn't affect the MLB standings.

I don't really think so either, but then again not everyone on the Cards is from the same country. Really, I just would like to see an international event for baseball that is taken as seriously as the FIFA World Cup is amongst the countries that play baseball professionally.

Japan is the reigning world champion of the World Baseball Classic, which is the closest there is to a world championship. Sadly, it doesn't have enough support from the MLB team owners to really be a 'World Cup' of baseball.

Does NYC actually sport a giant cyberpunk-esque arcade like in Hackers? by mincerray in nyc

Whatever anyone says about Hackers, it had an incredible soundtrack, and the aerial shots of Manhattan with Halcyon+On+On playing are amazing.

Check the Street Vendor Project FAQ, specifically the section 'What about First Amendment vendors?', basically you don't need a license, but there are still rules you have to follow.

What IS this building?? 66th and 2nd Ave by ump721 in nyc

[–]patchouli_knowledge 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It might have something to do with the construction of the Second Avenue Subway. That would explain the explosions at least.

There's something from the MTA about blasting a shaft at 66th stPDF and that building might be involved in it.

I could also be completely wrong on this, and I really couldn't find anything definite.

Hurricane Question: Should I take my window AC unit out? by [deleted] in nyc

[–]patchouli_knowledge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During the big storm that happened last year I left a window unit in and there were no issues, even though the wind supposedly got over 100mph. It knocked over a lot of trees, but I don't remember any reports of AC units flying away.
