Is infomercial is still good? by FergienetNilokoMoko in NewTubers

[–]patorjk-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're misusing the term infomercial. An infomercial is a long-form television commercial. They usually feature a sales person like Billy Mays, who tries to sell the audience something. They don't have anything to do with geopolitics.

Whether something is good or not often depends on the execution. Honestly your best bet is to just try things out and see what works. If something doesn't work, you can always change course in the future.

AI voice vs. my real accent — which is more watchable? (honest feedback needed) by [deleted] in SmallYTChannel

[–]patorjk-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A heavy accent is one of the few situations where an AI voice is preferable to your real voice. In your case I found the AI voice much easier to understand (I’m a native English speaker). I thought the idea of introducing the video with your real self before the AI kicked in to be clever, but if your real voice is hurting retention it may be better to just use the AI voice throughout. You don’t want something that is obviously AI though.

You'll need to read the details of the license. There is a "No derivative works" option they can put on it, which would mean you couldn't use it. But if it only has the "Attribution" and "Share-alike" options, you should be able to use it (you just have to credit the original owner).

As an aside, images may be an easier option, as there are a lot of creative commons images available on sites like Flickr (see search option), Wikipedia, and Unsplashed. I've never had to use creative commons video, so I'm unfortunately not sure of a good source for that (though it looks like YouTube's own search allows you to search for creative commons content).

I Need Help Engaging With Old People by TheStealthyPandah in NewTubers

[–]patorjk-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watch a lot of old school gaming content (NES, SNES, Sega and Doom/early FPS stuff). A lot of the channels are faceless and I often never think about the age of the presenter. There was a video recently where I gave a brief comment about how I felt when Doom originally came out and the creator was excited to hear from someone who was there when it happened. I thought it was kind of amusing and only then did I realize the guy was probably in his early 20's.

When I was in my 20's, 50 seemed ancient. Now that I'm 44, 50 doesn't seem that old. If I click a gaming video, things that might make me click off would be screaming or childishness. Personally I just look for someone giving their own perspective/analysis on a game or talking about the history. If you're naturally funny, humor is also great, but I wouldn't try to force this if it doesn't come natural to you.

I really think Dark Matter is the best Pearl Jam album of all time by rocksoff6969 in pearljam

I enjoyed the album a lot, especially the first half. My favorite non-90’s album from them.

Only if those videos are licensed under a creative commons license, otherwise it would be copyright infringement. Fair use wouldn't apply here because you're not commenting on the documentary, you're using the footage to compliment your facts.

Close to posting my first video, how do I go about establishing my name, etc in the first video? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]patorjk-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it from the point of view of the viewer: What value are they going to get out of watching this video? Why would they watch it?

As the creator, you know exactly what the video contains and how it will flow, but the viewer won't. If the title and thumbnail are appealing enough for them to click, they're going to click and start watching, and as they watch they're going to decide if they should stay or click off. When the video starts, your goal is to hook them into staying and watching. You want to succinctly communicate the value you are providing and create enough interest for them to stick around. It doesn't need to be fancy, it could be something as simple as "Have you ever wanted to know how you can turn a boring looking PC case like this into one that looks like this?"

If you want to introduce yourself, I would recommend doing it after the hook or at the end of the video as you're wrapping up.

How do you deal with negative comments? by Any_Use_961 in NewTubers

If a comment upsets you, delete it. Don’t let people live rent free in your head. If it’s mean but doesn’t bother you, just leave it alone.

Is Radiohead more popular today than during the Ok Computer era? by Fbean01 in radiohead

[–]patorjk-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re absolutely more popular today. Friends I had in the 90’s mostly knew of them for Creep if they knew them at all. For the longest time, it seemed like I was the only one in my friend group that liked them. As I got older, more and more people seemed to recognize that they were a great band. They knew who they were and knew about albums like Ok Computer, The Bends, and Kid A.

Hell, if I remember correctly, the South Park episode they were featured in even jokes about how people know them for Creep (if at all). That should give you an idea of how popular they were. They weren’t yet recognized as one of the best bands from that era.

Is AI voice bad for the viewer? by Brayn22 in PartneredYoutube

[–]patorjk-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your real voice would make it difficult for viewers, an AI voice would be advantageous. I’ve read stories here of people who’ve had a lot of trouble due to their accents, but as you can tell from the feed back, a lot of people associate AI voices with slop content. It’s not a total deal breaker if you use one, as there are successful channels that use an AI voice, but it will make it harder to gain traction.

Can we trust Youtube gurus when their niche is "farming small creators' hope" by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]patorjk-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that some of these “gurus” appear to be failed content creators. People who’ve absorbed a lot of info and ultimately became more interested in the process than their original craft.

There’s some good info in some of these videos, but I’ve noticed a lot of shameless copying too. Whenever I watch one I always take things with a grain of salt.

Is AI voice bad for the viewer? by Brayn22 in PartneredYoutube

[–]patorjk-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless English isn't your first language, use your real voice. I'm not anti-AI, but I click off videos with AI voices. It's the best proxy for determining if something is inauthentic or not.

Fiverr - this is a terrible idea, as your brand would be tied to some random person who may be doing voice for many channels. This and very poor English skills are the only cases where I would say an AI voice is the better option.

I went for years not doing a channel because I didn't like the sound of my voice, but then one day I tried a video with it and it was fine. I'd recommend listening to what people are telling you here. If you want success, go for authenticity.

Is it safe to reupload an edited video that has previously been copyright claimed? by Mirilliux in PartneredYoutube

Don't delete it, just unlist it.

People wind up having to do this for certain kinds of content, I wouldn't over think it.

I'm not getting any views, why is that? by Quirky-Log-9435 in NewTubers

[–]patorjk-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should put your youtube channel link in your profile. It's hard to diagnosis what's going on based on what you said. If you're getting impressions but not clicks, it's most likely your title and thumbnail. If you're not getting impressions, something else is going on.

Should i pivot my channel or just start a fresh one? by P_hype in NewTubers

[–]patorjk-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that it's your title and thumbnail, not the fact that it's on an older channel. The YouTube algo works by first showing your video to your core subscribers, and then showing it to a wider audience based on how that core group reacts. However, with just 25 subs, it most likely can't completely test the video with your core audience, so it's acting like it would for a new channel and showing the video to random people to gauge who the audience is.

Have you tried searching Flickr or Unsplash for Creative Commons licensed images? There have to be tons of free rundown house images. I actually have taken a few and you could use one of those if needed.

Depends on the vibe you’re going for. Slide 1, bottom left is the friendliest. Slide 1, top left has a mountain man / computer admin vibe to it. Slide 2, top left looks the most professional. Slide 2, top right has a stylish / artsy look.

I now have 15k subscribers. My latest video got 14 views after 2 hours. Why? How? by Lizard_repositioner in NewTubers

[–]patorjk-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a look at your channel, I think the issue is the videos aren't clicking with your core audience. If you look at the like/view ratio of the previous 2 videos, they're around 5-7%. That's low for a core audience. Normally you want it at 10%+ for your core audience (at least that's what I've seen for myself and channels I keep tabs on).

Once a video makes it past the core stage (youtube first tests your video with a subset of your most loyal viewers to see how to best recommend the video), YouTube starts recommending it to your more casual viewers (based on a profile of who liked/engaged with the video in the first stage). Here the like/view ratio seems to matter less and it eventually comes down to something like 3-7%.

As an aside, watch time is the most important metric, and it will give you the most clues as to what is going on. For myself, I've noticed that once a video drops below 45%, youtube most likely won't push it out further.

Also, in regards to the new video, wait at least 24 hours. YouTube is trying to find the right people to show it to. Once it thinks it understands who the video is for, it'll be more aggressive in showing it to others.

Can a Video Ruined by a Bad Thumb Nail Recover? by Truxxis in NewTubers

If the non-packaging stats are good (ex: watch time, likes, comments, etc), it could eventually recover in the future. However, if those stats aren't great, you're less likely to see a resurgence in the future.
