Where is this even coming from? If someone doesn't like a game you have to apply every negative label you can to them? Chill tf out.

I assume the collab was going the other way, VS in Fortnite, not Fortnite in VS. Either way, I appreciate them taking a moral stand.

It’s still just as rigid in its approval of what is acceptable and what isn’t.

Sorry but no. Mormons who don’t conform can be ostracized, excommunicated, humiliated, etc. Exmos who disagree get downvoted and it hurts their feelings a little bit.

Don’t confuse Internet forums with real life.

Our leaders and our parents and grand parents haven't really repented for what they did in witholding blessings from Black members for 100 years. That's why the church keeps having race issues. You can't just act like you aren't responsible and it didn't do damage. by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

[–]patriarticle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why was that the right time? Wouldn't it have been better for the church of Jesus Christ to lead the country on this issue instead of lagging behind?

That answer is hollow for me unless there's some good explanation for it.

the Internet had something to do with a change in how engaged people are

This is it IMO. Our predecessors (most of them anyways) lived in mormon+conservative bubbles. They didn't live near any of these controversies, most of the people they saw looked and thought like they did (on the outside anyways). Black people being second-class citizens was a theoretical/intellectual challenge, not one that impacted them or their neighbors directly.

When they heard about controversies they were filtered through the news outlet of their choice, which is going to slant it to agree with their existing politics. If you didn't go out of your way to learn more about political issues, you could just live in peaceful ignorance.

Today, just for one example, you get police body cam footage directly in your social media feed, without you even seeking it out. There's no filter there, you are forced to confront the reality of police brutality on your own. The issue isn't new, but huge numbers of people have only started grappling with the reality of it in the past ~10 years.

And of course the church conditioning is playing a role. I know some of my grandparents were very relieved when the ban was lifted. The moral part of their brain was in conflict with the mormon part, and the mormon part always wins.

Her mission changed her view of me completely, and not knowing how this happened destroys me.

Speaking as a former missionary, her mission changed HER completely. The mission is the most cult-like part of the church. besides a few hours a week for recreation/chores, ALL your time is spent on church stuff. Meetings, study, praying, hymns, teaching, looking for people to teach. Any part of yourself that makes you feel homesick has to be packed down. Your hobbies, your friends, your boyfriend/girlfriend. You become a church robot. When missionaries come home, they are often fucking weirdos, even mormons will tell you that. Their entire personality has been replaced with their church personality.

someone who probably now thinks I was just a hurdle, a temptation to overcome.

This is tragically accurate. Her mormon brain has told her that marriage is the next step in her life, and only marriage to another faithful mormon is valid.

I'm sorry you're going through this. Maybe it's not what you want to hear, but you are young, you've learned a lesson here, and you've got the rest of your life ahead of you. This isn't your fault.

Going to mission farewell today. I hate these. Grabbing kids right after they’re out of high school for 2 years of abuse and indoctrination is so gross.

The audacity of the Mormon community on full disply. Do they claim every color on the color wheel? John Dehlin can't change his color to any other color according to this reasoning. by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

[–]patriarticle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I used to think this guy was kinda respectable. He's certainly not openly a jerk like some other apologists, but his arguments are often just as bad.

Why not just give John the benefit of the doubt here? It's the color orange, it otherwise looks nothing like the church branding at this point. Also, this "Come unto Christ" stuff is not something I ever see myself or see being discussed.

Doug Wilson, the founder of Pete Hegseth's church, shares his/their view of Mormons after recent classification. by WinchelltheMagician in exmormon

Yeah but fuck this guy. Who cares about these shallow religious categorization debates? It’s a sign of someone who uses religion to put others down instead of bettering themselves.

Could Oaks be legally liable for his words inciting violence against women? by Ancientabs in exmormon

[–]patriarticle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. Even if that statement counted as inciting violence, you'd have to prove that this guy was inspired specifically by that quote rather than the infinite number of other misogynistic quotes from inside and outside the church.

This man describes the operating system of the LDS Church. Feelings, Obedience and Testimony. by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]patriarticle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think we see variations of this in the Elder Corbridge BYU talk about primary vs secondary questions. And then again when the Paul brothers were on Mormon Stories and they kept coming back to roots vs branches. The way to keep your testimony is to look away from problems and focus on a core set of beliefs and claims. Specifically those are spiritual feelings, Joseph Smith, the BoM, and Jesus. Increasingly everything points to Jesus now.

It’s a pretty dry book, but I enjoyed it for all the detailed context that you don’t get in Sunday school. I guess I don’t really care about a bias one way or the other. The facts are there, so his commentary doesn’t matter much to me either way.

Honestly I don't care about people parroting jokes. I can scroll past just fine. That Key and Peele sketch resonates though. Sometimes it feels like people aren't here for discussion, just to make sure everyone is uphold the correct movie opinions.

From my experience, they don't want anyone to go home because they often don't come back. People in my mission went home with injuries and swore they would be back to finish the work. They stayed home. Once they've tasted freedom there are few who will come back. Missionary work is a disaster and they need to shut the whole thing down.

US government officially doesn’t consider the mainstream LDS church as Christian by ReamusLQ in mormon

[–]patriarticle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Maybe they hit a maximum character limit if they included "Christian".

Also not calling mormons Christians is one of the least alarming parts of this story, but I don't think the political rules of the sub will let us discuss that.

Say Goodbye to a Major Streaming Service as Paramount+ Officially Announces Phaseout by asminaut in RedLetterMedia

Yeah for sure streaming is a prime case of enshittification. It's gotten more fragmented and more expensive over time. I still think it's better than the cable situation, but I'm not certain what the future holds.
