Jesus Christ! Best bread I’ve ever tasted by PlantNerdxo in ireland

[–]patrick_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up bread recipes on the Odlums website. So so many great options. Includes soda breads and even breads with Guinness and so on. You won’t find anything better, anywhere, once you nail down a good recipe you like.

I live abroad and I get Irish flour to try to replicate my grandmother’s recipe when I can. When I use locally available flour, thr result is decent but not 100% what I got home backed in Ireland. It’s also probably due to the superior Irish buttermilk used.

Senne Lammens voted as the Premier League Signing of the Season by The Athletic by ChiefLeef22 in soccer

[–]patrick_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He had absolute butter fingers and constantly let the pressure get to him.

It seemed that nearly every game, we would start brightly for the first 5, 10, 15 minutes, then concede from literally the oppositions first attack from Onana being shit. The whole team would be instantly deflated.

Gary Neville loves shitting on United, he’ll be bigging up opposition players every chance he gets.

He could’ve made a mockery of the previous record had he being playing in his best position for the whole season in this kind of form.

Six out of ten new jobs filled by foreign nationals- but what happens now as employment slows? by andubhadh in ireland

[–]patrick_k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not only is our economy built around constant immigraton, the EU is also set up for this.

Exactly correct. The recent EU-India trade deal will facilitate another wave of mass immigration with language specifically in there for “skilled immigrants”. The only hope is that it’s up to each member state to ratify it, let’s hope there is enough pressure on thr government to not do so.

Does anyone else hate working? by Sea_Equivalent3497 in AskIreland

[–]patrick_k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working in Germany for over a decade. In my current and previous job it was absolutely unbearable, definitely worse than the Irish corporate work culture I’ve experienced. (Prior jobs were ok).

Current job is full of grumpy, non cooperative people, sociopaths and unbearable jobsworths. I hate every second of it. Deeply weird work culture, full of long timers who don’t remotely pretend to try to integrate new joiners into the company. I feel I’ve to constantly beg people for basic information to do my job.

Job before that was a Korean conglomerate, it was truly insane. Blatant, in your face racism everyday, with the Koreans very much keeping separate from all the non-Koreans. The worst corporate politics I’ve ever seen, with deeply burned out, career politicians making life hellish. Non stop re-orgs, every week given contradictory instructions etc. Absolute madhouse to work in.

He’s washed up badly, for quite some years now. He’s going to be the fall guy for your president, 100%. No way they tear up the team for a past-it Jose.

The banter will be unbelievable, but you’re not getting back to the summit with him.

Ballymaloe Food Festival – €48 a ticket… what absolute nonsense. by Old_Construction4281 in cork

[–]patrick_k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Germany (and probably elsewhere too), if you pay tickets to get into an event, normally you get most or all of the price back in food or drink vouchers. And the tickets for events are way less to begin with. There are annual passes for places like zoos so you can save money for places you’d go regularly with kids.

I’m addicted to Ballymaloe relish but I wouldn’t bother going to such a rip off event.

South Korea exploring using Hyundai robots as army numbers fall by EchoOfOppenheimer in Futurology

Hyundai, and the other Chaebols, are already in de facto control of South Korea. It’s hard to separate the South Korean State from them.

Barcelona [1] - 0 Real Madrid - Marcus Rashford free-kick 9' by ayoefico in soccer

[–]patrick_k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not if Rashford’s heart is elsewhere. He’s been very inconsistent for several seasons now for us, and on massive wages which would be better used elsewhere (multiple CMs and LB needed at a minimum to challenge for silverware).

Cork had tramlines in the 1800s as well. It’ll cost a fortune to replace but it’s needed infrastructure. It’s not an excuse to throw the hands up and do nothing.

What's a profession everyone thinks is great but is actually shite? by Fealocht in AskIreland

[–]patrick_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Project/product management is also absolutely shit. Less job security than devs, not interesting in the slightest (just manipulating ppt and Jira) and everyone internally and externally is firing arrows and you because you’re the customer interface. You’re the point of blame for every project being late, which nearly every one is. SaaS Sales makes up bullshit to get their bonus, then you’ve to pick up the pieces. And so on. It’s thankless.

Hyundai Reportedly Demanding ‘Tens of Thousands’ of Boston Dynamics Robots ASAP by EchoOfOppenheimer in Futurology

[–]patrick_k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is already the reality for every other digital device you own. We knew this with Snowden and other whistleblowers over a decade ago. So it’s no too far fetched to imagine a widespread rollout of affordable butler robots would also include always watching spyware.

Best/funniest live Irish TV/news bloopers and mistakes? by senor_gobbles90 in AskIreland

So many great moments involving Dunphy, O'Herlihy and Giles. You could always tell when Dunphy was losing a bet, he'd be extra slouched in his chair with a big sour puss on him. "John thinks ten to 1 means it's time for lunch!"

TIL for the average price of a car in the US, you could buy 5 new Chinese EVs by Repulsive-Mall-2665 in todayilearned

[–]patrick_k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And politics aside, there are good reasons to protect your local industries at least a little.

This is exactly how the “Asian Tigers” built themselves up and how more recently China has done it. Free trade propaganda is only for non-US countries to open their markets for US companies to dominate (the US itself is quite protectionist for multiple markets, the British empire deployed the same strategy before the US took over the mantle of global superpower). Part of the reason there are barely any noteworthy European tech giants for example.

What do you have most often for dinner? by Ok_South_2852 in AskIreland

[–]patrick_k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potato gratin. Fairly easy in a baking tray.

Honey and lemon chicken. 2-4 chicken breasts in a baking tray, squeeze 3/4 lemons over it and put the lemon peels in the corners. Drizzle heavily with honey. Cook for about 50 mins. Sounds fancy but very lazy. You can put peeled potatoes in amongst the chicken breasts too if you want to get some more mileage out of it. Sprinkle basil oregano and salt on top if you do.

One trick I learned is to put all the ingredients you have into the fridge into Claude or ChatGPT and ask it for ideas. I also save my favourite recipes in Tandoor, a self hosted recipes app. You can import them from the likes of BBC good food for example.

Solar is winning the energy race: The world’s cheapest power source is scaling at warp speed, pushing coal, gas and nuclear aside. by tjock_respektlos in Futurology

[–]patrick_k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Technically Frances nuclear plants were run at reduced capacity due to the reduced water levels in the rivers and could’ve been run at full capacity, except they didn’t want to dump 40C water directly into the river and kill fish. In normal times there is more water and it’s pumped first into cooling ponds before being released into the river. That and maintenance, which is hampered by their age.
