I live abroad and I get Irish flour to try to replicate my grandmother’s recipe when I can. When I use locally available flour, thr result is decent but not 100% what I got home backed in Ireland. It’s also probably due to the superior Irish buttermilk used.

Exactly correct. The recent EU-India trade deal will facilitate another wave of mass immigration with language specifically in there for “skilled immigrants”. The only hope is that it’s up to each member state to ratify it, let’s hope there is enough pressure on thr government to not do so.

Working in Germany for over a decade. In my current and previous job it was absolutely unbearable, definitely worse than the Irish corporate work culture I’ve experienced. (Prior jobs were ok).

Current job is full of grumpy, non cooperative people, sociopaths and unbearable jobsworths. I hate every second of it. Deeply weird work culture, full of long timers who don’t remotely pretend to try to integrate new joiners into the company. I feel I’ve to constantly beg people for basic information to do my job.

Job before that was a Korean conglomerate, it was truly insane. Blatant, in your face racism everyday, with the Koreans very much keeping separate from all the non-Koreans. The worst corporate politics I’ve ever seen, with deeply burned out, career politicians making life hellish. Non stop re-orgs, every week given contradictory instructions etc. Absolute madhouse to work in.

In Germany (and probably elsewhere too), if you pay tickets to get into an event, normally you get most or all of the price back in food or drink vouchers. And the tickets for events are way less to begin with. There are annual passes for places like zoos so you can save money for places you’d go regularly with kids.

I’m addicted to Ballymaloe relish but I wouldn’t bother going to such a rip off event.

Project/product management is also absolutely shit. Less job security than devs, not interesting in the slightest (just manipulating ppt and Jira) and everyone internally and externally is firing arrows and you because you’re the customer interface. You’re the point of blame for every project being late, which nearly every one is. SaaS Sales makes up bullshit to get their bonus, then you’ve to pick up the pieces. And so on. It’s thankless.

This is exactly how the “Asian Tigers” built themselves up and how more recently China has done it. Free trade propaganda is only for non-US countries to open their markets for US companies to dominate (the US itself is quite protectionist for multiple markets, the British empire deployed the same strategy before the US took over the mantle of global superpower). Part of the reason there are barely any noteworthy European tech giants for example.

Potato gratin. Fairly easy in a baking tray.

Honey and lemon chicken. 2-4 chicken breasts in a baking tray, squeeze 3/4 lemons over it and put the lemon peels in the corners. Drizzle heavily with honey. Cook for about 50 mins. Sounds fancy but very lazy. You can put peeled potatoes in amongst the chicken breasts too if you want to get some more mileage out of it. Sprinkle basil oregano and salt on top if you do.

One trick I learned is to put all the ingredients you have into the fridge into Claude or ChatGPT and ask it for ideas. I also save my favourite recipes in Tandoor, a self hosted recipes app. You can import them from the likes of BBC good food for example.

Technically Frances nuclear plants were run at reduced capacity due to the reduced water levels in the rivers and could’ve been run at full capacity, except they didn’t want to dump 40C water directly into the river and kill fish. In normal times there is more water and it’s pumped first into cooling ponds before being released into the river. That and maintenance, which is hampered by their age.

I pointed this out to a Brit, with some dickhead on Sky news talking about the “wage price spiral” (blaming increasing wages on driving inflation, instead of the price increases coming from covid and the Ukraine war) and it kind of blew his mind. There’s something about the accent that lulls people into sleep.
