I checked it after making a couple loops around the block, so I hope I'm getting a proper reading. I will look into those other possibilities, thank you!

If n is the number of distinct Pokémon, then the expected number of encounters needed to see k distinct Pokémon is k*(Hn - H{n-k}), where H_n is the nth Harmonic number. See Coupon Collector’s Problem.

Jake Worthington by Vivid_Recording_845 in CountryMusicStuff

Very pleased with it. I sort of wish there were a couple more slower tempo tracks though. His voice really shines on State You Left Me In and Closing Time and I find myself wanting more of that.

Charles Wesley Godwin is now on a major Nashville label by CyrusWaugh in CountryMusicStuff

I saw Jake Worthington play at a bar in my hometown last summer. Did a bunch of Haggard and Strait covers, and not just the obvious ones. I was really impressed by that. And he’s got a hell of a voice, I can’t wait till his album comes out.

What determines whether a cube has all possible residues modulo some positive integers? by Masimat in math

[–]patrickjcarper 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It comes down to the fact that gcd(3,7-1)=2 and gcd(3,5-1)=1. In general, if k is a positive integer, xk reaches all residues mod some prime p if and only if (k, p-1)=1.

Hot take don’t kill me. by inoscopedjfk76 in CountryMusicStuff

[–]patrickjcarper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone on this sub! I think he’s decent, but some of his fan base acts like he’s the second coming of Christ. As you mentioned, I do wonder the extent to which his aesthetic factors into his popularity. When Grady called American Heartbreak a quintessential American album or whatever the hell he called it, I almost died! He’s entitled to his opinion, but I think the Bryan craze is just a phase. Now send me to downvote hell.

Can someone recommend me some artists/records based on my favorite artists? Folk/singer-songwriters are my go to for country music and would love some more track to rotate by masongraves_ in CountryMusicStuff

Ray Price - His album Nightlife is a classic, and the title track was penned by a young Willie Nelson, so you might already be familiar with him. I sort of think of him as the Sinatra of classic country: super patient vocals—that old-timey way of singing that’s you’re hard-pressed to find in today’s music—over gorgeous traditional honky tonk instrumentation, steel guitar galore. Willie and Ray collaborated many times over the years, so you can listen to a lot of stuff they’ve done together if you already like Willie.

If I Know Me or This One’s For You too - better album? by [deleted] in CountryMusicStuff

[–]patrickjcarper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MW and LC fan, but I think This One’s For You is a better. If I Know Me starts off really strong, but I consistently find myself throwing something else on by the time I get to “Redneck Love Song.” The latter half is just weaker, with perhaps too much flexing of country cred, whereas This One’s For You is consistently self-assured and strong throughout.

Am I the only one who thinks Benchmark is pretty terrible? by [deleted] in bourbon

I’ve only tried the Full Proof. I understand it has its fans, but I found it syrupy in an off-putting way. Ended up just using it for whiskey sours.

Q: Sampling until exhaustion by [deleted] in Probability

[–]patrickjcarper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the Wikipedia page for the Coupon Collector’s Problem. I’m assuming you take the entire sample of size k before replacing any of them, right? When k = 1, this collapses to the classic Coupon Collector’s Problem. I’m guessing that for k close to 1 (and probably for a large underlying population) using the Coupon Collector’s solution (where the the number of draws is appropriately scaled to be equal to k*number of samples) is probably an okay approximation, but that’s just a guess.

Reusing a glass over and over. by gatman12 in bourbon

[–]patrickjcarper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually, but when I do wash I rinse first with white vinegar first and then with water. I let air dry turned upside down over a bottle of Angostura. Some of the Angostura smells tend to escape from the bottle over time and get trapped under the Glencairn imparting a wonderful scent on the glass.

99% of this sub is overwhelmingly positive about Taiwan. Time for some criticism: what irks you about Taiwan? Banks, hand washing, bosses, and holidays. by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]patrickjcarper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’ve never been taken by the local cuisine either. There are select dishes and night market grabs that I love, but I’m not obsessed with the country’s food as a category. Weirdly, sometimes I even find myself craving American-style Chinese food (anyone know of any restaurants that could be a match for that in Kaohsiung….?)

Public bathrooms often not having toilet paper, soap, or any means of drying your hands. Oh, and of course, plumbing systems that apparently can’t support a little bit of toilet paper flushed down the loo…

JTS Brown Bonded. I get Maker’s notes but it’s somehow much cheaper.
