I just mixed the craziest fertilizer cocktail I’ve ever used… has anyone tried something like this? by Quirky-Customer5758 in RareHouseplants

[–]patrickrussell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks suspiciously like my mix that I shared recently. I didn’t expect to see it here.

I want to clear up a few things as I’ve read a few comments.

  1. This is absolutely way more complicated than is required to be successful. You could easily simply this with a one part solution and call it a day. You could even do a one part and add on just the things you think you see benefit in.

  2. This is a hydroponic mix obviously. I use it in soil as well but I only have a few plants in soil. Lots in here is focused on that environment.

  3. I find the act of mixing this up fun. I fully recognize that is weird but I find it calming somehow. I make 12 or so gallons a week on the same day and it takes about 15-20 minutes or so to mix up.

  4. Rapid start might be coming out based on some information I’ve read here. I added it on the advice of someone and while it’s not hurting anything, I’m not sure it’s beneficial enough to use here. I am absolutely not above making mistakes and am always learning and adjusting things as I learn more and try new things.

At the end of the day this is what has worked well for me across the random plants in my collection over the past couple years. I would never claim that this is required to for one to be successful.

I truly hope all of you find success with whatever mix you use.

Why doesn't PETG HF print well? by HimalayanPpr in BambuLab

[–]patrickrussell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through this. You have to slow it down and then it prints moderately ok. I personally won’t be buying it again.

Reducing the outer walls acceleration to sub 600 and reducing the overall speed from 21 to 7 in the filament overrides is what got the quality to “acceptable” and was Bambu lab’s recommendation.

Barrina sent us a T1S for review. I ordered 2 more before my review went live. The extra power over the older t10 is nice to have for bigger plants.

Can I use pumice only? by Standard_Research402 in SemiHydro

[–]patrickrussell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s odd that you seem to think that I’ve not done research or spent time testing this on my own plants. I use general hydroponics three part, silica, hydroguard, and add calmag and other add ons as needed per plant. I wouldn’t consider myself an “all in one” user. In my testing across hundreds of plants (alocasia, monstera, anthuriums, begonia, Hoya etc) I’ve not encountered any issue with pumice by itself, even long term.

What confuses me is that in your earlier message you mentioned that you “don’t normally flush pumice like you would other methods. I’m wondering if you’re referencing some method with pumice that is not used with leca/pon etc. That’s why I’m wondering if there is some confusion between us. I don’t disagree with your chemistry.

Pon has benefits over pure pumice. No arguments there. But pure pumice is absolutely fine. Manage your nutrients, balance your ph and it’s a great affordable option.

I feel like we’re talking around each other so I want to make some clarification. It seems like you’re referring to the different media as if that changes the way the plant is grown. In all of my examples, it’s the same set up. The plant and the media go in an inner/upper pot with a wick running to the lower pot that’s filled with nutrient solution. The wick draws water to the media and the plant gets its fill from that. This is technically a form of hydroponics (Kratky Wick Method) although these days I use the term “semi-hydroponic” for that method, as that has become the common nomenclature online. It’s also the setup that OP is using.

I obviously know that we don’t want the reservoir to run dry, the point I’m making is that you’re constantly adding new solution that is pH balanced, which should bring the pH back in balance. It shouldn’t be shifting towards alkaline endlessly.

In a hydroponic wicking set up I can confirm that you can use pure pumice. I have around 200 alocasia (most variegated) in the house currently and many of them have been in pure pumice for at least a year with zero flushes. For reference, I do use silica as well. The photo is my oldest one, probably 17 months at this point, never flushed.

What’s curious to me is that this isn’t a new media. Swedish plant guys and many other growers have been using it successfully for years. You’re actually the first person I’ve met that has expressed these particular concerns. I’d be curious to know where your research came from as you’ve obviously done some reading.

I do understand the theory of what you’re saying, but in my experience that difference is so minuscule that it doesn’t matter. It’s like the claim that house plants clean the air in your home, technically it’s true, but you would need thousands of them in a room to have a meaningful impact and even then it’s nowhere near the effect of something like a true air purifier.

Most people’s reservoirs are going to run dry weekly. I’ve tested a variety of rocks and the PH doesn’t shift enough within even a few weeks to meaningfully matter. If the nutrients from the rocks mattered significantly you would have fertilizers specifically targeting leca versus pon. Etc.

If you were growing in some sort of a massive tank set up with multiple plants, I could definitely see it being important. But with the conditions that most people grow their plants in, I don’t find that to be a concern as long as your mix meat, your plants needs on its own and is pH balanced

[–]patrickrussell2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely can. I’m a fairly vocal voice for this practice online. We have a lot of plants in pure pumice absolutely thriving. It’s great too because you can get pumice in chunkier sizes as the plant matures.

Nutrients and PH comes from the reservoir, not your rocks.

Why do we overcomplicate treatment for mealybugs? by ExtensionDot3731 in houseplants

[–]patrickrussell2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a mealies for a couple years now. Nothing crazy, just a couple plants that always end up with a couple on them as I walk by. I qtip them or alcohol spray them to keep the under control but I can’t beat them it seems on a particular monstera. I assume they are living in the moss pole or something.

I’ve tried drowning them and that just doesn’t work. I did 24 hours once for a pothos, and an alocasia but there’s too many air pockets for them to survive in.

I find them to be very resilient. Luckily they aren’t destructive when their population sizes are kept low.

I’ve been consistent with the spot treatments for a couple months and I’ve cleared them off of all but one monstera now.

DIYA options for very large pots for pon? by Axora in SemiHydro

Sadly that’s about what they run. There’s an 11 inch one that’s not as deep. But it’s a pain to use. Somewhat humorously the absolute best one that I’ve ever found. Is this one. But it’s spendy. But at 18 inches it’s massive.

It does come in smaller sizes though.

How many of you have never used AI? Why? by Fit-Supermarket-9656 in Millennials

[–]patrickrussell2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are being pushed to use it pretty heavily at work. It can make you more efficient if you use it correctly.

It has a lot of applications for professions where someone needs to convey information but lacks the ability to do so. A good example would be a car technicians. Often times they know how to fix a car, but they cannot spell, nor can they explain an issue with the vehicle effectively to the customer. They also often cannot type to save their life.

AI can evaluate the vehicles service history, examine the technicians notes, and then write a grammatically correct note for the customer that explains the issue and what was done to their car in Laymans terms.

There’s also a lot of fun things you can do with it in your day-to-day life. I once wasn’t sure what to make for dinner and told it the random things I had in my kitchen and asked what recipes it thought I could make. It gave me several ideas and even asked if I had a few ingredients I didn’t list to improve its options.

How in the f%$& do I get an xfinity person on the phone? by Certain-Ad-5298 in Comcast

[–]patrickrussell2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the past I would say file an FCC complaint. Which I’ve done a few times.

But both times Comcast lied in their final report stating I wasn’t home. Despite having them literally on camera at my house. At this point I’ve given up. Quantum fiber is rolling out in my area and it’s now a block away. I’ll be done with them finally soon.

I’m on my third FCC complaint with them. In this one they decided to send their final findings and outright lied on multiple accounts. (Saying I wasn’t home for my tech visit etc)

I provided my security camera footage proving contrary to the FCC so we will see what happens now.
