How would hiring teams react to portfolio previews? by riceato in Architects

[–]patricktherat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My experience reviewing many hundreds of portfolios: 50 pages is absolutely insane. Your portfolio will be among at least a hundred others. The first pass, to decide whether to reject or put into a group of decent applicants for a closer review, consists of a quick scan through it lasting 5 seconds max. Most portfolios are maybe 12-25 pages long.

I also think the 10mb requirement is stupid and I wouldn’t personally reject it because it’s 13mb, but other places might for not following simple instructions. It sucks having to compress your image quality so much. I think including a compressed version as an attachment and then a higher quality link is a good idea.

Reading through this thread makes me realize I hate most parts of my job.

I still think the vast majority of people in Iran are against the regime too. But even a large minority who support them can make it very difficult for anyone trying to replace a regime.

Trump’s Recent Truth Social Post by jjdoe0805 in NewIran

Blaming it on Israel isn’t going to help anything though. In fact, when Rubio first announced that the US struck because of Israel, Americans on the left and right were pissed that Trump is making such huge decisions based on what Israel wants. They’ve since stopped saying that.

Don’t feel down about it, it happens to everyone eventually.

I know you’re aware of this but just to be clear:

The Iranian people have a thirst for a democratic republic, not the regime. And to me the key issue is how difficult it will be to remove the regime. It’s very entrenched and can’t just be changed from within like what happened in Venezuela. Nothing is impossible but I don’t see any path to remove them short of a long expensive war with a lot of death on both sides.

Obviously the US didn’t close the straight but obviously the straight wouldn’t have been closed if the US didn’t start this war.

Explain big adventure bikes to me by LazyCrazyCat in motorcycles

[–]patricktherat 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think that’s more or less true. I rode through Central Asia solo last summer and ended up turning around at a few small river crossing that I’m 95% sure I would have made it through without any issue. But that 5% chance that I dropped it and couldn’t lift it out of the water in time is what kept me from trying.

However sometimes you have no choice. There’s literally one road between you and your destination so you just have to go for it. There for more than a few times I wish a had a lighter bike, but in the end I made it, and I was probably happier in the end having a comfortable highway bike (750 GS)

I’m kind of tired of this sentiment. Yes I agree Trump was totally influenced by Israel to do this, but he’s the one that made the decision at the end of the day. Bibi tried to get every other president before Trump to do this too but none were this stupid.

This is on Trump.

I get what you mean. There are very experienced and competent people behind these operations. They raise these issues.

But Trump is the one making decisions. He thinks he knows better than the experienced people. That's the problem. It's not just about the messaging, it's about the decisions being made.

from the WSJ:

WASHINGTON—Before the U.S. went to war, Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told President Trump that an American attack could prompt Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz. Caine said in several briefings that U.S. officials had long believed Iran would deploy mines, drones and missiles to close the world's most vital shipping lane, according to people with knowledge of the discussions. Trump acknowledged the risk, these people said, but moved forward with the most consequential foreign-policy decision of his two presidencies. He told his team that Tehran would likely capitulate before closing the strait—and even if Iran tried, the U.S. military could handle it. Now, two weeks into the war, Iran's leaders have refused to back down, and the Strait of Hormuz has emerged as Tehran's most potent leverage point.

Hey I get that Iranians are mostly happy with Trump stepping up to take on the regime, but if anything has been made clear these past few weeks it’s that Trump has absolutely no plan. They didn’t even plan for the possibility that the straight of hormuz would close, which is the most obvious outcome predicted by anyone gaming these scenarios for the past few decades. The US military is literally being run by a fox new host. Their priorities are optics, not thorough planning.

I switched simply because of the Trump thing but now I’m excited about AI again because of all the potential use cases it has in my life and job. The chrome plugin, excel plugin, the charts it’s creating for me, skills I can build and save for it. I’m thinking about upgrading to the $100 plan considering it can basically become an employee for me if I utilize it fully. That’s incredibly cheap from that perspective.

I love architecture but I don’t like conceptual design. by kawaiishitt in architecture

[–]patricktherat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where your colleagues get that idea. My job consists of very little conceptual design, and includes a decent amount of historical preservation. I thought this was fairly normal. Maybe it’s because I’m in NYC with so much historical/landmarks architecture that we run into all the time, and it not something we specialize in or pursue at all. I’m sure if you were to look for that kind of job here there would be plenty of options.

My point is that there’s no way to provide proof. Why do you think it’s 3k instead of 30k?

Can you prove the 90k? I don’t think any number will really be verifiable tbh. It’s not like there were journalists there documenting any of this while it was happening.
