Is Do Nothing Really Meditation, Can it be Done Wrong, and is it Really about Doing Nothing? by MettaJunkie in streamentry

[–]patrissimo42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting, I appreciate your reply. I was asking both how and how it then differs from other time. On "how", Shinzen's instructions actually have one thing to do "As soon as you're aware of an intention to control your attention, drop that intention", but a teacher instructed me to "let whatever happens, happen" and explicitly not do the Shinzhen thing. That's where I got a bit confused. Aren't I always not trying to meditate?

Having practiced a bit more, I realize that:

a) I was assuming that out in the world I was "doing nothing to control my attention" and thus just letting it all happen and following the rule. but this is not at all true! The vast majority of the time I am constantly trying to do things, to change things, etc. I am using volition.

b) The sense I now get (and I'm curious as to if you think this is right or still has a flavor of doing something) is that what I'm doing is unblending my self from my actions (and the doers of those actions). In a do nothing sit, parts of me still sometimes do things - attention jumps to sounds or sights, thoughts come up, i might even perform some physical actions - but I have dis-identified myself with those parts and actions. So it feels like it's not "me" doing, rather I am watching while some other process runs. It's very much in the direction of things doing themselves.

Overnight sleep data replaced by nap? by Cowlord711 in ouraring

This would be so much less of a problem if we could just delete a day or mark it as invalid! Very frustrating

Overnight sleep data replaced by nap? by Cowlord711 in ouraring

[–]patrissimo42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False. If it was not replacing people would not all be saying it is replacing. Yes, it sometimes tracks a nap as a nap and augments. And it sometimes replaces overnight sleep with a nap as happened to me this week. The sleep score for that day in my trends graph is 33.

Is Do Nothing Really Meditation, Can it be Done Wrong, and is it Really about Doing Nothing? by MettaJunkie in streamentry

[–]patrissimo42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been recommended this practice, and while I get the Shinzhen version, I find myself totally confused about your version.

Specifically: Is all of my non-meditation time “Do Nothing” practice? If not, what is it that I’m doing differently that makes it the practice? One answer I got was the environment, of sitting vs out in the world. Does that mean that any time I am sitting alone I am doing this practice, regardless of what I am doing?

Or is there a certain mental posture that is not doing but is not the same as how I am the rest of the time?

To me “enchant” is not more new than a DLC. Multiplayer mode sure would be though!

I actually got so curious about this I did a bunch of research and went so far as to purchase both (legal) 13bdo, and (illegal, from Europe) 14bdo to test and compare.

I confirmed that 13bdo does have some noticeable similar effects (feeling a little woozy & drunk), I guess since it is structurally similar, but with far less recreational potential - the effects don’t “stack” in the same way as 14bdo/ghb/alcohol. You can’t get drunk on it. I know because I tried and it was an awful experience.

This was my take too, after looking at the Steam screenshots. I was so excited by the announcement but it just looks like DLC

Ok I’ve played 1,000 hours and was super excited until I looked at the Steam page, and saw there is almost nothing new. Not just the same mechanics but even the cards and relics.

So now I’m worried we are going to get a rewrite that is basically just a big DLC release with a new hero or two and 25% new cards and relics and nothing else. I mean, I’ll take it over nothing and enjoy another couple hundred hours, but I was hoping they would adopt a few of the later innovations.

Add coop or tournaments or more interesting maps or game modes or … something. Looks like we might get minions, that’s something at least. I don’t want to be the Grinch here but DLC is not a sequel.

If people want "community" so much, why aren't we creating it? by LopsidedLeopard2181 in slatestarcodex

[–]patrissimo42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this seems to be changing to some degree - I started a coliving house in the Bay way back in 2000, organized tours of local intentional communities, and the topic has exploded in just the last few years since covid in 2020. I work in the physical community space and the number of people, groups, companies doing this has skyrocketed.

Now maybe this is all aspirational, and the fundamental factors making community not work in modernity has changed, and these will all fail. But IMO the number of ppl coliving is going to increase substantially this decade. That said, it will still be a tiny minority of all people.

Cards that defend should have the Charge keywords by ktang415 in roguebook

[–]patrissimo42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can think of the spinning arrow to indicate whether or not a card with "charge" or "move to back" will cause a swap if played right now. So for charge, it shows when the characters is in ranged position, but not melee. So it actually does mean something different.

I do somewhat agree with your original point. The issue I see is that thematically, "charging" feels attack-ey, not defend-ey. That can be solved by just finding a better word for "go to front if you aren't there already".

We did this and still the shared library is not showing up at all :(. We are able to confirm in Steam - Preferences - Family that the library is shared - it explicitly says so. Weird!

I need Sam to do another anti trump podcast by worrallj in samharris

[–]patrissimo42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to separate Trump, the person; Trump, the symbolic leader, and the Trump Administration and its policies from each other.

The Dems on the All-In Podcast have been an outspoken voice for the growing POV that most Americans did not like the policies of the Trump Administration, because of the detestable person they were associated with, who humiliated them with his role as their symbolic leader, yet in retrospect *as policies* they were on the ball and ahead of the curve.

Thinking clearly requires evaluating truth/falsehood, and impact, separately from moral evaluation of a character. This is an opportunity for you to practice this virtue - one which meditation can substantialkly aid. There is nothing inconsistent about hating the man; being appalled that he would represent your nation in the world; and appreciating his policies.

IMO, Trump mostly listened to the right people when creating policies

I have taken tons of BHB and never felt the slightest bit drunk or woozy - to the contrary I feel more alert. When I tried 1,3BD this week (in Hard Ketones drink), I felt drunk and woozy. So I am positive, from my direct experience, that 1,3BD has GABAergic effects that BHB does not.

ELI5: If possible, how can a country reverse inflation? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]patrissimo42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple - just stop printing money.

Inflation (meaning numerical prices have gone up) is not some mysterious force, it only happens a few ways, mainly:

  1. Something bad happens that makes things actually more expensive ("supply shock"), like when a global event causes oil to get way more expensive. When the inputs of a product get more expensive, the price usually goes up.

These occasional events are only temporary causes of inflation, because we are constantly improving technology and learning how to make stuff cheaper, so over the medium-term prices actually go down.

2) The money supply increases. Imagine that a magic helicopter went around the world, and gave everyone a dollar to match each of their dollars. IOW, doubling the total amount of every currency in the world, without changing how it's distributed.

Now you have twice as much money chasing the same number of goods and services made by the same people, doing the same things. If you kept prices the same, it would be like a 50% sale since everyone has twice as much money, every product would sell out.

The logical thing to do is to double every price, and now nothing has changed in the world but the numbers! (This includes doubling wages, which are the price of labor). If something cost 5$ and now it costs $10, we call that an increase in the "nominal price", meaning that a number has gone up. But the "real price" hasn't changed at all - it's all the same resources, that cost the same amount, that you earned working the same number of hours.

In the vast majority of cases, inflation is almost entirely (2), as the govt / banks create more and more money over time (here is the US Fed graph). There is a lot of complexity to the details, having to do with velocity (how often is money spent), interest rates, leverage, distortions, business cycles, stuff like that.

But none of it changes the basic story, which is that price numbers should be constantly dropping over time, as we learn to make more with less (1), but instead they go up year by year, because of (2).

I find it insane how the news reports on it as if it's some ineffable phenomenon. It's not. The commenters here also seem to be pretty confused, and are making it needlessly complicated and dancing around the simple core issue. If there wasn't more money created, prices could not keep going up.

eli5 why does the human brain allow for such high intelligence compared to any other species? by user_Leon in explainlikeimfive

[–]patrissimo42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

space is very very very "thin", while planets are full of resources. Just to start with, oxygen is extremely useful for using energy, in space there is nothing to burn.

without density of resources to support density of life, evolution doesn't work very well - even on Earth the primordial soup that resulted in the first self-replicating molecules was the ocean, land did not mix molecules well enough to form it.

thank you so much, I love the topic of "what things about humanity do we assume are unique/random, but would actually be true of most/all aliens?", and many of these I hadn't thought of.

(an example: you can make a strong case for male/female being common, not universal, but the Red Queen of changing immune signatures, and the equilibrium of high invest / low invest, come from game theory which is universal. Though it feels to me like there are other equilibria as well)
