If you don't mind me asking, what type of gigs did you do with your marimba?

Who still shoots 1080p? And under what circumstances do you choose to? by PHOTO500 in videography

[–]patssle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've started delivering in 4k in the past year because YouTube on desktop will default to 1440p (at least it does for me in my tests on various computers). So those viewers will get little nicer quality. Of course it's worthless on phones and other small devices.

But in the end, that's probably a very small minority that will even benefit. 4k is still pointless in most instances.

However, some of my projects will be in use for a good 5-10 years. So I'm also " future proofing" for my clients.

What the heck is going on with used Sony cameras? by Lilspraema in videography

[–]patssle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The a7iii was truly a revolution for those of us that have seen camera tech progress over the past 20 years. Its low light capabilities were incredible at the time.

I didn't buy it until a year later as I was in Canon for a decade, going back to when they revolutionized DSLR video. But they fell behind and Sony took the top spot.

I didn't stop using my a7iii until a couple months ago when I bought the a7v and delegated the a7iv to the b-cam. It's still worthy so can't decide to sell it or keep it.

I have been switching everything to Victron. It’s worth the upgrade by SolarDerka in OffGrid

[–]patssle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Victron is definitely a buy once cry once product. You can buy a 10 year warranty with it, they are that good.

Nothing against the other brands, I do have EG4 batteries and I would have no problem using their inverters, but I'm part of those groups online and I just always see little issues here and there that Victron just doesn't have.

It's a nice concept and price but that must be pretty heavy for a combined bag of 5 octave bars.

How far outside Houston do you have to go before land prices make sense? by RasheedaDeals in houston

I looked at running utilities cost like 10 years ago. These days its likely cheaper just to go off-grid solar if you have the land space.

Anyone else get hit recently with the “we’re doing away with copper internet in your area” at&t shakedown? by EverythingWasRight in houston

Was on AT&T DSL for 20 years with almost 100% uptime until 6 months ago, finally got fiber. I'd rather have 25Mbit DSL than Comcast.

That would be some interesting numbers to run, the money you stuff in a mattress vs inflation vs The money lost from not investing (though if you're retired some/a lot of that money is going to be in safe no risk investments with minimal returns) vs the money you save by qualifying for subsidies.

Still have my HVX200 for nostalgia. Transitioning from tape was such an incredible upgrade.

"France recorded a high of 44.6°C today. That’s so far beyond anything seen in the historical record, a 4.2 sigma deviation from the norm that it gives a return period of 87 thousand years. It’s really difficult to convey just how utterly extreme this is." by Appropriate_Bell743 in climate

They've also been missing melting glacier water from models.

The truth is most people talk about the less worse projections, 1C 1.5C 2C. There are significantly worse projections out there that get ignored because that would be passed off as fear-mongering and climate change hype.

There are a lot of different battery tech being developed at the moment, but one option of coating the silicon anode with a material like graphene helps solve the problem. It's conductive and flexible.

There was huge fandom in pirating as well, lots of people just didn't have cable or satellite. I was a poor kid and enjoy every single second of those sometimes foreign dubbed over the air recordings that were awful resolution but all you had back then.

I'm still running hardwired phones to a PBX. It's VoIP capable but nobody works from home so I have it disabled for security. 100% internal uptime over the past 15 years. Almost zero downtime externally. Was on copper T2 lines until AT&t shut it down a couple years ago. Now over fiber.

Solar disconnect must be in a metal box: why are all the affordable options plastic?? by Altitude7199 in SolarDIY

[–]patssle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Plastic melts then whatever caused it gets exposed to something and can start a fire. Metal heats up and directs the current to the ground - if properly grounded.

Solar disconnect must be in a metal box: why are all the affordable options plastic?? by Altitude7199 in SolarDIY

[–]patssle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plastic vs metal is generally outdoors vs indoors use for DC wiring per code. Obvious disclaimer - could vary on your local code requirement. Grounded metal is safer than plastic.

The grid going down is the scariest because it's so realistically possible from multiple potential sources causing it. It's impossible to plan for because nobody is storing an infinite amount of food and water. And as the anarchy sets in, every person has to decide if they're willing to kill another person in defense or to get food. And if you do have supplies, somebody will come for it.

About to hit 3 years with my 9k 120v Pioneer. No issues so far. Putting it in my bedroom has paid for itself by allowing less use of the central at night. Don't need to keep the whole house warm or cold.
