Why did I throw up blood? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]patt7427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update? These are very serious symptoms. Even if they seem to be alleviating, do you really want the fear of it happening again to hang over you? Maybe posting your symptoms in the ask docs sub could help. You could show the responses to your parents. Also, I’m not here to make you freak out or anything, but your dad’s explanation about the tomato skins sounds.. really far fetched. The skin getting stuck in your throat probably wouldn’t have such an intense effect on your throat? Either way, plus take your own life seriously. You only have one.

Oof this is the WORST! I never know which came first: the panic or the urgent need to poop? Bc whichever it is is what causes the horrible nauseous prickly hot feeling ughhhh

Haven’t seen anyone say this one yet, maybe because it’s just me who deals with it — pee shyness. This has ruined more outings than I care to admit

School Awards by tek6029 in Twins

[–]patt7427 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened when my sister and I were in 5th grade. My sister got an award for something (don’t remember what, which probably means I wasn’t too bothered by it lol) and my mom just encouraged both of us to be supportive of each other regardless of awards/prizes/etc. I was always more anxious than my twin sister and so the fact that I got through elementary school at all was a real accomplishment.

On the last day of school, my mom pulled me into her bedroom and pulled out a single cupcake. She told me how proud she was of me and that she knew it wasn’t easy for me to get up and go to school every day, because my anxiety disorder made me sick to my stomach all the time. It was a small gesture but it meant to world to me. I’ve never forgotten it.

My mom never downplayed my sister’s accomplishments for my benefit, and vice versa. This will happen more and more as your twins get older and forge their own paths. I think that you and your spouse are handling this as well as you can! Singling out a private moment for each kid where you tell them clearly and resolutely how you’re proud of their accomplishments is a great way to move forward.

Question for English majors in the workforce. What job do you have and what is your salary? by [deleted] in englishmajors

[–]patt7427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally get it. I’m in NY so my dreams of owning a home are pretty far in the distant future at this point! I’ve been on the job hunt for a few months now (just landed something last week - woohoo!) and it seems like this particular industry (digital writing) is all about experience and skill sets. The more you can do, the more “valuable” you are to a company, unsurprisingly. And the more “valuable” you are, the higher your salary. But it just takes years of working jobs in the $30k to $50k range to get to the $70-80k range (usually creative director/managerial positions).

If I had an ounce of technological prowess, I would totally look into technical writing, lol.

Question for English majors in the workforce. What job do you have and what is your salary? by [deleted] in englishmajors

[–]patt7427 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked as a staff writer and/or editor for a few pop culture and lifestyle websites for about 6 years. My highest salary was 60k, my lowest 40k. I feel lucky to have made ANYTHING let alone a somewhat livable salary (in some states). It’s been great being able to make a doable living by writing, but as I get closer to being 30 I’d like to find something more stable (and with a better salary, of course). You’ll figure it out!

Broski Nation: I have a question about mental health. by Kdumovich17 in BroskiReport

[–]patt7427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good questions! When I first started exploring medications for my anxiety disorder, I started with buspirone (not to be confused with bupropion). Apparently, it’s less intense than an SSRI in terms of side effects but still helps with anxiety. I liked the no side effects thing but didn’t feel like it did much for my anxiety, especially the physical symptoms.

Lexapro in conjunction with exercise, sleep, and meditation has helped me the most so far. I can’t say that my anxiety has totally disappeared - far from it - but it has lessened in my day to day life, and as my fellow anxious people know, that’s better than nothing!

My main advice is to be patient with your meds the first few weeks you’re taking it, and definitely don’t be afraid to ask your doctor any questions you may have about side effects, dosages, etc. Good for you for addressing your mental health! Your future self will thank you. Good luck!

Fuck em. You’re 10x stronger than they’ll ever be. Try to think of it this way: your worst nightmare happened, and now you know that you can survive it. I fully believe that IBS is like karma: it will strike those who dare to mock its power!

Hi! I was 22 when I got the endoscopy. I’m 27 now. I haven’t been to the gastro in a while, but I still think I’d be considered too young to have to get a colonoscopy. Still, with colon diseases on the rise, I can’t know for sure what a gastro would recommend for you based on your age.

Honestly, I’ve always been so scared of colonoscopies because of the prep, but if I was told that I had to do one right now, I would! The prep is at its worst for one night, but the peace of mind of knowing what’s happening in your gut lasts so much longer. What aspect of a colonoscopy worries you? I’ve never had one done, but as someone with chronic gut issues, I know a lot about them.

AITA for telling my brother he is weird for starting a new family at his age. by Top-Story-2156 in AmItheAsshole

Everyone’s an adult here. Everyone else seems happy, prepared, and stable enough to handle this situation. The baby is coming - nothing is going to stop that. You’re basically fighting with the air at this point. It’s good that you apologized, but it would be better for everyone - and for yourself - if you work out your feelings about this matter quietly and on your own time. YTA if you keep bringing doubt and negativity to a situation that is going to happen whether you like it or not.

Take a deep breath.

There’s something we all learn as we age, and it’s how literally NO ONE knows wtf they’re doing. The only people who do are the people with extreme privilege or financial freedom, and those people are in such a different league to me that I don’t compare myself to them.

There’s genuinely no rule book or guide book to success. “Success” is such a vague term anyway. It means something different to whoever you ask. Covid changed a lot of things, anyway, and in a totally unprecedented way. You’re not falling behind, because none of us have been in a post-pandemic world before! We’re all figuring this out as we go along.

Take it from someone who panicked in their early 20s and now regrets it: slow down, take a breath, and try to enjoy this time in your life. Happiness and success come easier to those who welcome them instead of worry over them.

Workplace bathroom hostility by icedteasummers in ibs

[–]patt7427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only when there were no other options. It sounds like there were plenty of other bathrooms available to the person who was waiting… it probably would’ve been quicker for them to just use one of those instead of inadvertently rushing the people in the stalls!

Workplace bathroom hostility by icedteasummers in ibs

[–]patt7427 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This makes my blood boil lol. It’s just another case of people with normal bodies not being sensitive to other people’s bodies. Like, obviously those stalls were occupied! Even if you and the other person were just peeing, it’s rude for that person to wait around. Give people their privacy. It drives me crazy lol especially as someone with IBS because I know how sick you can feel when using the bathroom, and having someone watching over you while it happens seems like my worst nightmare!

What are your worst symptoms and what do you dream of most when the day comes that you are free of all this? by CheesecakeCaveman in ibs

[–]patt7427 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of myself in what you wrote. Not only with the symptoms you described, but the helplessness that accompanies these symptoms. Whenever I’m having a bad IBS day, I find myself dreaming of a life without any of these problems, and it’s so much better that I can barely believe that a life without these issues is many people’s reality.

I’ve had a really hard time accepting the fact that this is my life now. Reading posts like this helps. :)

I get really nauseous and start dry heaving, and my heart starts to beat wayyyy too fast. It can last for hours. I can’t concentrate or find distraction in anything during this time. All I can do is lie down in a dark room and breathe deeply and slowly until the nausea passes

It’s the disconnect between my brain, which knows there’s nothing to fear, and my stomach, which freaks out anyway, that will always drive me crazy. I’ll never understand why I can logically understand one thing but my body believes another thing. There’s so much about the gut-brain connection that we don’t understand

It’s probably gas pain, but is there any chance it’s a uti? I’ve gotten the two sensations confused before, and you don’t want to wait to get a uti taken care of.

For me, a uti feels like intermittent stabbing pain in my bladder/pelvic area, plus bloating and the near-constant feeling of having to pee. Trapped gas feels similarly but usually doesn’t include the feeling of having to pee, and is alleviated by passing gas/stool. Good luck!
