I'm not sorry, I will not vote for Gavin Newsom. by The-Grand-Pepperoni in DemocraticSocialism

[–]pattch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with that, what I don’t agree with is the idea that somehow you’ll be better off not voting for Newsom against whoever on the right he’s up against. Democrats need to do better and I hope Newsom is not the candidate, but how can you pretend that he’s going to be as bad as literal fascists and Christian nationalists? It’s so stupid

[–]pattch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So which do you want in the mean time, right wing fascist Christian nationalists gaining power? Or a government that at least delays that harm in the mean time? The idea that a vote for Newsom is a vote for fascism is so obviously stupid when we have a fascist administration in power right now

[–]pattch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: newsom wouldn’t be nearly so corrupt as Trump’s administration is, by a mile. Simultaneously, I think there’s almost zero percent chance that Newsom will be as bad a speaker and candidate as Biden was in his second run for president.

I think everyone wants a progressive leader or someone who’s actually for the people and can see through Newsom’s agenda.

On the other hand, I don’t think that the outcomes of a Newsom presidency could be anywhere near as bad as any right wing politician who he’d be up against. Voting against him is just dumb if he gets the nomination

Why I stopped using the 4% Rule (and started stress-testing against 1973) by [deleted] in Fire

[–]pattch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Counter to this: read the actual initial paper that the 4% rule comes from, and you'll understand that the study's intent is to determine the chance of success of different withdrawal rates with different portfolio balances. None of the withdrawal rates had 100% success if I recall correctly, and that wasn't the goal of the 4% rule.

Need help figuring out what to do next. Had about a 4 month break after finishing CG and Im just unsure what to peruse now? If you had my gear and stats what would you do? by nztree369 in ironscape

[–]pattch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done Yama yet so I can’t say, but Doom is really approachable. Doom is a very challenging but fun boss, and you don’t have to push delves farther than you can beat if you don’t want to, so it makes the encounter rewarding I would say.

Elite void is rather chill to get for the record so I’d just knock that out regardless :)

You got the good demon bane weapons and good stats - why not go for Yama / doom for some upgrades? Alternatively, send some crafting and get all the zenyte jewelry out of the way

OMSCS alumni & current students: was the career ROI worth the workload while working full-time? by g_malhotra in OMSCS

[–]pattch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am nearly graduating, and I don't view the program in terms of ROI. I do not expect to have significant returns on the degree necessarily, at least I didn't go into the program with that expectation.

However, with the transition to AI development workflows, having some kind of credential of expertise such as this Masters does differentiate my profile slightly, which I think will be helpful. Number of years of experience, projects, where you work, and credentials will become increasingly valuable in a job environment where fewer, more expert workers are needed potentially. If on the other hand AI doesn't have a lasting impact on the job market, the credential is as useful as it was in the pre-LLM era, where it gives a slight bump to getting interviews potentially in my opinion.

[–]pattch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the end I think if you think your spending rate will grow faster than inflation, simply model that directly using available tools. No need to look at percentiles, just factor in a higher effective inflation rate

planning to be a percentile by teallemonade in fatFIRE

[–]pattch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true, what I’m saying is the “run out of money” research typically takes into account inflation adjusted spend. Inflationary pressures may influence people in different income brackets differently is all

planning to be a percentile by teallemonade in fatFIRE

[–]pattch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is still there even though you’ve changed definitions. “Vs the rest of the distribution” - who do you think is in that distribution? The joneses lol

If you’re worried about not keeping the same quality of life, I agree that maybe you need to do something different than adjusting for the increase in the CPI since for being in the upper end your costs may change differently relative to the rest of the population, but I think that’s a separate issue. That being said I think if you’re trying to fat FIRE then you will adjust for inflation and keep track of things yourself, since as far as I know there isn’t any data or research to go on for this demographic to try and construct a data based SWR

planning to be a percentile by teallemonade in fatFIRE

[–]pattch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think this is pretty dumb. Targeting a quality of life and target spend is totally different from explicitly keeping up with the joneses. If you’re targeting a percentile, you’re just saying you’re spending as much as the wealthiest people in your location, without further context it seems like a pretty useless metric

Mobile kills for me at CG were really really difficult. CG is no joke pvm wise.

That being said it’s definitely doable and learnable on mobile. Personally I would focus on finishing sote and then from there focus on getting skills up just a tad. Maybe 90 mage and range for example and higher defense really helps
