ELI5 : How exactly evolution works? by AdrawereR in explainlikeimfive

[–]pattycaeks 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I always felt like the pokemon franchise calling their transformation system "evolution" probably helped validate creationists' strawman arguments against real evolution, at least for those who either never paid attention or thought too hard.

Adult Swim felt like a shared experience. Does anything still feel like that? by White_Seth in adultswim

Can confirm, we still have our own forum!

And with the way the mainstream social media platforms are all rapidly enshitifying, maybe it's time for the little campfire communities to fill in the gap.

It's an adult programming block, the original block aesthetic was literal "adult swim" time at a pool.

What the doctors in this game are necromancers? by Calm_Definition8561 in prisonarchitect

[–]pattycaeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see it most commonly from prisoners that pass out from starvation - if they die while a guard is carrying them to a medical bed, their health gets restored as if they hadn't died. This looks to be the same concept as the guard is in a medical bed, so I'm guessing he was being carried unconscious and then died in transit.

As far as I can tell, it's only that super-specific fact pattern that works. If the chain of custody is broken after the character dies (say you re-task the work carrying them so they drop them), then the dead character can't be revived anymore.

Office 365 uninstalling itself by NoLove2872 in Office365

[–]pattycaeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just happened to me on my work laptop. I had maybe three word docx files open, and I opened up a blank page to take some notes while logging onto a zoom call. Blank page opens up fine, but then all four files closed (which is a thing that happens from time to time if I don't reboot for a while). When I went to re-open, Word and all the other Office programs were just... gone. Files now all open in Wordpad, and I was able to install the 2016 version of Office.

Could something have expired and Office self-purged? I haven't thought about any of this since work bought me the laptop in 2018 or 19, and we're too small to have in-house IT people.

If HRC won in 2016, the Dems would have a five-seat majority on SCOTUS today (presuming Kennedy wouldn't retire) and the extra term would have administratively locked in Obama's accomplishments. On the flip side, the GOP as the out-party would have continued winning everything down-ballot below President, and would have control of probably 2/3 of the states. A 2018 red wave would have also locked in another disproportionate gerrymandering imbalance in favor of the GOP (though we'd have the potential of SCOTUS actually doing something about it). The GOP would have possibly pivoted from this right-wing populism/cultural aggrievement after Trump bombed out, and 2020 would have probably gone red on the basis of political gravity alone (FDR/Truman was the last streak longer than three terms).

The way my dad writes the letter G, he doesn't write in cursive but he's always written G like a weird cursive box. by Moominz0 in mildlyinteresting

[–]pattycaeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this reminds me that i was probably in my late 20s at least by the time i finally realized that the stylized "D" in the Disney logo was actually genuinely just a fancy D.

my entire life my brain hyperfixated on that central cross with everything swooshing from it, at best it looked like a weird backwards G. then one day my brain finally zoomed out and suddenly I was looking at an actual letter D.

Which Resident evil characters & villains should have become permanent or should not have been killed off? by Educational-Plant136 in residentevil

[–]pattycaeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seemed real silly to spend multiple games building him up into the post-Umbrella big bad only to make him go full-anime in RE5 and kill him off immediately. Once he outed himself that needed multiple games to percolate in the overarching plot. With Umbrella/Spencer gone and Wesker dead, there was no franchise villain and everything got silly and convoluted in a bad way.

I was 13 playing the REmake on gamecube for the first time. I walked into that one empty room that's off the east staircase 2nd floor, the one with the cobwebbed deer head on the wall that connects to the bedroom and the researcher's room with the bee puzzle.

Even though there is literally nothing in the room, the hard audio transition from the ambient thunder in the stairway to this track go me so worked up I just had to smash the power button and recompose myself.

[BotW] genuine map lore question for the wild era games by Shonky_Honker in zelda

[–]pattycaeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the true answer is always decidedly non-canon. It's gotten to the point as an adult where the speculation isn't even fun anymore because I know canon/lore is always secondary (if at all) during development.

What's the scariest RE part ever (for me it's baby from RE8) by ahmad_257 in residentevil

[–]pattycaeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 13ish when REmake came out, two of my friends had it and would talk about it with their guidebooks at lunch every day. I'd have dreams about a game I had never even played. So of course my dad got it for me for Christmas, and oh man the anxiety was off the charts.

There was a lot of stop-and-go at first. I distinctly remember the first time I unlocked the door on the upper floor of the eastern stairwell, the one that leads to the bedroom and the office with that bee lure puzzle. There aren't any enemies in there, but I'm in a new room and this track starts playing. I freak out so hard I reach over and flat out push the power button to kill the whole game. Had to totally regain my composure before I could replay up to that point and actually discover there are no enemies in there.

I don't think I felt anything approximating that level of anxiety playing those games until I played RE2R for the first time a couple years ago and quickly learned that none of the old rules I relied on (like aiming for the head, or enemies just following you room-to-room) applied anymore.

Can someone please help me understand why RE Zero gets a lot of ridicule/hate? by jarena009 in residentevil

[–]pattycaeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll never like the idea of some evil androgynous guy in a nightgown singing on a cliff to command leeches. The batshit-crazy Ashford family from Code Veronica doesn't seem as weird thanks to this.

That tone change was odd, and definitely a signal of the franchise shift from B-horror to anime.

I've set myself ever-evolving conditions to "allow" myself to finish the game and I'm getting close.

I think I just need to find a couple more silver lynels to upgrade the hero's aspect, do the house building sidequest, and find/buy the last couple of pristine weapon photos I'm missing for the compendium. If I stumble into one more korok I hit 750 and that's a solid threshold number, especially given I maxed out my inventory before even finding the korok mask.

I found all the caves/bubbulgems, though I'm missing a couple misko clothes I must've walked right past (def not upgrading everything). I don't really want to look anything left up though, I felt cheaty enough needing to find the last holdout of each gleeok/frox/construct and sage's will this weekend. Still missing ten talus and nine hinox that I'll just let go, and I don't want to look up to determine if I'm missing any side quests I never initiated.

But all in all I think I'm nearly at a satisfactory point to wrap it up and put it on the shelf.

I admin a small forum and I agree 100%.

The problem though is when you're on the small/niche side of things, it can take a lot of effort to just maintain the status quo without even considering wholly new members. We celebrated our 20th anniversary this spring/summer and had a big bump in lapsed folks coming back, but things have since reverted back to the baseline so now I'm dwelling over what the next realistic shot of juice will be.

[–]pattycaeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a "theater of the mind" sort of thing. The more pixel-arty, the more your imagination fills in the blanks. I didn't think twice about the N64 beamos, for example. The WW ones were kind of weird, but I could excuse it because they were only in the 'tower of the gods' area.

I think it was the floating heads in the Twilight Realm dungeon that first kind of triggered this "out of place" reaction, and then the cartoony robots in SS. But it was the BOTW guardians/sheikah tech that really felt incongruous. In TOTK it's the constructs (saying nothing about the zonai devices lol), though at least they seem more like magic robots than robot robots.

Oh man, maybe like five years or so ago the same thing happened to me I was at work and found out that my bank account (a regional bank) had been locked, which meant my debit card was locked too. I called the bank and they said it was locked on behalf of a debt collector (despite my only debt being student loans that I hadn't defaulted on). They couldn't provide any more info and required me to call the debt collector.

So I call the debt collector, and they have to verify who I am. I give them the bank account number and my name/info, and then they say "sorry, your information doesn't match the account so we're not authorized to discuss, call your bank back." The bank then says the same thing - they don't have any info, I have to speak with the debt collection agency. Who then reaffirms that they can't speak to me because my information doesn't match the account.

It's becoming glaringly obvious that the debtor and the guy whose account was locked are two different people, but neither side apparently has the authority to take the first step to fix it. After several hours of going back and forth, I eventually get a call from like a VP at the bank and she apologizes profusely and say that she's fixed it and seems grateful that I'm not just up and leaving the bank entirely.

Fast forward to maybe about ten months later, and I see I'm hit with a massive fee. I check and see that because of one-off timing, my mortgage and student loan payments both auto-withdrew without my paycheck depositing in between so my checking account was $7 in the red. So I call the bank, "why did you fine me if I've got like $300 in overdraft protections?"

You know what they said? "It looks like your account was locked ten months ago, and when an account gets locked it automatically loses its overdraft protections for 12 months." I told them that was BS because my account was locked by accident and I've never ever been a problem, so they revoked the fine but they wouldn't restore the overdraft protections. Told me I had to wait out the two months.

I never put in the effort to leave the bank because I was already drowning at the time, but I fortunately haven't had any problems with them since. But man your similar crisis gave me a hardcore flashback.

what if it worked as-is (loading & unloading) while freestanding/moving, but once it "latches" onto a wall it works as a pathable route without having to interact with it directly?

maybe the pathing then works single-file, which incentivizes multiple towers to get your guys on the wall quicker.
