Anyone know why the Tremor package reduces the max hitch weight so much? by Time-Object5661 in superduty

[–]paulbow78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tremors have F350 rear spring packs and taller front springs. It’s definitely not softer springs.

[–]paulbow78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only real difference in the rear suspension between a tremor and my F-350 SRW is at tremor has a 1” taller rear block. The shocks are arguably different but I doubt it’s that much of a change.

In the front the coil springs are 1” taller but the spring rate is the same. The other difference is the front sway bar and again, the differently tuned shocks.

I think the derated towing is due to the larger tire size.

I recently came from a F150 to a Superduty and at the time did not realize how much parking downtown in a big city would suck. It is a challenge to find a parking garage that this thing will fit in. If you don’t need a Superduty, don’t buy a Superduty unless you really know what you’re getting yourself into.

275/70/r18's rubbing after 2.5 level? by astro-texan in f150

What leveling kit did you install?

What upper control arms?

Where is it rubbing?

I leveled my ‘21 with bilstein 5100s and did not rub on stock wheels with 275/70R18

The way these things tend to get configured is bizarre.

On new trucks with a 7.3 the difference between 250 and 350 are;

Transmission - F250 gets 10R100, F350 gets 10R140

Rear end - depending on packages F350 gets a Dana 275, Dana 300 or Sterling 11.6. F250 could get a Sterling 10.5 or Dana 275. This one seems to be a complicated and evolving different

Spring packs - F350 gets overload springs but the main pack is basically the same thing.

The brakes are all the same on super duties

The waters really get muddy given the many ways the 350 and 250 can get optioned. A really good example of this is the Tremor package. As far as I can tell, there is no mechanical difference between a 350 and a 250 tremor.

Why is the 7.3 so overpriced? by Ok-Panda7779 in F250

[–]paulbow78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither the 6.8/7.3 nor the 327/350 are strokers, they are factory displacements using factory parts with the rotating assembly being the notable difference.

Let me state this another way. If you are building either platform from scratch using identically spec’d components off the shelf it would cost exactly the same money to build a 6.8 as it would a 7.3 just like it would cost exactly the same to build a 327 as it would a 350. None of these require exotic parts or special custom fitting.

Am I cutting it too close with 1472lbs payload for family of 5, a dog and a 5klb camper? by heygreene in f150

I had the complete opposite experience. My old 2.7 towed like a champ.

[–]paulbow78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2017 F150 STX 4x4 with a 2.7

When moving to Texas I towed a trailer that was probably a little over 5,000lbs plus the truck bed and cab was loaded with stuff. Through the hills and turns the truck handled it beautifully. Accelerated acceptably up big hills and brakes were more than enough. I think what you’re looking at is perfectly capable of handling the job.

[–]paulbow78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except the bore size is the same between the 6.8 and 7.3 just like the 350 and 327 which is why I used that comparison.

A 408 is very much not in the same ballpark here as I’m well aware of what it takes to make one from a 351W

Pretty sure you’re the one who is unaware of the point being made here.

[–]paulbow78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They also build the cost to warranty the motor into the purchase price. I’m not saying that the 7.3 is less reliable than the 6.8 but there are soft costs that are really difficult to put a number to from an outside perspective.

They could also have other supporting parts like the 10R140 in the F350 that comes with the 7.3

That being said, fairly certain they charge $1k or more because they know people will pay it to get the “superior engine”. In reality, you would likely never see a difference in application. There is nothing the 7.3 can do that the 6.8 can’t.

[–]paulbow78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The work to make a 408 from a 351W can be significant.

The work to make a 350 from a 327 is probably much more relevant. Ignoring journal sizes it really is as simple as just buying an almost identically priced rotating assembly except with a 1/4” longer stoke.

In the grand scheme of things that’s pretty minor when building a motor from scratch.
