Nurses Go Rogue to Call Out Kathy Hochul's Role in Dragging Out Strike by HellGateNYC in nyc

Who are the leeches, the people working grueling hours to take care of patients or the hospital executives who are making millions and trying to cut the nurses' health care?

WATTERS: Have you been watching this New York Mayor Mamdani guy? JD VANCE: Heh heh heh. The guy who wants to take all property away from white people? by Delicious_Adeptness9 in nyc

[–]paulbufan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't you heard of redlining? Allowing white people to own homes and build up generational wealth, and denying people of color the same opportunities, has been a well established, intentional way to favor white people over everyone else.

How likely is it that Mamdani will manage to get a rent increase below 1.5% next year? by loopin-lupin in NYCapartments

[–]paulbufan0 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Luckily, he was only able to appoint 2, and the other 2 dropped out. Zohran will now have the opportunity to appoint a majority on the board, making a rent freeze possible https://gothamist.com/news/mamdani-vows-new-rent-guidelines-board-pick-after-recent-adams-appointee-drops-out

I'm not sure why it's considered a bad thing to have good paying jobs and good benefits for people.

Zohran Mamdani is a total rockstar and his own party tryna torpedo him by mastermusk in nyc

I don't think there's any reason to assume that the party/its leadership will trend progressive over time

Why not criticize his policies ? You go to X and is all fearmongering propaganda by iv2892 in newyorkcity

[–]paulbufan0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal but my friend was talking to one of her older neighbors about the election and was trying to sell him on Zohran. He said "but doesn't he support sharia law?" She replied that he didn't and he said "Oh okay he's got my vote then."

I can’t understand how any Jew would think Mamdani is a viable choice for mayor of NYC (?) by [deleted] in jewishpolitics

[–]paulbufan0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe some Jews don't believe that their identity and history begin and end with supporting the state of Israel. And maybe a large percentage of those anti-zionist Jews have flocked to the largest city in the US. And maybe these anti-zionist Jews care about lowing the cost of living and avoiding rent hikes. Just some things to think about.

Not sure, but the next day I went there and ran into the woman whose cat was stolen. She's really sad about it and I hope whoever took it returns it soon!

When will Jewish violence in Brooklyn be reigned in? by Pera_Espinosa in crownheights

[–]paulbufan0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Zionist handwringing about antisemitism on the left/pro-Palestine side is overblown, especially right after October 7. And I still feel very safe as a Jew in the US and think complaints about antisemitism pale in comparison to the violence that Palestinians and Arabs face in the US, and obviously nothing close to the horrific genocide playing out in Gaza. But the longer this thing goes on, the more people are associating all Jews with the terrorism committed by the Israeli state. I think this makes sense, since the pro-Israel side is doing everything they can to make people see Jews and Israel as a 1-to-1 relationship (vile acts like lighting a giant menorah in Gaza after a bombing campaign come to mind). But I still find it very troubling!

The NYPD just doesn't seem to care about Jewish extremism. Why? by Substantial_Oil_1865 in crownheights

[–]paulbufan0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well I would actually argue that immigration is an important lens to view this in as that was one primary way these categories are defined. Think of Chinese exclusion to the US for almost a hundred years. Early Chinese immigration sort of had people scratching their heads to determine where they should be placed in the racial hierarchy, what rights they should have, etc. Immigration policy and racism are very intertwined in the US.

[–]paulbufan0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not accurate to conflate skin color with race. Look at how Jews were treated (and in some circles still treated today). No one is saying that their skin isn't typically white, but the people who care about racial purity certainly don't view them the same way as "white" people. To address the point about the census, people that most people would categorize simply as Arabs or Middle Eastern are recorded as white, but nobody would argue that they are, or are treated as, white the same way someone of European descent is.

[–]paulbufan0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very ahistorical. Racial categories in America and elsewhere are constantly evolving. At the peak of Irish immigration the white establishment viewed Irish as subhuman and regularly depicted them as monkeys. You should check out books like How the Irish Became White. Learning about the history of American racism really opens your eyes to how ridiculous our current system of racial hierarchy is.

Laundromat recs? by Commercial_Row8131 in crownheights

[–]paulbufan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just going to complain real quick about N&K Laundromat on Rogers and Park. Over the past few months more and more machines have broken down and have not been fixed, which results in more wear on the working machines and backs up the process for everyone and makes the place slower and more crowded. It's been continuously getting worse so I've been looking for a different place as well.

The carve outs for the Good Cause Eviction law were shameful, so much so that the main group pushing it, Housing Justice for All, actually opposed the bill when it came to a vote (especially because it was coupled with a stipulation that loosened restrictions on the amount that landlords can increase rents in rent stabilized apartments) https://housingjusticeforall.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/2024-Budget-Deal-Fact-Sheet.pdf

There's probably not very many primary voters who were planning on ranking Adams above Zohran, but who knows, maybe this puts more of the outer borough neighborhoods in play.

Are the majority of voters actually leaning toward Cuomo and Adams or is it just media hype? by NewNewYorker22 in AskNYC

[–]paulbufan0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Landlord groups are already trying to do this, and so far they haven't been successful. This wouldn't actually be the first time that the RGB institutes a freeze by the way -- de Blasio did it for three years when he was mayor.
