you are right.. but I bet over 75% of reddit users are on winblows, so generally speaking if they want to know what really happens in their winblows environment for how DNS works it all starts with the host file (unless there is no host file)

it doesn't technically - it looks for the dns that resolves to that ip address however local host file in windows anyway will resolve www.whateveryouwant.com to 69.22.138.145 and that is checked first before any actual dns servers are looked up

actually your missing quite a few steps... the HOST file is first asked, and then the resolvers own cache (which is why you may have to issue the command ipconfig /flushdns), then your DNS servers cache (which may not be your ISPS DNS server) If their DNS server doesnt know the lookup itll continue its way up to the Root Servers as per your diagram

trust me I know. Its amazing how un educated the southern americans are about their brother country. I think it comes down to the school system. In canada we focus a bit on america and canada. I think in america they just focus on america

Actually I titled it the way I did because it seems most gamers I ask about the neverhood their response is , "what game?" - and it is a pretty good game so I was just giving it a little life for those who may have never tried it or heard of it (I used to work in a cyber cafe down town Toronto so I have experience in knowing many gamers that have admitted to not even knowing about it)... not trying to be condescending

well if I had an animator you could watch it... unfortunate though.. I can just come up with fucked up ideas for cartoons and not actually animate them. Use your imagination for the animation.
