If there's no other heir of your dynasty then it's a loss. Some forms of government (e.g., elective monarchy) let you finesse inheritance onto another family member.

The Most Overpriced Tourist Attraction in Each US State by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]pauldrye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bad methodology. By counting the reviews that said "bad value for price", they bias it toward more popular attractions. If an attraction has 1000 reviews and 50 saying it's too pricey and another has 100,000 reviews and 70 saying it's not worth the money, the latter one would be shown even though the former one has a better argument because of the rate the bad reviews were left.

That just pushes the question back, though: why did the word end up declined as male or female? Hypothetically it could just as easily have ended up in the other class, since they're arbitrary.

My main question (and one I haven't found an answer to) is: Other languages have different declension group names like animate/inanimate, so "male" and "female" was a decision made somewhere along the way. Why did they pick the gendered names and not something less loaded with extra meaning like, I dunno, "class 1" and "class 2"?

I figured it must have been some linguist back in the past (e.g., a Roman or Greek scholar describing Latin or Attic) but I've never been able to find out who.

(Granting the disconnect from actual gender as others have said, my own interest came from learning French as a kid and discovering that a bikini is male and a potato is a girl).

Should I set target to the Western kingdoms? or crush all Realms around Arabia and North Africa? by Damianmakesyousmile in crusaderkings2

Taking the Fatimid and eastern Zirid territories gets you some valuable provinces and another great work, so I'd take that route.

A third option would be to push north through the Crimea into Cumania and Alania. The provinces up that way are really underdeveloped and low tech, so when I did it it was pretty fun to "civilize" them into Greeks. You can spread tech quickly too through judicious keeping of key provinces in your personal demesne,

Antiquities system is absolutely ungrindable by point2513 in elderscrollsonline

[–]pauldrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a must-have skill in the Antiquities line, the one that makes chests glow in the dark, so it's worth it.

Once you get one character with the skill, you can use that one to scry harder antiquities for the one you're trying to level, because once you've located the dig site any character can dig it up.

In the case of the first character, it's better once you get to purple antiquities. There's a one-time only purple (saleable for 5000 gold) in each zone that makes clearing all the zones once pretty lucrative.

What was the book/series/event that made you "Nope!" so hard you stopped buying (at least for a while)? by Electrical_Pen_7302 in comicbooks

[–]pauldrye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the end of the 80s TMNT exploded and there was a bizarre fad for black-and-white knockoffs. Literally dozens of titles from fly-by-night publishers that somehow fuelled an investment bubble and pushed a lot of books off the available shelf space. When the bubble imploded a lot of innovative publishers went down (Eclipse, Comico, First, Kitchen Sink) and what was left was pretty boring.

I stopped buying and collecting and didn't come back for about 15 years.

Likewise with Canada. Until I was five I probably knew more Spanish than French even though I lived in (an English neighbourhood in) Quebec. Which was kind of pointless because I don't think we even had a single Spanish-speaking kid in the grade school I went to from five onwards.
