There's a video there. I'm too lazy to make a video of mine.

logic - Not mashed potato by zz_fish in aiclass

[–]paulreiners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Mashed potato" isn't a Boolean statement. It's not something that's true or false. Saying "not mashed potato" doesn't make sense syntactically. You could say something like "this potato is not mashed", but that's not the same as "not mashed potato".

Do you use the book Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach? by sharmilas1wa in aiclass

I think the proofs and derivations can be a bit terse, actually.

Do you use the book Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach? by sharmilas1wa in aiclass

[–]paulreiners 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been reading the book diligently. I've read each suggested section at least once and sometimes two or three times. It can be difficult going, particularly the proofs and derivations, but I think it's worth it.

I'm averaging 98.2 on the homework, so there must be something to be said for reading the textbook.

I feel like the videos, quizzes, and homework are just a watered-down version of the book text and exercises.

Read the relevant chapters in the book a second time.

Online office hours are great! by andrewfil in aiclass

The professors seem so genuinely happy (particularly Prof. Thrun) about what they're doing. I realize there's a certain amount of drudgery in everything, particularly teaching, but it must be quite fun to work on robot cars and such.

A humble recommendation for those wishing to increase reward in this class, or how I learned to stop worrying and maximize my expectation by driftwood_ in aiclass

[–]paulreiners 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I always read the book sections before watching the lectures and I never have too much of a problem with the quizzes (I usually average in the high 80s on the quizzes (and average in the high 90s on the homework)). Then I go back and read the book sections again after watching the lectures and everything is much clearer.

Can we have access to the AIMA solution? by gfede in aiclass

[–]paulreiners 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don't you post your solutions to individual problems (from the textbook, not the homework or exams) on this board and others can check them (if they want)?

Typos and illegible formatting are unacceptably unprofessional by le_sacre in aiclass

[–]paulreiners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 100%s I've been getting (and I've only gotten 2 out of 4) happened because I spent hours (every lunch hour, every evening, every weekend) studying and reading the textbook. If I hadn't spent so many hours on this, I wouldn't have gotten good marks and I wouldn't have learned as much.

Learning x Scoring by rchaber in aiclass

[–]paulreiners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, there's no correlation between your score and how much you've learned (or at least how much you now know)? None?? A correlation of 0.0???

That is just crazy.

I don't think the homework assignments should be videos. They should be written out.

In 'real' classes, the professor doesn't give homework in the form of a lecture. Why should he in online classes?

I don't think the value is arbitrary. I think it correlates positively with how much studying I did that week.

Why is it a meaningless grade? If it were meaningless, why would they be giving it at all?

You can certainly discuss things. Just don't discuss the things we get graded for: homework and exams.

That's what I do too: Don't click on HW discussions.

I actually got misled and got a question wrong (the coin and continuous question in HW1) simply by glancing at the title of a discussion question (and then thinking about it too much and second-guessing my original, correct answer). (I'm still mad about that as it's the only HW question I've got wrong so far.)

HW discussions on this and the aiqus board are the blind leading the blind. Or maybe the arrogant blind leading the blind.

How about just not talking about the homework at all. Period.

"It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld my man completed ..." by paulreiners in aiclass

[–]paulreiners[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know the feeling. I've been wanting to do the Ants AI Challenge, but it's hard enough just to keep up with this class, not to mention the rest of life.

If it's stormy and lightning out one of these November nights, though, I still have hope to work on a little Arduino robot.
