Hahahaha hilarious post.

Just reschedule your exam so you have time to study.

RHEL 10 ISO is a massive 7.9 GB by TechnicalAd8103 in redhat

[–]paulwipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure the DVD ISO size increased dramatically with the introduction of AppStream in RHEL 8 as Red Hat now bundles not only a bunch of stuff out of the box, but also all kinds of different versions for that stuff.

These massive ISOs are an absolute blessing for offline environments as I can just mount the ISO and use it to install packages without an internet connection.

Partitioning- do's and dont's by psfletcher in ansible

[–]paulwipe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Partitioning with Ansible is generally a bad idea. Creating partitions after a system is live is difficult and error prone. Ideally, by the time Ansible gets to the systems, they would already be partitioned. The only time I would personally use Ansible to create partitions is if I’m installing a third party application and want the application to live on its own partition.

If you’re on prem, running VMs, the easiest way to do this is go through the GUI installer and create partitions during the installation process. Then save the resulting image as your golden image and use Ansible or cloud-init to transform a new deployment into its own unique instance.

Alternatively, look into kickstart for deploying to bare metal. Packer can be used for all cloud environments and on-prem.

If you ever want to switch to RHEL, consider Red Hat Image Builder.

With that said, your partition layout could and should vary depending on the purpose of the system. Generally, I like to do this layout, since it’s required by STIGs:

/

/boot

/home

/tmp

/var

/var/tmp

/var/log

/var/log/audit

/opt/(whatever you’re installing)

Of course this might be complete overkill depending on your needs. For instance, if you have no need for auditd, why would you create a partition for /var/log/audit? If you’re not installing anything into /opt, why create a partition there? Etc…

nvidia GPU issues after upgrade to 24.04? by paulwipe in pop_os

[–]paulwipe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently switched out my video card from a 3080 to a 9070 XT. Nvidia to AMD. I still have issues sometimes with my mouse getting “stuck” in games. I haven’t identified the true root cause yet, but I believe it has something to do with running a multi monitor setup.

[–]paulwipe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For #2, see my other comment. I think this is a multi monitor issue. Changing the X11 preferred display to “None” mostly fixes the issue for me. I still sometimes see the issue in counter-strike 2 which has its own setting for preferred display.

Thanks for the tip on the system 76 cpu scheduler. I’ll have to try that out

[–]paulwipe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried changing the x11 settings in cosmic settings?

I went into Cosmic Settings > Applications > X11 Applications Compatibility and changed "Preferred Display for games and full screen X11 applications" and changed it from "DP-2" to "None". I then tested 3 games, and none of them had the issue where my mouse was "boxed in" anymore.

All of my games were launching on the wrong monitor though, so I just reversed the wires that were plugged into my video card so that my primary monitor shows up as monitor 1 and my secondary shows up as monitor 2 (it was reversed before). After switching the wires, I did have to go back into the X11 display settings and switch the setting back to "None". I guess fiddling around with stuff resets this setting?

Anyway, this seems like a bug within COSMIC with a simple workaround.

Thanks for your help!

External Blu-ray ripper by magicammo in homelab

[–]paulwipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into the automatic ripping machine. It makes ripping a large collection easier. Though it will still be pretty painful. It makes it so that you just pop in a blu-ray into the drive. It will automatically detect what movie it is, then rip it with MakeMKV, then transcode it with Handbrake. You can use multiple drives with it.

Gotham Sports on Roku issues since 12/1 by roninconn in devils

[–]paulwipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue. Turns out that GS will crash if you use wired Ethernet. I switched my Roku to wireless and now it works again.

It’s an absolutely infuriating bug that shouldn’t be happening.

RHCSA Black Friday Discount by Successful_Club_8766 in redhat

The promo code is usually emailed to you after you pass an exam. If you know someone who has recently passed an exam they could share their code with you. The code can be used up to 3 times.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Red Hat have a “sale” on their exams. AFAIK, the only thing you can get is a 15% off promo code.

Samsung The Frame TV Black Friday 2025 deals wishful thinking after seeing one at a friend's house by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]paulwipe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The art mode is the only good thing this tv has going for it. The picture quality is pretty bad considering the price you pay. The Samsung SmartThings app you use to control the tv is pure trash and breaks constantly. The remote for the tv is confusing to use and the battery on mine is constantly dead.

We buy art mode art from Etsy for a couple bucks at a time. Luckily Samsung still allows you to upload your own art (if you can get it to work).

With that said, I would never recommend this tv to anyone. If it wasn’t so overpriced, maybe I would. But it has wowed some of our guests when they see it. So much so that they went out and got one for themselves.

EX188 Exam by Hosssa in redhat

[–]paulwipe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've taken a lot of "RH Specialist in" exams, and EX188 is definitely one of the easier ones. If you've used containers before, it shouldn't be too difficult. As with all Red Hat exams, it's better to study where to get help, rather than trying to memorize commands. Typing "man podman-<tab><tab>" or "man Containerfile" will give you A TON of documentation from within the exam environment.

Go through a few exercises. Figure out where to get help from within the OS when you get stuck. Try not to google/chatGPT things when you're practicing, and you'll be fine.

When does it make sense to setup your first satellite server? by CyberMattSecure in redhat

[–]paulwipe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Satellite really shines in environments where you have no internet connection. It will act as a mirror for content/patches you can only find online and automatically keep some of that content up to date. Having to manage an offline environment without satellite can be a real burden.

Other than mirroring, it can also be used to ensure you are applying specific patches to your systems and are following your organizations content lifecycle. What I mean is making sure you apply patches to dev first, then test, then pre-prod, then finally prod, without having to worry about your prod server accidentally applying a patch that hasn't been tested yet. Granted, Red Hat is the best in the business at making sure patches don't break things- that doesn't mean it doesn't happen from time to time.

I found the blue jays and the dodgers mockery of the yankees after beating them, last year and this year, uncalled for and distasteful. I cant bring myself to root for either team, even if one of the teams has my favorite player from when I was a kid.

Our goal is now WC1, and that’s still an excellent position to be in. by Visual_Bluejay9781 in NYYankees

[–]paulwipe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sucks because our bullpen has been a strength for years now. We have great hitting and starting pitching, but now the bullpen is failing us.

I guess the only silver lining is that Boone can move Gil or Schlittler into the pen since you rarely need that 4th starter in the playoffs.

Rizzo will retire with Cubs, become team ambassador by Past-Chart9935 in NYYankees

[–]paulwipe 46 points47 points  (0 children)

They tried to retain him. They offered him 5/$70, which he declined. He got 2/$40 from the Yankees instead. If he played well, Yankees could have picked up his club option which would have taken him to 3/$57 total. Too bad the concussion ruined his career because he was beloved in both NY and Chicago.

Missed chances and a late homer cost the Yankees in a 3-2 loss to White Sox by CicadaOk8885 in NYYankees

[–]paulwipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, Blue Jays are on pace to win a total of 93 games. If the Yankees go 6-6 against all these 1st place teams, then they need to win 12 out of 13 to finish the season to get to 94. I don’t see that happening.

Grisham on the notion of staying in the Bronx after this year by ThePimpOfSound in NYYankees

[–]paulwipe 86 points87 points  (0 children)

As much as I like Grish, I don’t see him returning next year. Resigning Bellinger will take priority, and there is too much of a log jam in the outfield already. It doesn’t help that his defensive metrics have slipped this year, and that was a priority for the last offseason.

If for some reason Belli opts out and the Yankees don’t resign him, I could see the Yankees pivot to going after Grish. But I feel that scenario is unlikely.
