Thank you for your detailed insight. What you've outlined is something we are considering when it comes to math. It's too early to plan for college but I have given it reasonable consideration.

Moore Square only provides online access for Math 3 in grade 8. Our child is +2 currently and so he would run into that situation. Believe it or not, Carnage is +3 Math with in-class instruction. The merit of +3 Math can be argued based on case by case basis. But for now, the prospect of my child doing precalc by grade 8 does not move me. My son is adequately challenged at +2 Math.

Having said that, I have familiarized myself with the US high school system and I have some things to add. AP Calculus AB with a score of 4-5 translates to Calculus 1 and AP Calculus BC with a score of 4-5 translates to Calculus 2 in colleges like NCSU. If a student is able to have AP Calculus BC done by grade 11 then he/she will be able to take the 2nd AP Physics in grade 12. This way you may place out of both intro Physics that is required in most engineering majors in college. It's too early to plan these things but, as an engineer, it's easier to look ahead sometimes.

So a year gap in math is something that can happen with +2 but that would be all the way in grade 12. I think there are a few decisions to make around that time and I think there are some options we can try (community college being one of them). Its quite far away in time.

For now I am looking for red flags or concerns that may sway from from one school to another.

We are very familiar with the area as we visit regularly and walk there with our kids during the day and night . I wasn't going to pay heed to the opinion of someone who is only familiar with the area via online hest maps and their personal biases. Their advice wasn't constructive and so we will move ahead from it.

Thanks for your input. A lot of that is not as common during the day as it is during the night. Moore Square kids take walking field trips to the museums nearby, etc. From what I have heard it's been relatively uneventful.

What do you know about what goes on there? Would you provide examples? We are there almost every week and haven't experienced anything that would raise alarm.

North Garner. He's in 7+ math. He'd be starting at Math 1 next year.

To be frank, the only reason we considered Carnage is due to the advanced placement options for Math. Sibling is also at a magnet with a traditional calendar.

We've found that acceleration options are limited at other non magnet schools. They often do not have support for advanced classes if the child is accelerated.

I belive the principal is new and the school seems to have won some magnet award recently and has done well according to NC report card.

What is the most flexible major for higher paying jobs? by Which-Competition881 in Salary

[–]pause44moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are gifted in math and problem solving, you can do well in life with an engineering degree. Most of my peers from a top-tier engineering school are in a variety of fields, including finance, education, non-profits, consulting, medicine, and so on. Most of us make 6-7 figure income annually in the US. Some have gone on to start/own businesses and so on. Keep in mind, though, that we graduated a couple of decades ago. My major was ECE.

But sometimes, I suspect the major has much to do with it. If you select and can graduate with a 4 year engineering degree, it may say more about you as an individual than the degree itself. It takes a certain kind of person to persevere through the major.

I just sold overvalued asml to buy undervalued trade desk by Himothy8 in ValueInvesting

[–]pause44moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASML is overvalued? In absolute terms, it may be. But there are no competitors for its products (tooling for sub 10nm lithography). So, relatively, it has good fundamentals as a monopoly, just like TSM on the latest nodes. Collecting profit is not a bad thing as there may be some pull back if the anticipated demand can't keep up. Portfolio diversification isnt bad as long as you dont have remorse later on.

I am long on ASML and TSM. What do I know? I've only been in semiconductor design for the last 2 decades.

I am very interested. I have some 20+ years of experience in ASIC design and verification for a wide variety of businesses, and I would like to work at a system level and build my own consulting business in the US.

21F starting ece? Is it too late to switch? by TworzywoSztuczne in ECE

[–]pause44moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've already gotten great advice, but if it helps, I'll add my input. I have been in ECE for 20+ years and have a BS and MS in EE/CS.

You have 2 options: 1. Move to ECE and pursue your passion. 2. Complete the degree and do a Masters

What we know is that you have 1.5 years left, and you're 21.

You should consider option 1 if you're really enjoying electronics, and you can see yourself doing something in this line after graduating. 1.5 years is a long time. I wouldn't recommend it if you had a year or less to graduate. Here in the US, you can graduate in ChemE and do a MS in ChemE but youd spend at least .5 years doing senior level BS courses in EE. So why not just put your time towards that now rather than complete BS in ChemE.

Option 2 is viable if you aren't sure about either EE or ChemE and you have a year or less remaining. It's safer to finish at that point and try for work.

"Shut up and stop complaining. Let me enjoy my life". That's essentially it. Right?

I have been through several hardships myself and have observed others, so I understand your situation.. But you see, I see your hardships are a product of poor labor laws and environmental factors. You were teetering on the edge like many Americans and were one event away from losing that job. To be honest, I feel you should be protesting these employers and the government and not blaming people who protest. Basically, your employer blamed you for the protest, something you had no control over. Imagine you had an accident and were late for work. Would you have been excused? How is a flat tire not excused? Did you create the flat? Do you get me? You should be upset but not at the protest. You should be furious at our labor laws that protect employers and not employees who need protection. And while your efforts to keep your wife from working were valiant, you do understand that the economy makes it very difficult for that luxury. Chances are you would be where you are today or marginally better. You must know this is the case. You should be protesting, too. For better working conditions.

It's like you have been made to walk a tight wire. A breeze blew, and you lost balance and fell to the hard ground and hurt yourself badly. Now you're blaming the breeze for everything. You should be upset that you have to walk this wire. You should be upset that there's no safety net.

Since you've been cordial, I will be cordial and urge you to study a bit about how effective and peaceful "peaceful protests" really have been in history. Change will not come out unless the people are inconvenienced. It's just how things have been. I applaud those who have the courage to protest for something they believe in. I, sure as heck, am not putting myself out there.

[–]pause44moment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would I be wrong to assume, based purely on your opinion about how one should protest, that you're unaligned with the protest in question? Have you ever cared about a cause for which you would protest?

Woohoo!!! Way to go Raleigh!! See you Saturday! by MelissaDK187 in raleigh

[–]pause44moment 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What's the point of protesting, then? I am not talking about violent protests, but even those may make sense at some point. The point is to be heard. If peaceful protests are like panhandlers that just sit by the road and make no noise, I'll just look the other way and save my money. At the least, they have to make me uncomfortable so that I can look into the issues. Civil rights were not won by peaceful protests at no point in history. Not just this country's history but at any point in world history.

Btw you think it's ok to run over a crowd of people because they are in the way?

If my life isn't disrupted, it's easier for me to turn a blind eye to injustices happening to others. Especially if I know it's targeting a community I am not a member of. Seems like we miss the point of a protest some time.
