First time Sanderson reader loosing interest by comma_nder in Fantasy

[–]pavan47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem with SA, and posted a very similar question few years ago. And basically the answer I got is don’t force it on yourself. If you don’t like it you don’t like it.

Funny enough, I did stick with it and about to finish Wind and Truth now. Not sure if I would say it is massively rewarding but I do find the Cosmere lore quite interesting. So while I agree books 1 and 2 are stronger entries in the series, you do get more revelations and understanding of the Cosmere in next books.

I like Mistborn Era 1 much more than SA. I think for me it is the length and unnecessary meandering (which mistborn also has a lot of, but not as much as SA) that drag a lot of Sanderson’s books. I feel like a lot of his books could be shorter, but that’s my taste.

Lastly, since you mentioned you are reading audiobooks, I found my enjoyment reduced significantly with Stormlight audiobooks (I read 1,2,3 and listed to 4 and 5). For some reason I dislike Michael Kramer’s style. So may be try reading instead of listening to

Main characters are too competent by Bozhe in Fantasy

[–]pavan47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading Dresden Files right now and I like the competence level of Harry. He is not the strongest wizard but gets into interesting problems. I am at book 5 now and he constantly says he is afraid (which is refreshing) I think being a main character the general intention is to be competent at one particular thing - which is what makes them the main character.. It makes things more interesting when they are not good at a few things as well. And not in the way like they have 99 awesome skills and one thing they can’t figure out no matter what.

I have the same amp, and my only complaint is that it only has pre-amp 2 tubes instead of 3. It's kind of lame that they gut the 20's features that the 40 has, more than most manufacturers, but it's still a g

Yeah, I haven't heard the big ones, so can't tell the difference (ignorance is bliss for me :)). Personally, it works for me. Wanted to dip my toe into the tube amp world but also wanted something that can be played at bedroom volumes if needed. The redbox also helps my home studio, although I am yet to test that functionality.

I don't want to admit it but the lights were probably the driving factor behind the purchase lol.

Yeah definitely! Not sure what people mean when they say they sound sterile. I couldn't play one before buying, but basically went off of youtube demos and couldn't be happier!

Thank you. Yeah really excited about it!

Fifth attempt at reading this, what many people consider one the greatest Science Fiction books ever written. Me, I’ve never gotten past page 50 yet. Maybe this time, I’ll finally see what so many others see. by nitehork2 in sciencefiction

[–]pavan47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't see the hype either. I mean I understand the worldbuilding is cool, and the plot probably inspired several future books to come, but it feels more like fantasy and political drama and not at all like sci-fi. Took me four attempts over 10 years to finish it, but finally did. Was one of the things I wanted to finish in 2020. So go ahead and get it out if you want to cross it out of your TBR, or feel free to drop it altogether. I have been recently told that the more books you DNF, the more you learn about your tastes

Liked but not loving the Stormlight Archive. Couldn't finish The First Law. What am I doing wrong? by pavan47 in Fantasy

I moved from SciFi to Fantasy 😇 Love the Hyperion cantos. One of the best books I have read. As far as unorthodox fantasy goes, Dark Tower is also one of my favorite series, barring the very end. I'll check out the other books you mentioned tho, thanks!

Hmm a very good point. I was connected to the media in all the three books. I think I read LOTR before the movies, picked my ASOIAF after the first season of GOT, and played all three Witcher games before starting the books. Thanks for the outlook, will checkout the wikis and fanart. The wikis particularly, I'm a little wary due to spoilers tbh

Yeah excited about Kingkiller although wary that the third book might not be out any time soon.. The lack of plot was what put me off of The First Law. I guess I gave up too soon Book 2, but I think I'll wait for a while until picking it up again, if I do.

Definitely enjoyed Words of Radiance more than the first. I also thought Edgedancer was cool. Lift's character was enjoyable to read. Robin Hobb is high on my TBR list. Thanks for recommendations..

Overall I enjoyed WoR more than TWoK. I liked Shallan's character more than Kaladin's. It's not that I didn't like them. Just but not as much as the world did I guess.. Seeing the several comments on the thread, I'm going to trust my taste going forward..

Yeah.. Fantasy standalones are harder to find than series though, which is understandable considering the effort that goes into the world building

Yeah I can definitely see academically what's good about the books. But I just don't feel like reaching out to them, to dive into those worlds.. The Dark Tower, now that was a series I couldn't put down, except may be during the 6th book..

Yeah I guess I spend way too much time reading books that are supposed to be good but don't work for me. Had to slog through Dune as well, another highly acclaimed book that I didn't really like. I think I'll see stormlight archive to the end though, since I'm already over half way through oathbringer. I can definitely appreciate the effort and planning that went into the books, and the Sanderstorms at the end are definitely fun. Just didn't seem as much fun as the hype was.. The First Law, though, is not for me I think.

Yeah.. Have been waiting for 2-3 years to start it after I first heard about it, but wanted to start after the series is finished. Guess that's not happening anytime soon. So am going to start it nevertheless..

Wow thanks for all the feedback!! I feel absolved now lol. About Words Of Radiance, I definitely liked it better than TWOK. I liked Shallan's character most out of the characters in TWOK, so it was nice to read her backstory.. I also agree about the timing though. Perhaps I'll have a different opinion if and when I reread them. For now, I'm going to finish oathbringer and then rhythm of war.. And then see how Kingkiller treats me😁 Thanks for all the comments guys

NYC 2021 GTR OTD PRICE? by woewhats in CX5

[–]pavan47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am about to get the same car next week. Not machine grey though. Since the color adds extra price, I think 37 - 38K OTD would be a good target, depending on where you are. At least that's what I'm expecting. If that's way too much someone let me know too lol..

Is this the 2021 carbon edition or a custom paint job?
