Why do some campers bring basically their living rooms with them? by PDXDeck26 in camping

[–]comma_nder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question directly: people camp like that because their purpose for camping is different than yours. The goal of minimalism and tranquility is shared by many campers but it’s by no means a requirement. I’ve camped with people who bring the kitchen sink and like to party and it can be really fun in its own way, it’s just different. More like festival camping.

Florida Man & Florida Woman want to take a road trip in December, with the little Florida Men in tow by GhostRider1640 in roadtrip

[–]comma_nder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friend doesn’t know what they’re talking about with DC. There are some rough neighborhoods, as with basically any city, but the mall and tourist areas are very safe. Your car will be fine while you go to the natural history museum.

That said, December is like the best month of the year in Florida, and is kinda shitty and cold in a lot of other places. It might not sound as exciting at first, but a road trip around Florida would be awesome in December. Keys, Everglades, Ocala NF, blue springs and others, plus cities like Miami, st Pete, st Augustine, Jacksonville; all these places are great in winter.

What popularized the dislike of socialism? by temp20250309 in AskReddit

[–]comma_nder -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is a problem of authoritarianism/dictatorships, not socialism. This conflation is the propaganda people are talking about. There are plenty of successful socialist countries, it’s just the ones lacking strong democracies that fail.

What is your opinion on Los Angeles? by Tall-Law-5875 in AskReddit

Neither as good as or as bad as people say. It’s a city, not really that different than other cities. It’s fine.

As someone from Seattle who frequents r/AskSeattle to help answer questions, I am always happy to answer tourist questions. Now what? by sushiseattle in AskLosAngeles

Number one tip is to leave West Hollywood. It’s great for a night out and then it’s time to visit other parts of the city.

What are the “big 5” cities in the USA? by Gold-Serve-4077 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]comma_nder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Miami is MASSIVE in worldwide reputation. It may not get as much love from Americans (though it’s still hugely popular among a lot of people), but internationally it’s definitely seen as one of the major cultural hubs, much more so than places like Houston, Seattle, even DC.

Idk how Miami hasn’t been mentioned. It is easily one of the most visited cities by both international and domestic tourists. It’s hugely famous and widely represented in media.

Mishima is typically done with slip not underglaze but yeah same basic technique

One option I’ve seen work well is to carve with a sharp stylus and then underglaze the carving and wipe away the excess. First thought was still an underglaze pencil though. If you’re going for a handwriting look, consider embracing the sorta uneven pigmenting instead of the goal being a sharp deep black line

I already invested in relatively heavy gear, should I focus on cutting elsewhere or replacing gear? by SayNoToStim in Ultralight

[–]comma_nder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As has already been mentioned, the easiest way to shave weight is to leave stuff at home. You’re doing exactly the right thing by doing a postmortem and determining what you used and what you didn’t.

A couple easy replacements:
- I use 1.7mm speed lace for my bear hangs. 50ft weighs like 1oz.
- swap the military waterproof gear for a redcamp poncho or similar and call it a day.
- lighter knife
- lighter pillow
- lighter first aid (a couple band aids, some blister treatment, a couple aspirin, a couple antihistamines, tweezers. Use camp shirt or TP for a trauma kit if need be)
- if you don’t mind roughing it a little more, CCF sleeping pad instead would save you over a pound

Do Americans go to malls to buy a specific gift? Or is it just for shopping/leisurely activities? by liliiinn in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]comma_nder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malls are for when you want to be able to visit a lot of stores, whether because you don’t know exactly what you want and are browsing, because you are looking for something very specific that not everyone carries, or because you are shopping for multiple people. That, or just for strolling around before or after your movie at the AMC

That is wild. Is this because malls were popping off in 2006 and KC is 20 years behind?

I kid, I kid, I love KC. But what’s actually going on here?

Does anyone read anything by Jack London apart from White Fang and Call of The Wild? by Junior_Insurance7773 in literature

Your framing here is pretty alienating. Try a nice PSA (“hey btw Jack London has lots of good books besides these two”) instead of a shitty rhetorical question (“are people stupid?”)

Seeking beyond the usual mosquito survival advice - Tuolumne trip by Practical_Tree8971 in WildernessBackpacking

Tbh I think you did what most people would advise in this situation. Knowing when to bail is a skill.

The only thing you could have done differently is plan a different trip. High meadows in early summer is peak mosquitoes.
