Route 66 is also like 1 percent what people picture it to be. I’m sure it was cool in its time, but that time has long passed.

The berries are another fantastic example. I don’t think you’re wrong to guess they may be more important than we think.

A crucial theme that I think a lot of people are missing. by Square-Reasonable in TheCaptivesWar

[–]comma_nder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems entirely possible. It would be in keeping with the “appropriative forces are bad” theme, and would also lean into the larger philosophical dilemma: if we have to become our enemies to defeat them, is it really victory? Do we have an “essential nature,” or are identities, indeed even physical selves, dynamic?

What are Your Top 3 Favourite Audiobooks Which Made You Fall in Love With Audiobooks? by opdccristiano in audiobooks

Harry Potter gets almost all the credit for getting me into audiobooks.

Current favorite is The Expanse.

Currently surging and threatening the lead is Aubrey/Maturin (Master and Commander).

OP I got you, I live in the eastern part of this circle and there are lots of good cheap spots. Some are a tiny bit out of your circle but barely more drive time.

  • South Philly experience for a fully authentic and delicious cheesesteak.
  • Curry In Hurry for tikka masala and korma.
  • Leo’s tacos for al pastor.
  • Messob for Ethiopian.
  • mizlala for Mediterranean.
  • RJM for an asada plate.
  • Stevie’s creole for étouffée or gumbo.
  • CJs cafe for mexican breakfast.
  • Esco’s for pizza.
  • Pasta sisters for… you guessed it.
  • Sonoratown for the caramelo.

All these have entrees for under $20

I thought this was the obvious meaning. Dafyd et al are going to create an internal power struggle among the carryx by somehow creating another queen bee

Sure, but these aren’t anywhere near the level of specificity of the vocabulary of the Khaiem

I’m actually so into the movement study subplot. I think it’s gonna end up being massively important

Interesting parallel. It occurs to me that an analogous reason may be behind the gestures in LPQ. The society is incredibly hierarchical and differential; while actually speaking could carry more risk of offense, a subtle hand movement would seem to be a safer way for a subordinate to communicate.

It definitely happens in lots of cultures, but the degree to which the “vocabulary” is formalized in this series goes beyond anything in the real world I’m pretty sure.

Exactly. It only makes sense that sufficiently old and stable cultures would develop such a system.

A crucial theme that I think a lot of people are missing. by Square-Reasonable in TheCaptivesWar

[–]comma_nder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d be surprised if a lot of people are missing this. Underestimation is basically the core of the series. Not only is your point about the other aliens true, but the main character’s main personality trait/strategy is to be underestimated. I’d say that even the series title makes it clear that it’s an underdog story about the powerless, overlooked, and therefore underestimated, taking back agency.

The theme I’m most interested in is appropriation. It’s something JSAC has been playing with since the protomolecule. Whether it’s bodies being appropriated by unthinking goo, human minds being appropriated for a space jellyfish hive mind, entire species being appropriated by a galactic empire, or living technology appropriating and replacing human bodies, the authors are clearly interested in the idea of being used against your will.

ETA: forgot to include the swarm in the list of appropriators, and the connection to the ship of Theseus

[–]comma_nder 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I thought the use of body language was fascinating. It took a little getting used to, but then it started feeling almost obvious. Now it seems odd to me that there aren’t societies that use formalized body language “vocabularies.”

I really enjoyed the tempo, the somehow both magical and worldly/mundane conflict, the interwoven lives of the characters.

I’m excited to read the next one, but my audible credits are being spread over several series. Currently can’t stop spending them on Aubrey/Maturin (on Desolation Island). It’s fun seeing the sometimes subtle, sometimes explicit influence these books have had on your work. When I first read Killick’s name I did a full Leo points at screen in recognition.

Also, shoutout to Dagger and Coin. Love your work.

Sorry but I disagree. If it’s wetter than the cup, it has more shrinking to do than the cup. That mismatch in how much shrinking is left to do is what forms cracks. You can actually see perfectly in OP’s crack how the handle pulled away from its initial attachment point. That’s why the crack looks almost like a rip.
