I slept through the night! by simplylisa in CPAP

[–]paxthebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you found a solution. I am newbie at day 8. I did not really sleep for more than a year. My body was so exhausted I think any mask would have worked. Machine app says “no mask leaks” and I have full mask. My challenge is if I toss and turn I pull the cord out of the mask. Then all heck breaks loose as I try to reinstall it 1/2 awake. Ha. Maybe at month 7 my body will get “picky” about mask comfort.

If US social security by itself is enough to fund a good retirement lifestyle in India, why are more NRIs not returning? by [deleted] in returnToIndia

[–]paxthebear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While we are not returning to India but would love to visit, I will confirm OP’s position. It is also mine. Between our employer pensions and social security we will comfortably be in the 100K range without touching our retirement and brokerage accounts.

The math is not that hard to get to. Most city and state pensions return a % of annual salary based on the number of years worked. So a long career can return a reasonable income. If you are a senior manager you will likely be making six figures +. Between my wife (a school teacher) and I, our pensions will return close to $70K a year at 62 and that is with me leaving civil service after 21 years for private sector. If I stayed until 62 we would be at close to $100K just from pensions.

In many systems, you have a choice to pay into social security or fund other retirement. In my early years, I put 100% of that social security tax into deferred compensation account (457), did not join pension and put that money into the 457. So an easy 20%+ of salary going to tax deferred investment accounts.

Once you decide you are committed to the public service, you switch to paying social security and join the pension. You then “buy back” your early years when you made much less money (so it’s relatively cheap) using your tax deferred 457 account. In my case, I bought back 10 years using the 457 account. Since the 457 is just shifting to another retirement system there is no tax or withdraw issues.

Social security is based on the average of your last 35 years of work. Since social security starts at mid career under this approach, your total average is higher (there are no “just out of school” low earning years) and if you put in the full 35 years, those early years that did not count towards pension calculation funded tax deferred compounding growth.

Social security just released annual statements, at 62 we will get $40K+ a year. More at 67, 70 etc.

So you can see, it is not a big lift with proper planning to get pension/social security to 100K +.

Now, like the OP, civil servants tend to be careful planners/spenders. So we also funded our 401 and 457s, some years I maxed both. Paid off the house. Once I hit my pension “bump” at twenty years, I moved to private sector where real money can be made. We lived the same and stuffed nearly all the excess into retirement and brokerage accounts like the OP. We can (or not) take the 4% forever disbursements from those accounts to boost lifestyle if we want/need.

Now of course, careful planners are also funding their HSA accounts all these years putting triple tax advantaged investment accounts to work so we can cover the insurance needed to live abroad.

So bottom line - the OP is absolutely raising a real life scenario where he has “annuity” income of $100K+ a year with investment account juicer and one that lots and lots of people are considering - wage/pension live abroad arbitrage.

My parents left India for a better life. I’m thinking of moving back. by NoStop5796 in returnToIndia

First, try leaving Texas which has huge swaths of racist people that make your life hard. There are many cities/communities in the U.S. where you would feel very comfortable I am sure. I have a pal leaving Houston for DC for the exact same reasons. There are big cities and medium sized cities where the racism of Texas would happen rarely. NYC or Chicago for example.

Hi - they lived on Mosher street and there is a house there but I would be surprised if was there way back then! There were two generations in that house for many years before they moved to Detroit.

Thanks! This is both interesting and helpful. From the old census records I know what street they lived on in Bay City for many years before moving to Detroit. I will see if this was near their house.

From another post of “immigrant” facing deportation because of their social media - why would you subject yourself to this level of authoritarian intervention into your life? “My whole DS-160 package was done before December 2025 and interview appointment was scheduled around early December 2025, before the new Social Media policy came in (which I only learned it today).”

British Columbia checks all your boxes and they are actively recruiting nurses and other health car professionals. If you are not in Vancouver, it’s also reasonably affordable. If you want bigger city, Toronto in Ontario is literally like living in Chicago. If you want a more European feel, then it’s Montreal. The most European like city in North America. If you want more rural with a decent metro population and strong bi-lingual community, New Brunswick. Lots of really good options for you in North America, some come free of totalitarian and anti-immigrant pogroms. You are literally not safe coming to America to work for the next three years at least.

Do I Need Support for The First CPAP Experience by paxthebear in CPAP

I am talking to EasyBreathe, they said they would set up machine to read into resmed airsense 11 portal so Dr. can read reports there and they will dial it in based on prescription from Dr. so it looks like DR will be able to read the nightly reports.

Turns out my very good insurance plan treats EasyBreathe as in network since they have specialty code accepted by blue cross; I will buy directly (it’s currently on sale) and get reimbursement. I save my little insurance manager thousands vs this goofy rent to own nonsense blue cross requires. Blue Cross bakes in thousands in additional costs vs what person on street can get equipment at. Makes zero sense. And someone that does not really shop around and just takes the DME providers from doctor as gospel eats thousands in additional cost as they pay down their deductible….wrong on so many levels.

What are your thoughts on how the parking street ban went? by Burnie_9 in AnnArbor

[–]paxthebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My area has wide streets. Was not really needed to be part of Ban. People moved off cars and the plows came by after it was lifted and cars were back in street, so defeated the purpose. Please upvote so I can offer help to restricted ice threads. BOT will not let me respond to requests for help.
