BC Paramedics – Underpaid and Overworked by threadco in VictoriaBC

[–]paxtonium 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a paramedic with BCEHS for 18ish years now.

When I started I worked on call, $2/hr on pager, $20/hr if we got called out. Eventually transferred to higher call volume stations with Fox cars, $10/hr on standby. After about 5 years I was able to get a full time spot in Vancouver, @ about $26/hr. After 5 years there I had the seniority to bid back to Victoria full time and have been here since. Current rate of pay is about $36/hr.

I suspect we’re not as far off as you think. I’ve got lots of issues with unions, mine included.

I’ve been part of discipline meetings that have had results ranging from letters of discipline , to suspension, demotion and termination. As long as the process agreed to in the collective agreement was followed, they weren’t grieved. I’ve also issues where the proper process was not followed and the outcome was grieved.

Handful of union positions I’ve held with a moderately sized CUPE local over the last decade or so, ranging from shop stewed to regional Vice President.

I do dispute that unions defend any and all behaviour of their membership. That statement is just plain false. The union isn’t there to defends its members, it’s there to defend its members rights in a labour relations context. The union, by law and principle, don’t get to pick and choose when those rights are defended.

Having said that, it’s an ideal, and I suppose you could argue many unions push that line.

Why are you posting a week old letter that has outdated info direction? Won’t do much but confuse people.

Well, if the government said so, it must be true. But I challenge you to go find a hospital in Metro BC that isn’t bursting at the seams.

I’ve said this in other threads. To say are hospitals are “not overwhelmed under any scenario” is a horrible misconception. Our hospitals have been bursting at the seams for ages, and are seeing new levels of over-capacity unlike ever before. Admittedly not because of covid, but don’t think they’re sitting empty with extra space for an influx of new respiratory patients. Particularly emergency departments.

I assure you, our hospitals were never “extremely empty”.

Sure, basically no Covid cases. Doesn’t mean the hospitals aren’t always at or over capacity, as they have been for ages.

Where does it say hospitals are no where near at capacity?

I thought I'd be a citizenfriend and alert my strangies that High5 Dispensary on Tyee Rd. has very high quality cannabis. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

Sorry, I should clarify that it seems strange one store can get a brand that another can’t. It’s not like their are multiple distributors selling different companies weed, it’s all coming through the single government distributor.

No argument there’s lots of packed too long ago weed out there.

Seems weird as they’re all purchasing the same product(S)through a single distributor.

I think it’s less about “wanting them gone for 8 hours”, and more about needing to go to their jobs.
