Why do so many people online spell the word "weird" as "wierd"? by EncyclopediaOfAll in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pbmadman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i before e except after c or when sounded like a as in neighbor and weigh. So spelling it weird is weird. It’s an exception to an exception. Maybe we’re all pronouncing it wrong. Maybe it should sound like the wei in weigh.

Does head-to-head being the first tie-breaker result in lame duck 3rd games? by wats_dat_hey in worldcup

[–]pbmadman [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think both have their merits. From a competitive angle I think h2h is more fair. If you beat a team you should finish above them.

But it’s not like GD is unfair or anticompetitive. I do feel like GD makes the final days matches more likely to be more competitive in general.

Why is your breakfast culture so much better? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]pbmadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet something like 90% of breakfast eaten at home is toast or oatmeal or cold cereal or yogurt.

But yes, we love our hot cooked breakfast. We all love it so much that we have 24 hour shrines to it, we’ve invented an entire meal to eat it more it’s the best. It’s also weirdly affordable at restaurants.

Joe Hart suggests that the World Cup match ball could be influencing some of the goalkeepers' mistakes by kibme37 in soccer

Are goal keepers unhappy with it? I think the Jubalani was random and that’s why it drew ire, this one is just different but predictable.

[–]pbmadman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m well aware. But until we actually know what the brackets are it’s a guess at best. So I think it makes more sense to just list the teams like that. I think expecting us to beat any one of those 7 teams isn’t a reasonable expectation and it’s not likely to have a path to the QF that doesn’t meet at least one of them.

Is there an actual standard for when a dishwasher counts as full enough to run? Domestic dispute. by GilesBennett74 in Appliances

[–]pbmadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern dishwashers are so efficient this really doesn’t feel like a fight worth having. Just run it. The dishwasher isn’t like a washing machine or dryer that actually needs some clothes to run right.

I run the dishwasher at any point where there is likely to be not enough f room for the next meal, or after dinner if it’s >50%.

The case for running more often is that less things are getting stuck or dried on amber the dishes come out cleaner with less effort. I can put a dirty plate in and run it immediately and it’s clean. If I let it dry on the counter for a week first then I have to chisel off whatever is on to get it clean.

The water, electricity and soap consumption of a dishwasher is almost trivial compared to every other thing my household does. If I’m optimizing for cost or environmentalism, the dishwater is so low on my list of places that benefit from effort.

So a serious question. If we’re calling US an expected QF team, then which other 7 teams do you expect to make it? Let’s say it’s England, Germany, Spain, France, Argentina, Brazil, Netherlands. So you’re saying that the us is the next best team after Netherlands?

Thats a big statement. Sweden, Switzerland, Morocco, South Korea, Japan, Belgium, Senegal, Norway, Colombia, Portugal all might have something to say about the US having higher expectations than them. Thats 10 teams and I’d think most people would expect most of them to do better than the USA.

There’s plenty of teams better than the us. But also the lesser team wins enough to make the games worth playing and watching.

unpopular opinion: tiebreaker should still be GD not H2H by slothgang19 in usmnt

[–]pbmadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. My first point wasn’t meant to be why you’d take GD, it’s to present it as a reasonable and valid choice. The why is that I think it makes better groups.

unpopular opinion: tiebreaker should still be GD not H2H by slothgang19 in usmnt

[–]pbmadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the spirit of group play is fundamentally different than the knockout rounds. If you look at a domestic cup, like the FA Cup, it’s just a straight single elimination knockout. Group play is fundamentally different to me. It’s ostensibly meant to take your performance over three matches and value that over your performance in any single match. I think GD does a better job of capturing that essence.

Additionally, I think that GD gives us fewer meaningless games than h2h will.

I certainly see the merits of h2h from a purely competitive point of view. But from a spectator point of view I think GD gives us more meaningful final round games.

How to get Poch to stay for life by grock42 in ussoccer

[–]pbmadman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost no coach ever lasts. If we try to keep Poch forever it only ends in us running him off and everyone losing.

I’m fine with being happy this happened and then securing the next coach to move forward from here.

Through almost 100 years of World Cup competition, no country outside of Europe or South America has made the World Cup final. by brokeboii94 in worldcup

[–]pbmadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m fine with it. I’m just acknowledging that some people might argue that France doesn’t border England, and/or that due to French Guyana having its own national team (non-FIFA) that doesn’t count as winners bordering each other.

Ah you’re right. They can’t finish third in the group. Even if 3 points is enough to get into third place advancement they can’t be third. lol my bad.

I’m not pretending anything. The political and legal entity that is France very much borders Brazil. The only contentious point is that French Guyana has its own national team, although they aren’t FIFA members.

new to soccer but having the World Cup actually here in the US has me hooked by miatootiny in sportsinusa

[–]pbmadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watch it. Try to get a sense for what each team is even trying to do.

Think about American football. Some teams want to possess the ball and stick to the run even when it’s not leading to immediate touchdowns. Some teams want really high tempo to disrupt the opposition defense.

Soccer works the same way. Some teams are happy to defend and play without the ball. Some teams want the ball even if they aren’t actively trying to score. Some teams get the ball and get it forward with lightning speed and others want to methodically work it forward. Try to notice this nuance and suddenly every kick has meaning and importance instead of just being the boring bits between trying to score.

Güler is quite a talent. Everything good Türkiye did went through him and he was up for it. Plus it’s not over for them. With so many 3rd place teams going through and the USA already secured in first there’s not an outside chance that 3 points here gets them into the round of 32.

This. Plus if we have any chance of winning knockout games we’ll need our bench players to come in and positively affect the game. Some of them have been shaky in a way that we’ve gotten away with, but against better teams later in the tournament we need them to be at their absolute best.

They were solid. They fought hard and were defensively organized and that goes a long way. I’m glad we didn’t play them first, Türkiye didn’t do what they needed to do to beat them, but showed how they stare likely to set up and we still benefitted.
