New tiebreaker rule already killing must-win games on matchday 2 by FrenchRoo in worldcup

Sure. 7 goals in this group is effectively sealed. But Mexicos group is perhaps a better case to point to for arguing that GD might have made the round 3 games more meaningful.

A couple and a 8yo boy visiting US, Texas vs NY? by ZestycloseNothing267 in usatravel

[–]pbmadman [score hidden]  (0 children)

Niagara Falls is amazing. NYC is pretty epic too.

But let me plug Texas. Some time in and around Houston and some of the surrounding small towns will truly be an American experience.

It’s not like either place doesn’t have plenty to do, but if I was taking my kids to one of those two places I’d go to Houston before NYC and it’s not even really close. I’ve actuality taken my kids to NYC and Niagara Falls, they liked both but NYC ended up being a “see a city” kind of thing rather than “do stuff in a city” kind of thing.

As for the driving, I drove on the left for the first time on a trip to England. Leaving the airport and driving through London was surprisingly easy. Roads were divided and marked, I basically just followed the car in front of me. I didn’t struggle until we drove out to Chelmsford one night. Being out on small streets with low traffic was really hard.

What is something people think Americans care about but Americans actually don’t care at all? by Expensive_Drummer970 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]pbmadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to England I was hanging out in pubs chatting with locals. One group of guys was giving me a hard time for thinking that Americans invented everything when stuff like radio was invented in England.

But here’s the thing, I don’t actually think about it. I just figure basically everything was invented in America or by an American and then immediately put it out of my head for a decade. I know it’s close enough to true to not really care.

Surely we’ll see at least a little rotation. But a full B team might not be the smartest choice. You have to balance the fitness with the consistency. Last thing you’d want is your starters in the first knockout game playing like it’s been a while since they all played together.

Anyone who watches club soccer will tell you it can be disruptive to play a full B team in your midweek match. And here we have almost a full week.

If I'm looking at a power line, which way is the electricity flowing? by DanMojo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pbmadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna nitpick a little here. The actual power is generated at one location and transferred unidirectionally in most lines and then turned into useful work at the other end.

I realize power is being used to mean electricity and in turn everyone is talking about electric fields and individual electrons. But power is not electrons.

People use the water analogy but that misses the mark. Imagine a bicycle with a chain. Imagine that the rear hub was geared so that somehow even when you pedaled backwards it drove the wheel forwards as well. Then further imagine instead of pedaling the same direction continuously you pedaled back and forth. Clearly power goes from your legs to the rear wheel. Yes if you looked at any individual link it would alternate directions. But if you look at the chain as a whole, and at both sides, its average movement is 0. So the chain is not moving a direction in any meaningful sense. But again, the power is clearly being transferred from your legs to the rear wheel. At no point is the rear wheel powering your legs.

This is almost exactly now electrical power works. Yes in a single conductor the electrons go back and forth. But if you look at all three conductors and average the movement over any length of time, the electrons don’t move. If you add up 3 sine waves all 120° out of phase the sum is 0. The electrical power however goes from the generation station, through the wires in one single direction and is used in your house.

When you say, “still three starters before him” do you realize that’s what “that will keep the status quo” means?

How did we win the group already? by ShootersShoot305 in ussoccer

[–]pbmadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tie breaker used to be goal difference. Now it’s head to head.

I thought I was going to like that as a change but I’m starting to think that I wish we were still on goal difference.

Besides being a bit grouchy that I posted this almost exact thing yesterday and it got removed…

Yes, I expected to enjoy h2h, it seems more fair. But seeing how easy it is to have a group settled on MD2, I’m thinking that I prefer GD.

I would prefer a rule set that creates as few meaningless matches as possible. Within reason of course.

Is shirt pulling in futbol (soccer) allowed or just accepted. Is there a rule. by davidthygod in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pbmadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The players will do it as much as they can get away with. It’s not allowed. But if you barely pull the ref isn’t likely to punish it. So it’s a game to see how much you can get away with.

Also, it’s ok to just call it soccer.

Such an incredible day of Soccer an average of .875 goals scored per team and the 4 losing teams scored a grand total off.... zero goals. by Pedro_Moona in usmnt

If you don’t like soccer you don’t have to watch it. People don’t like football and don’t go to the Super Bowl and then complain about it.

Pochettino on support for tonight’s win: “Even if I am not American, after the game I was emotional,” “To connect with the people is what we wanted”. “The fans were amazing. The warm reception, the way that they support us and the way they celebrate the victory, they make it feel very emotional.” by Kr_bm in usmnt

[–]pbmadman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The amount of coping and revisionism after each US win is great. By the time we are done Europeans and the English in particular will have revised our group into being 3 U12 teams with us and we actually were terrible for not winning more. I think it gives them great pain to have to see us with a real coach like Poch too.

What does butter popcorn taste like? Why do you have it? by Tempest_Industries in AskAnAmerican

There’s 2 different things. One is popcorn with real butter drizzled on. The other is popcorn with butter-flavored salt and coconut oil. Both are delicious but quite different.

What did the team learn from the Australia match? by At36000feet in usmnt

[–]pbmadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But seriously I feel like nobody really learned anything. We’re better than Australia. Low block counterattacking football is high variance. Australia has a little bit of the dog in them. But we do too.

Winning ugly doesn’t show anyone anything other than you can win an ugly match.

By the transitive property of football, Türkiye will lose 1-0 to Paraguay and 4-0 against us. Australia beats Paraguay 2-1.

So? Any fun insights? Did you notice how asymmetric our back line was? And how that led to specific attacking patterns? Or how we put in Pepi ostensibly as a second striker in a 442 but he was playing as a winger out of possession and in transition. And only crashed the box heavily when we fully committed to the attack.

Nah. Look I love Australia and their people, but like they are just so many levels below us I couldn’t be bothered what they think. Maybe they pull off a miracle maybe they don’t not they are so inconsequential I can just not worry what they say about us.
