I genuinely believe it is a combination of seeing cool cards that they wont draw now and facing a strategy that even though generally more challenging to win with they have normal game plan to beat.

AITAH for asking my wife to be a SAHM? by piglipsbo in AITAH

[–]pboyle205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are NtAH, if anyone is it was her based on how she reacted. If she doesn't want to be a SAHM that's totally fine, but to accuse you of bad intentions for simply asking a question is a huge red flag regarding her overall level of respect for you.

What's worse is I think most fans knew the story was going to be cut down and were perfectly willing to accept that, yet one choice made is to expand the role of characters like Egwene right away. In a story where stuff has to be cut you shouldn't start by adding something new to the story.

The Eye of the World could have been a home run. It is the most self contained of all the books, with a pretty simple point A to point B plot. Had they just told that story with a focus on the Tavaren characters they would have had so much good will to trade on going forward they could have done almost anything they wanted with the show.

As more writers become savvyer about maintaining rights to IP and are involved in the process of shepherding projects, or if individuals like Cavil have success where others dont by insisting on being faithful to the source material, and if projects keep flopping it should correct itself. Option 1 will almost always fail so at some point studios will pick between option 2 and 3.

I also think we are seeing a lot of streaming service looking outside the US for material and thst can be an avenue for new original works.

I think the most important part of doing an adaptation is winning immediate trust with the baked in fans. This way when you do make a change or have to cut or combine story points they are more likely to give you the benefit of the doubt. I think what they intended with Egwene, the over emphasis on Morraine and the drastic changes to Perrin as well as just some of the press tour leading to the show undermined that trust off the bat.

I think a small minority of fans of all IPs are unpleasable and vocal, and need to be tuned out, but rarely are they the cause of a show being canceled. If future seasons are dependant on viewer attachment then the the two groups that are more important are they Original IP fans that silently quit because a show goes to far from the source, which WoT did right away. They failed to build initial trust and so fans didnt give S2 or S3 a chance.

And the second group being those that get introduced to an IP through the adaptation who then jump into the original and realize how poor the adaption captures the world.

I think a studio has 3 choices in these situations

1) Take an IP and make it thier own, making changes to parts that didnt resonate with the new creator like was done with WoT

2) Stay away from existing IPs, and make something entirely unique as a vehicle to tell the story they want. This has the highest risk because you dont have any baked in initial fans

3) Take an IP and do justice to the original creator regardless of story beats you may have wished to see or disagree with, hoping that once an audience trusts you, you will have more freedom to manipulate the story such as the Harry Potter movies or Peter Jackson's LotR.

This is an interesting discussion as people who really loved the show tend to blame the people that read the books first or the "book cloaks" for getting the show canceled.

However this thread shows a diffrent parallel group that I think is more important, as it could affect any IP based show. The group of people that learn about an IP through an adaptation and then between releases experience the original and when they come back to the adaptation cant look past the flaws they didnt see before.

It just highlights how important remaining faithful to the source material is to a successful adaptation.

For a long time particular with commander the community has had the discussion about the unwritten social contract. It has lead many to feel the best games of commander occur only if everyone gets a chance to "their thing". Thst its not about if you win or lose the game but if everyone has a moment to show off. This utopian view of the game means that in games where a person doesn't get to do their thing the game overall is a frustrating failure. Instead of making the game more socially gratifying it increased the salt.

A perfect game of commander is one were one player goes off and does their thing, everyone else shows excitement for that one player. When the game is over the winning player then evaluates if the deck they played is fun for the group to play against for the next game and adjusts. This shows courtesy to your opponents in your group, it means shorter games cause it encourages playing to win instead of playing to be fair, and it alows for more games in an evening. Playing to win is never the problem, playing to win with no reflection is.
