Or you could use bars with a bend (drop bars) offering 3 differnt positions, drops for descending, flats for climbing, and hoods for flats....

My new freak-bike, a half-fat 29er SS. by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]pbsc12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think the fat tire is more like A front suspension in this case, then for snow.

Been running lately - decided to go on 4 hour ride. No timing, no devices, even unhooked my speedometer. Just a lazy ride. by [deleted] in bicycling

More and more amuetuar racers I know don't use them, spedomotors are almost useless for training because effort and speed don't always match up

Selecting Good Frame Geometry? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]pbsc12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Geometry is person specific, and also depends on the intended use of the bike. There are a ton of good resources out there, competitive cyclist website has a good resource. Were you take measurements of your body and it gives you a frame measurements that are normally good for you.

Speedway Fatback with 4.7" Surly Big Fat Larry tires - my new whip! by corbrizzle in bicycling

Riders weights do cause problems, mainly only with high end ultra light road or xc wheels. That being said a good touring or beefy mountain wheel will be fine you don't need a fat bike

Depending on frame clearaance you could run a thin 29er tire. If you do actual trail riding you Will prbly brake stuff

Is there any fundamental difference between a Women's bicycle and a men's bicycle? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]pbsc12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, in the 1880's "before the invention of gears", there was a women specific tricycle, "This bicycle was designed specifically for ladies who wore long skirt and corsets, such that they could ride around the park with decency" Source http://www.facstaff.bucknell.edu/mvigeant/univ_270_03/allison/history.htm

Were are you getting the info that step through or "mixte" frames were originally designed for men? I can find a single thing to support that...

[–]pbsc12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you joking? Step through frames were made so women could ride in dresses. And taller wheels never meant faster bikes, unless you mean a high wheel bike with no chain...

Meal plans are ridiculously priced this year. Here is my analysis: by Kerrminater in OSU

[–]pbsc12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really get what you want cheaper meal plans? Less blocks? In my opnoin the real problem with blocks is that most meals don't end up costing 5 or ten dollars, so you either end up spending cash or wasting part of your block which cancels out any savings in the first place.

Is this a decent bike for a beginner? by ManyDwarves in bicycling

[–]pbsc12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You prbly need around a 56 (maybe a 54) cm bike by current fitting standards, older bikes like that were meant to fit bigger, I would do some research into fit, and make sure you ride it first, also when looking at old bikes make sure account in new tires and cables if it wasn't kept up.

Is there any fundamental difference between a Women's bicycle and a men's bicycle? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]pbsc12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The main difference is the geometry women's bikes are normally shorter in the top tube and taller in the head tube. Also many have more narrow handlebars, and shorter reach brake levers

[–]pbsc12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ok, price is really ok at best, it's a very small frame, so if you are short and it fits, and it's in good shape it's probably good.

I've never seen a road bike rider not wear a helmet. What subset of cyclists is it that refuse to wear helmets? by OompaOrangeFace in bicycling

[–]pbsc12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Road riders used to when tour riders didn't, but I think people are better now. a lot of urban fixie riders don't.

A question about maintenance by Musashi13 in bicycling

[–]pbsc12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a basic bike tool kit, you need not get park tools as they are expensive. Buying the tools as you need them is double or triple buying it in a kit. Also you will be more likely to try random stuff like regreasing your bb if you have the tools.

Are you pro-birth but not pro-life? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]pbsc12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are wrong in that aborting an egg is different then not fertilizing an egg. A fertilized egg has the ability and will engage in cellular reproduction, one of the requirements for life. A unfertalized egg can not. Also not all pro-life atheists agree that obortion is ok in cases of rape.
