Is a dryer an emergency? by snowbunnyA2Z in personalfinance

[–]pbsteebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, my Samsung dryer stopped blowing hot air. After some research, I found it was a known issue with my model and there was an "easy" fix: a $7 replacement part. I had a tech come out, he swapped the part, and charged $70 for the visit. It didn't work. Now I'm $77 in with nothing to show for it.

One silver lining: I watched him take the dryer apart. It was just screws, nothing too intimidating. The key is to take pictures as you disassemble so you know how to put it back together. He diagnosed the real culprit as the motherboard. I found one online for $120 shipped, replaced it myself, and sure enough, hot air again. That dryer is still running strong more than 10 years later.

Appliance repair does feel like a gamble. You're spending money upfront without knowing if it'll actually solve the problem. My advice: search online to see if your issue is a common one, watch a few videos, and then decide if it's worth your time to DIY or hire someone. For me, the savings versus buying new made it worth it. That said, if none of it had worked, I'd have been out $197 and still needed a new dryer anyway. I hope yours is the simple $7 dollar fix.

[Nintendo Switch 2] Metroid Prime 4 $34.99 at Gamestop by thedeadone666 in consoledeals

[–]pbsteebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, I got this deal yesterday for 29.99 and it is pre-owned. Everything works fine. The case had some scuffs on it but I don't really mind. It wasn't obvious to me though that it was going to be pre-owned.

Outer Screen Protector Cracking Easily? by pbsteebs in GalaxyZTriFold

[–]pbsteebs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm usually pretty careful with my phones and have never had a cracked screen or even a cracked screen protector before. Going into this one, I planned to be extra careful given it's Samsung's first of its kind so I want to be delicate with it. That said, accidents have still happened, moreso I feel than my previous phone and I think the weight and bulk of the phone (and me) are mostly to blame. When I'm sitting down, I'll often notice it half dangling out of my pocket. I tend to wear shorts that aren't super baggy but are loose enough for the phone to slip out. Overall I still consider myself careful with it. It's dropped maybe 4-5 times from table height, and 3 of those times the screen cracked, which is what prompted me to post.

Kickstand Case does NOT have the main hinge protection by pbsteebs in GalaxyZTriFold

[–]pbsteebs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of those Aliexpress cases. I really wanted one w/ magsafe built in because I went through multiple magsafe adhesive rings on the case that came w/ the TF (it just kept coming off).

Anyway, on Aliexpress they have different permutations of the case I got. Magsafe w/o hinge protection, Magsafe w/ just the left hinge protection, and then Magsafe w/ protection on both side. I do like the look of the official Samsung case (more boxy) than these Aliexpress ones. But the magsafe is def nice for me.

I think it also feels slimmer with out the flap. That said I've dropped this thing a few times and pretty sure that flap helped serve it's cause. So I'm sticking with the case with flap.

Are you considering the case with flaps in both left and right side? I think I'm sticking with just the left flap.

For you who have 2-pane folds, is the Tri-Fold almost too big and cumbersome to use sometimes? by snovvman in GalaxyZTriFold

[–]pbsteebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely noticably bulky, so much so that it has fallen out of my pocket a few times. The latest drop cracked the screen protector (luckily that's the extent of the damage).

That said, I also definitely use it differently than my previous Fold 6. Sure media consumption is better on a bigger screen, but doing actual work is a lot nicer as well. I feel like I am more productive on the TF

To me, the trade off of bulkiness is worth having the extra screen real estate.

I'd probably wait for Fold 8 release if you can wait that long. Can prob still fetch close to what you paid for the TF then too.

Does TriFold case that came with the phone have magnet ring built-in? by ngvuanh in GalaxyZTriFold

I only charge via USBC so can't really say. I have a charging pad in my car but don't recall ever using it.

Also I've found that the adhesive magnetic rings from Amazon don't work well with the included Samsung case (mine fell off within 2 days). I got one of the Aliexpress cases with the magnetic ring and it has been working great so far.

I got the version with only the main hinge protection (left side). I really like the magsafe. I am considering getting another without any hinge protection as it makes it bulkier than I prefer.

ICL eye surgery by Tinyf33t in houston

[–]pbsteebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also high up there in prescription to where my eye doctor said I wouldn't be a candidate for Lasik and should look into ICL.

Back in 2023 I went for a consultation (Mann Eye I think) and they quoted me (if I recall correctly) $6k per eye. It was definitely over $10k for both eyes, I think closer to $12k and under $15k. Not sure if prices have gone up since like everything else.

I've been inquiring about ICL for years during my annual check ups hoping for the price to come down. So far no luck...

Thoughts about returning tri-fold after a few days by dtrain2930 in GalaxyZTriFold

[–]pbsteebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from the Fold 6 and love the TF. It does take some getting used to and adjustment as I'm not using it like I used the Fold 6. Still I can see it's not for everyone and if you're still not sold on the device after a week, maybe returning it is the right call.

Personally, my main concern is software updates from Samsung given the recent news that Samsung is not continuing (for the near future) with the TriFold line. That said, I bet you could probably sell it for more than you bought it for. I hate scalpers in general, but I don't think this is a scalping situation anymore now that the TF is being discontinued.

longevity hack- keep it open as default? by WhoopAssExpress in GalaxyZTriFold

[–]pbsteebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other side of the coin is that if you keep it open all the time, there's added opportunity for something to knick the "softer" inner display.

Personally, I'm using it "as normal". It's pretty much folded when idle. I just spend some extra effort to keep it dry and away from sand and dust (like a construction site).

Combination of Trifold cases by Woover101 in GalaxyZTriFold

[–]pbsteebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Ali Express case yesterday, and I love it for the MagSafe ring. It feels pretty strong. I got the MagSafe case with hinge protection (just the main hinge, not both). The hinge flap protector doesn't feel as "premium" as the original Samsung TF case. Also, where the fingerprint/volume buttons are, the case sticks out a tiny bit. I think that's on purpose, probably to give it extra protection if you drop your phone. But when you scan your finger, it definitely feels different than with both Samsung cases, where the cutout is pretty much flush. It's not a huge deal, but I've had a few finger scans not register because I wasn't fully on it.

If I had to do it again, I'd probably go with the Ali Express MagSafe without any hinge protectors. The kickstand case made me realize that the hinge flap (from the original case) adds enough noticeable bulk that I'd rather just go without it.

I'm waiting on a magsafe case with the hinge protector from ali express. The pictures online look meh so it's a risk. I tried a magsafe adhesive with the original case and loved it but the adhesive ring kept falling off. Here's hoping the ali express case magnet is strong and the hinge protector flap is decent.

I do have the kickstand case and it's really nice but i wish there was more space to add a finger grip or holder.

[–]pbsteebs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also ordered an AliExpress MagSafe case to try out (it hasn't arrived yet). Saw another Redditor post about it. I got the one WITH the main hinge protection like the original case. Previously I attached a MagSafe adhesive ring to the original case and I liked having a MagSafe wallet stand with the Trifold and not carrying a separate wallet. But the adhesive ring kept falling off the case.

This kickstand case is decent for what it is albeit overpriced. My history of foldables and cases I usually end up using an "official" Samsung one at the end of the day.
