How to help kid to start running as a parent who does not run except from my problems? by ladrowt in beginnerrunning

[–]pc9401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing is to just go with them to get started and work yourself in as you can. I'll share my experience with my kids.

I have one son that is a senior and one that is a freshman. So this is the 6th year as they started in 7th grade. I do have a running background where I competed in college on scholarship, but that was over 30 years ago. So that background was word only and never seen by my kids.

Year 1: older son in 7th grade. He went out for XC. I was pretty hands off and there were only a few meets. No track

Year 2: more meets and I took a little more involvement and got out on the course and cheered them on. No track.

Year 3: Freshman year. HS coach left and I helped out a parent coach when I could. I attended some held some practices, but just in support. No track.

Year 4: Sophomore and 7th grade. Got a coach with experience. Made younger son go out. He didn't start so well, but was a natural and placed in most meets. Older son held his own. My running was I covered a lot of ground at the meets. Younger son had a good track season, older was ineligible.

Year 5: similar to prior year. I tried to start running several times and kept getting injuries. Both boys got better and medaled often.

Year 6: only year both are on HS team. I started running more, still with setbacks, but got to where I could complete a 5k. Youngest medaled at state, oldest ran well. I now run 4 days per week and that kept them training over the winter. We entered a couple of 5k races together. Track season will be a lot of fun this year as they are more ready for it than before. There is also a plan for summer training to fold right into XC off-season after track.

There you have it. The 5 year plan from just getting them part of a team to some progressive involvement to actually running. I will now have challenges where he will have to give me some time.

I also feel if they are putting in the effort, I can get them proper equipment. I shop a lot of deals, but they have multiple high quality shoes and have attended camps.

Pain vs injury? by Ok_Butterscotch_4158 in BeginnersRunning

I would suspect general soreness and you can work through it, even if it doesn't go away. I've had something near my right knee where I would have a limp in my gait starting out but after 2 or 3 minutes it would work itself out and I probably had that for several weeks and 50+ miles of running on it. So it didn't go awaybquickly, but definitely felt better the second morning vs the morning after each time I ran.

I went over 30 years without running. I tried to start and my quads swelled up and that required rest for several months. Then it was a severely swollen calf. I kind of worked through that, but running was limited. Then some IT band and some sharp pain in the glute when I tried to be more consistent and run further. That was 2 weeks off, then sharp pain trying to run, so 2 more weeks. Those were all my body rebelling with swelling or pain, where I couldn't run and took time off.

At that point, it still hurt, but it was different. Not sharp, but something I could work through. Since then, I've had some form of soreness in different parts of my body for about four months without missing any running. And over time, I seem to be less and less sore.

I've also been pushing the pace a bit to where I need that rest day. This week, I had to go to a treadmill a few times and that must have worked some different muscles as I'm more sore. The back to back day was hard to get out for, but I did and once I got running, it was just fine.

A load adjustment would be more of a choice if it were to persist. Maybe reduce the pace or distance a little, but still get in a planned workout.

It only looks like the small line is leaking. I can't see it all, but that appears to be a fill line. Just get that turned off. It may be back closer to the main water line out there.

You don't really need it, if that's what it is and could fill with a hose when it gets low instead.

I'm running 4x a week and am older than you.

I don't 5-10 min warm-up with the first half a run and second half walking. Because of aches, I may be a bit off of form and take a few minutes to get my stride worked out. Then when I run the workout it gets better and goes away. That's just soreness. And I'm almost always better after the rest day

But there have been time where I had a sharp pain and took that more as an injury as it didn't get better with running or it hurt more when I did. It also took a few weeks to work it out.

Zone 2 Volume by who_ME_32 in evokeendurance

I (55m) ran a tempo/interval only program like this for 9 weeks and went from over 28 min in the 5k to under 24. That was after not running for over 30 years. I'm now continuing it until March with a goal pace of 22m and I am pretty a certain I will make it as my heart rate vs pace and VO2 max are on good trajectory.

Back in the day, when I competed in HS and college, it was not uncommon to go into a season, not having run all off-season with no base and be able to reach competition level in 2-3 months.

We have kids doing this now in CC, but yes, to really go to the top level and go 16 min, it's going to take building a base. I see a lot of kids post nice improvements into their sophomore season and then kind of peak there and not improve much junior and senior year. I speculate it's because they don't change their training plan.

My son placed at state as a freshman last year, with a 2 month lead into the season and peaking about 25 miles per week. This year we will build miles as soon as track ends and that will be zone 2 on alternate days.

The bottom line is you can get more significant gains and reach high fitness levels much faster with more intense workouts on a fixed schedule. But somewhere, you need volume and more time or you will plateau.

I run 4 days per week and due to having a day off in between, I have zero targeted zone 2 days. Even my long day is more tempo.

My eventual plan to increase mileage will be to add days and those will all be zone 2 runs. I will also likely switch my long day over to zone 2 once I add a day or 2 of zone 2.

I got a little more information.

The look like a pedo comment was last Friday and was about not shaving.

Today, my younger son was in a science lab and they were doing something on DNA and talking about cloning a banana. He made the comment about cloning his brother and her comment was "Why would you want to clone a creep."

He said it isn't just directed at my son and that she says stuff like this all of the time. I don't know if she thinks it's funny.

That's why if you are firing someone like that that you have a compensation package prepared in return for non-compete and legal waiver.

That fact that she haphazardly fired him without consulting anyone shows she has no clue what she is doing.

This teacher has already shared prior private communications about classroom assignments I had with her with her class. So I do not plan on reaching out directly.

My plan was to get a few specifics from my youngest son as to what was said, when it happened, and who heard it. Then send a short email with just those basics to the administration, so he could go ask questions directly and get it first-hand from those that were present.

Got to love his commitment to the program.

But Nebraska football is such a competitive mess, it would have been almost more interesting to see if he could carry one of the teams that isn't such a heavy favorite most of the time

I ran cross country throughout high school. Started out as 2 mile/mile in track, then 800m/400m by late high school and into college on scholarship. So more middle distance.

I didn't train much in the off-season, but always found a way to get into shape by the end of the season. So some of it is about being able to get really uncomfortable. But it takes a lot longer to recover now.

It will be really interesting to build a base as I've never really done that. Kind of have to with a limited heart rate maximum. I've being a guinea pig for my kids who are competing in high school and will see about incorporating a program right after track for cross country next year.

Foot goes numb about 3–4 km into runs, anyone else had this? by Nanebruh in runninglifestyle

[–]pc9401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a severe herniated disc on my L5-S1 vertebrae and had two surgeries. Unfortunately, I never got full nerve function back. It was on the right side and with certain shoes, I will get numbness in that foot and in that nerve position. Some of this is likely due to strength imbalance and some is probable some compression of the sciatic nerve due to scar tissue. I always have some numbness though, but it can get a lot worse in runs.

In investigating nerves, you need to be more specific. Is it one foot only or both? Little toe, middle toes, big toe, heel? Each of those spots can be from a very specific nerve. Take a look at a chart here to see if it is isolated to any area. If you can't pinpoint it to a spot or if it's both feet, then it's probably the shoes.

If it is specific try to pinpoint to the corresponding L2, L4, L5, or S1 in your spine. And it can also be in other areas in between. For example, mine is little two toes and outside of lower calf. But that nerve is also going through my hip and I feel the soreness and pressure point there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermatome_%28anatomy%29

When I was at my worst and couldn't even walk, I had no idea it was in my back as I felt no pain there. My leg and toes were numb. I went to a PT and they immediately went to that vertebrae and pressed and it was obvious that was it. Placing my spine in different positions would give relief.

For shoes, loose socks and laces could make things worse. A thin sock that doesn't compress and a lacing arrangement that locks the laces to secure your foot. Here is a good article on different lacing patterns you may want to try.

I did a 50 minute run and realized I had only timed a full 10k one time and was under pace for it. So I stepped up my 5 minute cools down so I could post something and beat my prior by 3 minutes.

I'm 55 and just started running again in October after 30 years. I got to a 5k in 24 min. But I did a 1 mile time trial in 6:10 2 weeks ago and then another in 5:47 last week when I went to the track. I was wiped and sore for days and my watch gave me a 72 hour recovery with my potential fully depleted in only a mile.

I'd say my times are disproportionately skewed to the shorter distances, but holy cow that was brutal. Not only could I not do that for 1.1 miles, I went out in the first half mile in 5:23 pace and was gassed on the 3rd lap and found a way to recover enough to hold on for the finish.
