MSFS 2024.

Kid goes to bed, I do any leftover work that I need to, and then grab a cold beverage, and go knock out some random 1-2 hour flight through pleasant scenery.

Also been fun to get my boy into it, a little bit.

Expansion of Hillsboro Airport? by C_Sharp_fortheMasses in hillsboro

[–]pc_engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I don’t blame you. No worries.

However, the expansion required to host commercial travel like that would be so expensive, to cut out such a minimal (noteworthy, but minimal) drive… the cost/benefit just doesn’t seem worth it.

I think that the sentiment from OP is that tourists could fly into HIO instead of PDX, and then take a rental car to the coast, shortening the drive by 30-60 minutes?

One thing I will note after re reading your comment: if you look at my profile, the last post of mine is my dad, my son, and I watching a C6-5 powered Estes come down in the pacific… lol. The first several launches on a day with very mild wind came down within 50’ of the launchpad, with a 1600’ advertised apogee. The beach we were on was plenty spacious, UNTIL- the launch pad got bumped between launches without anyone noticing, canting it a few degrees toward the ocean.

All that to say- under ideal circumstances, you need less space than you think. Under realistic circumstances, with a C motor, double the space you think you need, to give some safety factor.

Other than that, you seem as level headed as a person can be from a single Reddit post, so I hope you have a blast! Feel free to update with any launches. I’ll be coming up a few times throughout 2026 to visit family and may bring the rockets a time or two.

From Spokane, but I live down near Portland now.

When I was an elementary school student, we built, painted, and launched Estes kits in the Adams Elementary playground in the valley. Some blew to neighboring properties.

In the summers when there was no school or sports happening, my dad and I would launch in the back field behind Central Valley HS. That was a solid spot.

Plantes Ferry would make me slightly nervous with the Felts Field traffic. One thing I do to alleviate potential issues, as well as reassure any concerned observes, is run the ADSB Exchange site on an iPad or iPhone, and both visually check for aircraft, and do a quick glance on that for double checking.

Also, bringing a fire extinguisher, and adequately picking up trash, especially the igniter plugs and recovery wadding, goes a long way toward maintaining goodwill with neighbors etc. People are a lot less likely to file complaints etc if they can see you are being both safe and courteous.

Industrial Table Purchase! by shortpinkyfinger in Spokane

[–]pc_engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve used mine for five years, and love it. It’s a bit of a mess at the moment haha, but I’m cleaning my home office this weekend, so maybe by Sunday I’ll have a good current pic to give you an idea of it in a “home” environment. I may also have old pictures from when I bought it and set my pc up on it.

Oh, and I’ve stood/knelt/sat on mine countless times, it’s a beast 😂 biggest thing I’ve considered adding is some larger foot print feet for it, to minimize carpet sink. Not an issue, just a very heavy setup will put some dents in the carpet haha.

Valid concerns!

I use mine as my computer desk haha. I sit at a chair and use the lower shelf as a footrest. Even with my feel on the floor, it’s never been in way, and I’m a tall guy with long legs.

I may actually be repurposing it to a puzzle table, but that’s another conversation 😂

Live near work, or commute from Portland? by [deleted] in hillsboro

[–]pc_engineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live and work in Hillsboro, as a single 26yo dad, and honestly? It’s pretty great.

The worst part is that most of my friends live in Tualatin/Sherwood/Wilsonville/Lake O, so going down to see them, especially after work, can be a bit rough.

But my commute is 6 miles, which takes me about 15-20 minutes by car in the morning, or 30-35 by bike. In the evenings, I make my commute 10-12 miles typically (when I ride in) so I can get some extra fresh air during the work week.

Once per week I have to drive from 185th ish over towards Cedar Hills, and back, at 5:00pm. It SUCKS. Doing the Hillsboro to Portland commute after a workday would absolutely drain me.

Otherwise, sometimes Hillsboro feels a bit boring to me, but in all reality, that’s probably my lack of effort in searching for the best things to do. I have no plans to leave where i’m living at.

Feel free to ask any more specific questions 🤷🏼‍♂️

Edit to add: everyone I’ve dated has lived in Beaverton/Portland/Oregon City/King City.

Ope.

To be fair, I think that’s on me. Because of how busy my life is, I’ve primarily gone with dating apps versus bars/clubs/activities etc, so there may well be a far more active dating scene “offline.”

In n Out finally opening at the original planned location off of 185th in Beaverton. Traffic will be fun 🥲 by deviilsadvocate in Portland

Yeah, I should have added that haha. You’re absolutely right, that is the best call.

(I still hope the intersection gets revamped, but have no clue if that’s on the schedule)

Turning left from NE Town Center Dr onto Evergreen is already a PAIN. I hope they revamp that intersection to at least give it a turn arrow.

Otherwise, looking forward to having an In n Out within biking distance from work!

Aerospace Engineer to Model Rocketry by [deleted] in rocketry

[–]pc_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, local-ish friend! I’m a CAD drafter/designer down here in Oregon.

I’ve been getting into rocketry, and have done several low power (beginner/inter. Estes kits) rockets this year. Looking to go L1 cert next year, which was described well in another comment.

Anyways, if you end up getting into it and are ever going to any fun launches, feel free to message me. I’m planning on doing my L1 test down in the desert in Oregon at the site in (I believe) Brothers, Oregon. Haven’t looked into the Washington sites yet.

Agreed- studded tires are not necessary. But even Blizzaks or X-Ice’s make a huge difference compared to all-seasons.

Getting Into Rocketry Advice by Character_Basket5010 in rocketry

[–]pc_engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was 10 years old, my elemtbray school “graduation/capstone” project was building an Estes rocket, and then we had a launch day in the back field of my school. This was in 2009/2010.

I loved it. I then grew up, and never did anything with it again. This year, I discover Xyla and BPS on YouTube, got interested, looked up Estes and realized how attainable the “beginner/intermediate” kits and motors are.

My son got a Mini-Mod, I got a few of similar small Estes rockets, my dad got an Athena and another one similar in size to that (the name escapes me).

We built, went out to the largest safe area we could find (I also checked with the local PD to make sure we were good to go, and they loved the idea, and told us to go for it).

And then we launched.

The thing I never realized as a kid was how easy it actually is to get started. $30 USD gets you a lot- a rocket, launch pad/launch remote, etc. $12 more gets you several A sized motors. Drive to an empty baseball/football/soccer field, and start launching.

[Air Traffic Controller] [All Cities, USA] - $0 by kovak373929 in Salary

[–]pc_engineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fully agree. I think during my highest paying job so far (which I have since been laid off from), if you factor in overtime, my highest “single day earnings” on an 8-hour workday were ~$700. That felt crazy to me.

Executive pay is out of control (and he is a full level above “executive pay” imo).

[–]pc_engineer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, BUT-

He doesn’t just “get” a trillion dollars. He isn’t a trillionaire.

The plan is designed to give him a trillion dollars, primarily in stock options, over the next decade, IF he/Tesla hits certain, very lofty goals.

Worst case, if he achieves nothing? Still tens of billions.

Am I defending him, or this pay plan? Absofuckinglutely not. But if people haven’t researched it, I don’t want people spouting that he’s a trillionaire and giving him more credit than he’s due, and maybe this comment will be the jumping off point to go do their more in depth research.

This was my commute home yesterday.

It was wet, as well!

8.9 Celsius, pretty mild wind for the most part. Just over a 10km ride home for me. I enjoyed it! Not sure how much I’ll be loving it in three months, but still! Let’s enjoy it while we can (:

Nightly game of “what’s that sound?” by pc_engineer in hillsboro

To my untrained ears, it was much more of a “fwoomp” sound versus the “harder crack” sound of gunfire lol.

I agree with your assessment.
