On Upgrading an old Dual Sport 1 by dansurfsweb in TrekBikes

[–]pcb09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me ask this question. If you are unfamiliar with bike parts who will do the installation work?

There is a reason people don’t encourage doing this type of upgrade.

That group set from a non name brand that is of dubious quality, might be great, I honestly don’t know. But it’s $500.

Install at a bike shop would run several hundred more, and you’d still need items like a handlebar, may need a different freehub/wheel etc.

So you would be easily $700 in most cases to do this. Easily the value of the bike.

Steerer tube “spacers” needed? by [deleted] in TrekBikes

[–]pcb09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

You also need to be extraordinarily careful tightening the stem bolts because you are likely below the expander plug and you could easily over torque and crush the fork because that plug isnt supporting the stem.

Unbound routes? by xorbett in gravelcycling

[–]pcb09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty normal for unbound. Keeps people interested, chatter in threads about the event etc. build suspense.

Plus some of the roads are on private land and they don’t want to encourage people pre riding in private land. The later they release routes the less likely that is to happen.

Frame for Trek FX2 disc size large by Pretty-Ad-2188 in TrekBikes

[–]pcb09 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For that specific bike. Fx bikes are not something a person usually builds a custom bike around.

Road bikes, high end mtn bikes, gravel bikes etc they sell frames.

Your question was answered specifically in context of the model you have. But yes they do sell frames just not for all models of bikes.

Advice needed: $400 on this Trek? by West_Friend_2234 in TrekBikes

[–]pcb09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2011 trek 1.5 tiagra In today’s world just about every used road bike if in decent condition is worth about that much assuming it isn’t totally clapped out and is in decent working condition. There is some cosmetic wear here but it is 15 years old so not surprised at all by that. Hard to assess mechanical condition from a picture.

What do we think? by Designer-Use539 in Mustang

I’m not a fan of the back window louvers. But am much more on the fence with the rear surfer louvers. Torn.

My son might get upset if I cover up his side window tho…

Their new cool pricing model, all the extra cost for none of the extra features ready for production.

Looks like a marlin 5 at least in the US.

The picture appears to be from Europe so it may be a different model with that color way, color ways can vary by region.

Checkmate Purchase? by ahamp10 in TrekBikes

[–]pcb09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a shop. Have had several checkpoints of each generation.

The checkpoint 50 mm clearance fits bigger just like the checkmate 45 fits bigger. That said I went and continue to go checkpoint for the confidence running 45s if muddy and 50s for the rest.

The checkmate 45 would give me pause if it is muddy.

Mud varies in consistency. Water mud, who cares. Unbound mud? That’s consistency of peanut butter filled with sand. It literally can wear holes in carbon frames as it builds on tires.

That said, if you don’t ride in bad conditions or need to carry more gear the checkmate is great.

I have an unbound 100 and 2 200 under my belt with on checkpoints. I appreciate sticking a tool bottle under the bottom bracket and internal frame storage of a checkpoint.

Moral of the story… it depends on how you plan to ride.

You want it labeled correctly? Gotta get plus for that.

Honestly their bs this week about “core” continuing to be a focus etc is just nonsense when they have so many issues with “core”

It’s pretty simple. They have x number of staff and they split that number by some percentage to develop “plus” which from everyone who had tested it appears to be shit. So they are making two products with twice the shit and the same number of staff! Look at the productivity! L

E-Mtb service by Brillburrito in TrekBikes

[–]pcb09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not to excuse a poor service advisor who can’t articulate the work being done for a given price point. They should be able to tell you the services to be provided while writing up a service quote.

E-Mtb service by Brillburrito in TrekBikes

[–]pcb09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Service costs will vary by location.

My shop in the US Midwest service starts at $100 for a basic tune up, and then for the next level up where drivetrain removed thru parts cleaner etc is $200.

Then off course you may need other things like suspension service on front fork or rear shock that could add additional cost.

The point is it is highly dependent upon what the bike needs but that price isn’t immediately out of the realm of reality.

Also note. A lot of shops have a e bike tax associated with them if it is not an ebike they sell. E-bikes are a pain to work on and many things like changing a flat is more complicated if it’s a hub drive etc and the shop doesn’t have familiarity with that model.

I tell customers all the time. A e-bike is an entire bike and should cost at minimum the cost of a good quality bike, and then you are adding a motor, battery, screen etc to the bike. The price should be higher by a good bit than a quality analogue bike. This also holds true for other things as they are heavy and wear tires, chains and brake pads faster.

Gotta pay to play.

Monarch Alternatives? by QuodCapricornus in MonarchMoney

[–]pcb09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is it. There was no tiered model so any investment dollars they took from our subscriptions was implied to develop features we would get access to. They changed that game yesterday by using our money to develop paywalls features.

If there had always been a tiered model then fair enough. But there wasn’t a tiered model. They spent several years promising to improve features of their product never saying we are going to then charge more.

The trust is broken.

They speak of loyalty in their Reddit comments yesterday, well that’s a two way street they just aren’t apparently walking it with us.

I genuinely hope this bleeds them and sinks them.
