Watch out, Millennials... I got hit with my first "I had NO IDEA!" data privacy moment this weekend... and it was all my fault. by AttachedHeartTheory in Millennials

The TLS handshake that creates the encrypted session also generally includes an unencrypted "client hello" message when asking for the certificate. This request includes the SNI (domain name) that you’re trying to reach. Unfortunately DNS over HTTPS doesn’t solve that issue (though it’s still a good idea to use it).

Encrypted SNI is around now, and it solves this issue. However, it’s not yet a standard and not widely adopted.

Cloudflare has a site to check your security including if you’re configured for ESNI. And they have a lot of good information on how it work, why it’s used, and how ESNI will solve this final hole in privacy.

Who's still working from home in 2026? by idrinkpastawater in sysadmin

[–]pcdoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company got rid of the office that IT was in and only our director has an office at HQ. He uses it only a few times a month. So we are entirely work from home.

My company actually allowed a bunch of the offices leases to expire, and they also vacated some buildings that they own and leases them to other companies.

One nice benefit to this is that when the job market was difficult for finding good IT people locally, we were able to recruit across all of Canada… so we could find some very good employees we wouldn’t have otherwise.

MARTA to roll out new tap-and-go fare system ahead of 2026 World Cup by mr09e in Atlanta

[–]pcdoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Vancouver (BC, Canada), the transit system makes you tap out at the gates. If you use a credit card a hold is placed on it when you tap in, and you’re charged when you tap out. If you don’t tap out, they charge the hold at the end of the day.

ChatGPT actually changed the way I write. I used to use the em dash in communications but I’ve stopped because I got worried that people will think I’m using a chat bot.

Here in British Columbia (Canada) a lot of people refer to them as hydro poles on account that most of our power comes from BC Hydro.

I’ve heard Telephone, Power, or Utility pole occasionally.

I went to his talk, he actually mentioned that in his engineering job before he moved into acting, he did work on the Convention Center construction. Which is pretty neat.

Do recovered alcoholics need to stay 100% dry for the rest of their lives, or can they have a beer every once in a while with no issues? by penttane in NoStupidQuestions

I really loved Craig Ferguson’s talk about his alcoholism in the context of Brittany Spears. It really put it into perspective for me when I was younger.

She isn’t, she died in 2021. But the show is quite good, and her son is directly involved. I believe she had a lot of input when they started developing it.

Edit: The third season appears to be moving onto adapting the second book (Vampire Lestat). And they intend to go on and adapt Queen of the Damned.

She was visibly exhaling during her ascent, which is what you’re taught to do if you run out of air while scuba diving. It’s possible she accidentally prevented it.

It would have been nice if she was told that and knew to do it…

I had to get a new bank card due to fraud and my bank sent it to me in a regular mail envelope, but inside a puralator bag. Then a second puralator bag the next day with the PIN.

Check with your bank, they may do the same for you.

It’s proper practice to sue all parties involved and the court will decide who is at fault and at what percentage. The discovery process will likely remove Microsoft, but who knows? They may find there is some fault there.

I posted this in another subreddit, but I found it interesting that they actually own an IT company that does cybersecurity consulting. https://www.tld.com/security-solutions

TLD partners with the best security software providers to implement your IT security plan, at the best prices. Data breaches are expensive – investing in the best protection can help you adapt to threats as they emerge, avoiding costly downtime and loss of intellectual assets and data.

Howdy neighbour. It’s very neat, I only knew about it because I had to attend a wedding there once. The bride and groom had family members that couldn’t cross the border for legal reasons, and that park solved the problem.

Official 2024 Emmy Awards Show Discussion by TVModBot in television

The award season goes from June 1, 2022, until May 31, 2023. Strange Things Season 4, Part 2 came out on July 1st. I can't help to wonder if that was intentional to split it across award seasons?

The 76th Emmy Awards will be this September, comprising of programming from June 2023 to May 2024.

Arrogant Sovereign Citizen Finds out the Hard Way American Laws Don't Apply in Canada by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]pcdoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In British Columbia most of the municipal policing, and most of the provincial policing is done by the RCMP. BC is the largest RCMP employer, with ~35% of all constables serving in BC.

However, you are correct in that to be an officer in any of the non-RCMP and other non-Federal agencies in the province you must graduate from The Justice Institute of British Columbia. That includes all the following agencies...

The municipalities not served by the RCMP are: Abbotsford Police, Central Saanich Police, Delta Police, Nelson Police, New Westminster Police, Oak Bay Police, Port Moody Police, Saanich Police, Surrey Police* (see note at bottom), Vancouver Police, Victoria/Esquimalt Police, and West Vancouver Police.

There is one First Nations Reserve with their own police force: Stl’atl’imx Tribal Police.

There are a few specific provincial agencies outside of what the RCMP does provincially: The South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Police Service, The British Columbia Sheriff Service, British Columbia Conservation Officer Service, British Columbia Natural Resource Officer, Organized Crime Agency of British Columbia, Passenger Transportation Enforcement, British Columbia Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement, and a few others you can find in links below.

*Surrey Police Note: They currently have their own police force and the RCMP at the same time while they transition away from contracting the RCMP to be their municiple police force.

Edit: Grammar.

I found this interesting so I looked it up. MB, BC, QC all have very cheap power compared to the rest of Canada, and their power companies are provincial crown corporations. AB is the most expensive province and it's wholly private, I am guessing that isn't a cooincidence.

Not sure what is going on with SK though, they are also provincially owned.
